He was born in El Paso on Feb. 17, 1936, to James and Grace McDonald. He graduated from Alpine High School in 1953 and graduated with honors from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1958 with a degree in economics. He served in the U.S. Army as a captain in the airborne infantry and moved to San Angelo in 1962. Jim was very active in the community serving as president of the Optimist Club from 1963-64 and was named Optimist of the Year from 1965-66. He became president of the Lighthouse for the Blind in 1968 and was on the board of directors for 17 years. Among his many other activities, he was a member of the original committee for establishing a Boys Club in San Angelo and had served as a director for 20 years since its inception. He served as chairman of the membership and fund drive of the Boy Scouts in 1968, past secretary and director of the YMCA, past member of the San Angelo Ramrods and past deacon of the First Presbyterian Church. He was named Outstanding Young Man of San Angelo in 1969 and named one of the Outstanding Young Men of America in 1970. Jim also was past president of the Ram Booster Club at Angelo State University, past director of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce, past director of Texas Good Air Service and was a member of BPOE Lodge 1880. He was past owner of The McDonald Agency of Insurance in San Angelo, a commercial fire and casualty agency and owner of McDonald Investments. He was past president of the San Angelo Association of Independent Insurance Agents and was a member of the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors and was a licensed risk manager. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy McDonald of San Angelo; a son, Shel McDonald and wife, Diane, of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Elizabeth Collie Demont and husband, Mike, of Jacksonville; his father and stepmother, James C. McDonald Jr. and his wife, Peg, of Columbus, Ga.; three brothers, Jerry McDonald and wife, Jane, of Reno, Nev., John McDonald and wife, Cathy of Derby, Kan., and Brad McDonald and wife, Merrimore, of Chesterfield, Mich.; two sisters, Judy Lange and husband, Tim, of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Mary Ann Burk and husband, Wayne, of Tampa, Fla.; stepdaughters, Julia Kacergis and husband, John, of Plano and Diana Atwell and husband, Richard, of Altus, Okla.; a stepson, James Wilcox of Dallas; four grandchildren, Austin and Abigail McDonald, and Alexandra and Ted Demont, all of Jacksonville; an uncle, Gayle McDonald of Snyder; two aunts, Jo Alice Cranford and husband, Charles, of Harker Heights and Billie McDonald of Dallas; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. He was a stock farmer and a Baptist. He served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His first wife, Margaret Hunt Nixon, preceded him in death in June of 1987. He married Ruth Clark in Menard on Oct. 23, 1989, and they moved to San Angelo in 1991. George Lee Taylor Jr., 53, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 1997, in Houston of cancer. George was the son of former San Angelo residents George L. and Mozelle Taylor and graduated from San Angelo Central High School in 1962. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. George was awarded a regular Army commission upon graduation from Texas A&M University in 1966. At A&M, he was a battalion staff officer, president of the West Texas Hometown Club and a member of the honor company, Ross Volunteers. George served in Vietnam and Korea and during 10 years with the Army he received his master's degree in economics from St. Mary's University in San Antonio. While on active duty, he was awarded three commendation medals, a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. After resigning his commission, George joined Management 2000, a Houston consulting firm, where he was a senior adviser, writer and manager of information systems. His academic background in economics and professional background in human resources management as a member of the American Society of Training and Development, contributed significantly to the structure and growth of newly emerging franchising companies, which formed the core clientele of Management 2000. George was loved very much and his memory is cherished by his family. He is survived by his sister and her husband, Judith and Bo Bond of San Angelo and Golden, Colo.; his nieces and nephew, Stacey, Brooke and Benton of Texas; and his uncle and aunt, Collins and Maggie Sayner of Tennyson. Robert married Magdalene Fischer on Aug. 3, 1946, in Ballinger. He was retired from the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation. Mr. Harris served many years as a cook for the OS Ranch Steer Roping to benefit the boys at West Texas Boys Ranch. He had been a resident of San Angelo for 47 years. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie Sellars; brothers, Howard, Homer, Archie and George; a sister, Inez Clay; and his parents, George and Josie Harris.
