He died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, in Crockett County Care Center at the age of 93. Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, at the First Baptist Church with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are by Preddy Funeral Home. Carl was a member of the Pumpville Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for many years at the Pandale Community Church. He was ordained as a deacon by the First Baptist Church of Del Rio and also served as a deacon in the First Baptist Church in Ozona for many years. Carl is survived by his wife, Myrtle; one son and daughter-in-law, Sonny and Barbara Malone of Ozona; one daughter and son-in-law, Zelma and Bill Braselton of Corpus Christi; a daughter-in-law, Billie Malone of Sheffield; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. MARGARET BUCK Margaret Buck of San Angelo joined our Lord at the age of 70 on Nov. 15, 1997, at 9:15 p.m. after a courageous battle with multiple sclerosis. Service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Sierra Vista United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Jason Fry, pastor. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery, directed by Johnson's Funeral Home. Margaret was born on March 6, 1927, in Collinsville to Ernest and Fredericka Farr. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Texas Tech University on June 7, 1948. She was married to Hugh L. Buck on July 25, 1948, in Electra, Texas. During her marriage, Margaret was a homemaker and worked with Hugh in the insurance business. Following Hugh's death on July 3, 1970, Margaret was church secretary for Angelo Heights United Methodist Church for several years. She then worked as secretary for the athletic department at Angelo State University for 15 years until her retirement in 1989. Margaret was a charter member of Sierra Vista United Methodist Church and an associate member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Her faith and her friends at church were a very important part of her life. She was an active member of the San Angelo Saddle Club and several bridge groups. Margaret loved doing needlework. She enjoyed most of all preparing and sharing meals with her family and friends. She is survived by three sons, Don Buck and wife, Patti, of Spokane, Wash., Perry Buck and wife, Liz, of O'Fallon, Ill., and Fred Buck and wife, Becky, of San Angelo; one daughter, Brenda Wyatt and husband, Charles, of San Angelo; eight grandchildren, Layne Buck of O'Fallon, Brandon Buck of Fort Worth, Jenny Wyatt of Midland, Shannon Buck of Spokane and Teri Wyatt, Michael Buck, Ryan Buck and Larry Buck, all of San Angelo; two brothers, Alton Farr of Hereford and Joe Farr of Collinsville; two sisters-in-law, Irene Farr of Wichita Falls and Aline Farr of Collinsville; and many nieces and nephews. Services are pending at Heritage Funeral Home. ______________________________________________________________ CLARENCE RUEBEN PHILLIPS MONAHANS - Clarence Rueben Phillips, devoted husband and father, passed into eternal glory at 12:40 a.m. Nov. 13, 1997, after a four-month battle with lymphatic cancer. Clarence was born April 11, 1927, in Mathis, Texas, to Norman Franklin Phillips and his wife, Bertha Ashcraft Phillips. He was one of seven children born into the Phillips family. Clarence resided in Mathis until age 8, when his family moved to Sinton, Texas. After completing high school in Sinton, Clarence joined the U.S. Army in June 1945 and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant in February 1947. In 1952, Clarence graduated from Texas A&I in Kingsville with a bachelor of science degree in physics and went to work for Dowell. While working in Sinton, Clarence met Joyce Kendall and was married on May 30, 1954. The couple resided in Victoria, Texas, between 1954 and 1964, and had their daughter, Kelly Mardell Phillips in 1962 while in Victoria. In 1964, Clarence accepted a job transfer with Dowell and moved his family to Monahans. Clarence worked full time for Dowell until his retirement in 1977. For the next 19 years, he worked part time in the Permian Basin oil business. When not working in the oil business, Clarence enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, being a handyman at home and tending the yard. Clarence is survived by his wife of 43 years, Joyce Mardell Phillips, a current resident of Monahans; one daughter, Kelly Phillips Park, who graduated from MHS in 1980 and currently lives in San Diego, Calif.; one brother, Lloyd H. Phillips of Duncan, Okla.; and two sisters, Lois White of Sinton and Ann Kirkland of Houston. Clarence also is survived by two young grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Park, age 15 months and Seth Elisha Park, age 3 months. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Nov. 22, at 10 a.m. in the First Baptist Church sanctuary in Monahans. A reception will be held at the church immediately following the service. Her activities within the church included being a member of First United Methodist Women, chairman of the church society, evangelism co-chair, transportation coordinator, youth caring coordinator, co-founder of Friends and Faith Sunday school, Christmas basket coordinator, adult coordination and co-founder for the Rainbow Ministry of Southgate Apartments and administrator for Visiting Angels. She loved her church and working with the youth. She also was past chairman of Meals on Wheels, worked with the adult literacy program in Pearland and helped with the St. Jude's Hospital Bike-A-Thon and served on the Carlston PTA Board.She lived in Pearland the past 25 years. Mrs. Bankston was an avid camper and loved bicycling in the woods.She was a wonderful mother to her boys, a loving wife, sister and daughter. We all love you dearly. WILMA OLA MILLIGAN TOPLIFFE ELDORADO - Wilma Topliffe, 86, passed away Thursday, Nov. 20, 1997, in Eldorado. Burial will follow in Eldorado Cemetery directed by Kerbow Funeral Home. Wilma Milligan was born to Robert and Myrta Milligan on Dec. 1, 1910, in Coleman County near Rockwood. Her father farmed and ranched in that area and at an early age Wilma learned the ranching business. At the age of 7 Wilma drove 30 head of cows to water every day. In 1923 her family moved to Schleicher County where her father had bought a ranch north of Eldorado. While attending school in Eldorado, Wilma lived in town with Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Doty during the week and helped Mr. Doty in his store. On the weekends she helped her father with the ranch work. She graduated from Eldorado High School and then attended the University of Texas and graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor of journalism degree. She was a member of Theta Sigma Phi and Kappa Tau Alpha. Wilma taught school at Rudd and Bailey Ranch Schools in Schleicher County and at John H. Reagan in San Angelo. She married E.H. ``Top'' Topliffe in 1938 at the Milligan Ranch and they moved to Baytown where both of their daughters were born. In 1944 Top and Wilma moved to Eldorado and purchased the butane gas business. Through the years, Wilma was active in the Methodist Church, the Women's Club and the Schleicher County Public Library. The three most important things in her life were God, family and friends. She exemplified these in her life every day. Wilma is survived by her husband, E.H. Topliffe; two daughters, Martha Ellen Tucker and her husband, Roger, of Big Spring and Myrta Ann Overby and her husband, Curt, of Plentywood, Mont.; two grandsons, Rex Tucker and his wife, Amy, of Midland and Keith Tucker of Odessa; and one sister, Robert Ratliff of Roswell, N.M. She was blessed with care and love from many devoted friends. The family requests memorials be sent to the First United Methodist Church of Eldorado or the Eldorado Public Library. THOMAS C. `CARL' ATCHISON Thomas C. ``Carl'' Atchison, 71, of San Angelo passed away at 6:21 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, 1997, in Columbia Medical Center. Carl was born Dec. 18, 1925, in Stanton, Texas, to John Thomas and Mabel S. Atchison. He was a resident of San Angelo since 1966 and was a member of Northside Church of Christ. In 1931, his family moved to Pecos, Texas. Carl graduated from Pecos High School in 1943. Following this, he attended the University of Texas at Austin for eight months prior to volunteering for the draft into the U.S. Army Air Force on March 14, 1944. Carl received his basic training at Sheppard Field at Wichita Falls. Following this, he was stationed at Lowry Field in Denver, Colo., where he graduated from the Central Fire Control School. Carl joined the flight crew for training on B-29 ``Superforts'' at Great Bend, Kan. In March, the crew picked up new B-29s and flew by way of Kearney, Neb, Sacramento, Calif., and Hawaii to Guam where they formed the new 19th Bomb Group with the 20th Air Force and began flying bomb raids on Japan. After completing 35 missions, they were shipped home in August. While on the high seas two days west of San Francisco, they received word that the war was over. Carl was awarded the Air Medal with six Oak Leaf clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After being discharged from the Air Force in October 1945, Carl returned to the University of Texas and completed his B.S. degree in civil engineering in May 1949. Following graduation, Carl was employed by the Texas Highway Department in Odessa. Carl worked as a civil engineer for 42 years and retired from the Texas Highway Department in 1991 after 37 years of service. At the time of his retirement, he was the managing resident engineer in charge of construction and maintenance in five counties in District 7, including Glasscock and Sterling counties. Carl was married to Kathleen Harrington on July 16, 1950, in Crane, Texas. Carl was preceded in death by his father and one son, Thomas Eugene Atchison. Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Atchison of San Angelo; four sons, James Atchison and wife, Mary Ann, of San Angelo, John Atchison of San Angelo, Timothy Atchison and wife, Iris, of Pearland and Matthew Scott Atchison of San Angelo; a daughter-in-law, Peggy Marie Atchison of San Angelo; his mother, Mabel Sunshine Atchison of San Angelo; one sister, Alawayne King of Levelland; and 11 grandchildren. Carter of Mertzon, Texas, and three adopted daughters in her heart: Neta Wescott of Mertzon, Kay Emery of Del Rio and Virginia Epps of Sonora. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1968 and her parents in 1972. Mrs. Carter was a graduate of Mertzon High School and attended Angelo Junior College and afterwards Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Mertzon, Texas. She was active in community affairs and very much enjoyed giving of her time and effort to any one in need with whom she came in contact, as her great joy in life was seeing to others. For this gift, she will be greatly missed by family and friends. Mrs. Carter actively continued ranching with her son until death and will besorely missed as the senior advising partner of her ranching operation. Mrs. Carter's survivors include her son, Thomas S. HENDERSON J.T. Henderson, born Jan. 8, 1915, in Sierra Blanca, Texas, to Jewel Thelma (Mace) Henderson and Thomas Oliver Henderson passed from this life Thursday, Nov. 20, 1997, at 5:43 p.m. at his home. J.T. was in Boy Scouts for the majority of his life. He was assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, scribe, song leader and assistant senior patrol leader. He was awarded the Eagle Scout Badge in 1928, awarded the Silver Beaver in 1952, awarded the Silver Award in Explorer Scouting and earned Eagle Palms. He served as scoutmaster for 39 years at Troop 1 and in 1988 J.T. had spent 54 years in Scouting. He was chosen Outstanding Scoutmaster for the South Central Region in 1974. He was nominated for the Jefferson Award. J.T. attended four national jamborees and attended 21 summer camps. He went on the 50-mile backpacking trip to Philmont, Canadian canoe trip and four Rio Grande raft trips covering a total of 465 miles. J.T. was chosen Outstanding Citizen for San Angelo in 1965. J.T. Henderson Day was proclaimed by the city of San Angelo in 1977. J.T. served as troop leader for Girl Scout Troop 81 for five years. He wrote and had published two books. One was about the Boy Scouts and one was about the Girl Scouts. J.T. was a Sunday school teacher for 31 years at the First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the board of stewards. J.T. and his wife, Vivian, sponsored the MYF for five years. Survivors include his wife, Vivian of 59 years; two daughters, Jan Johnston of Midland and Judy Butts and husband, Ted, of Garland; three grandsons, Dan Butts, Clay Johnston and Blake Johnston; one granddaughter, Marcy Tull of Midland; and six great-granddaughters; one brother, Tommy Henderson; and one sister, Marjorie Gustavson; and five half-brothers and half-sisters. Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church with the Rev. John Loving officiating, assisted by the Rev. Robert B. Hedges and the Rev. Michael A. Smith. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Mr. Ellington was born Oct. 1, 1907, in Hillsboro, Texas, to Ida Violet and Luther William Ellington. He attended schools in Hillsboro before going to Southern Methodist University on a football and track scholarship. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity at SMU. Sam, as he was know to his many friends, moved to Amarillo in the early 1930s, where he worked for a high-school classmate, Joe Herring. He became branch manager for Badger Herring, a distributor for Schenley Distillers. He ran branch operations in Big Spring, San Angelo and Odessa with his territory covering virtually all of West Texas. Sam began his lifelong career in the alcoholic-beverage industry prior to the repeal of Prohibition. At that time, liquor could only be dispensed by prescription from a drugstore. He returned to San Angelo in 1945, establishing Pinkie's Liquor Stores in partnership with Tom ``Pinkie'' Roden of Odessa. In 1952, he founded Samco Inc., which purchased Mr. Roden's interest in the two San Angelo Pinkie's liquor stores. Subsequently, Samco Inc. owned a combination of 10 Pinkie's and Doc's liquor stores throughout West Texas and the Panhandle. He was active in the Texas Package Stores Association from its very beginning in the 1940s. Sam served on the board of directors many years and as vice president of the organization. Mr. Ellington was an avid outdoorsman who loved both hunting and fishing. He was a longtime member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry. He belonged to the Downtown Lions Club, which honored him as Outstanding Lion of the Year in 1964-65. He received the title of ``Old Monarch'' from Lions International for 20 years of service to his community. He was a staunch supporter of SMU and the Mustang Club. He was also a supporter of ASU athletics and a member of the Ram Booster Club. Survivors include his wife, Lois; two sons and daughters-in-law, A.W. ``Al'' Ellington Jr. and wife, Julieta, of San Antonio and Mike Ellington and wife, Mary, of San Angelo; two daughters, Sandra Williams of Houston and Janet Comer of Minneapolis; 10 grandchildren, Cally, Michael, Lee, Megan, Sean and Sasha Ellington, and Elyce Gavitt, Michele Vertuca, Kristin Luse and Eric Comer; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister-in-law, Martha Ellington of Fort Worth; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Landrum Ellington; his second wife, Estelle Ward Ellington; two brothers, Harland and Jack Ellington; and one sister, Evelyn Ellington Denman. Arrangements are by Rains-Seale Funeral Home. Mrs. Simpson was born July 27, 1908, to Alvie and Emma Newsom in the Mann community. She married Alton Bryan in 1926 in Norton. He preceded her in death in 1935. She married Downey Simpson of Ballinger in 1957, and he died in 1978. One stepson, Dwain Simpson, and one stepdaughter, Louise Simpson, also preceded her in death. Mrs. Simpson is survived by her sister, Bertha Hambright of Ballinger; one son, Alton Bryan and his wife, Iris, and one daughter, Neita Forgey and her husband, M.L., all of Ballinger; also, one stepson, Weldon Simpson of Weatherford; three stepdaughters, Nettie Jean Williams and Betty Jo Ohlen, both of Crowley, and Doris Minshew of Perrin; one beloved stepdaughter, Jean Simpson, of Houston; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and 10 stepgrandchildren. Mrs. Simpson, a widow for many years, was employed by early businessmen Claude Stone, Cal Adair and W.O. Irby. She was the first secretary of the Namikango Mission Work, begun by the Ninth Street Church of Christ and continuing to this day. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. SAN ANTONIO - Ernest Clifton Mahon Jr., born July 16, 1923, passed away Nov. 22, 1997, at the age of 74 years. Mr. Mahon was born in Wrightsboro, Texas, to Ernest Clifton Mahon Sr. and Alice Pouncey Mahon, and lived most of his younger years in Dilley, Texas. He graduated from high school in Dilley in 1941 and graduated from Texas A&I College in Kingsville with a bachelor's degree and master's degree in agriculture education in 1949. Ernest served in World War II as a platoon sergeant in the 16th Armored Tank Division of General Patton's Third Army. Upon his return from serving in World War II, he married Dorothy Jane Shaw. Throughout his career as a vocational agriculture teacher, Ernest not only enriched many young people's lives, but they enriched his as well. His life also was truly enriched by his many friends who shared his love of hunting. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dorothy; his son, Ernest Clifton Mahon III and wife, Shirley, and their children, Blake and Brooke of Bellville; his daughter, Sarah Jane Wade and husband, John, and their child, Johnna, of Sonora; and his daughter, Nina Margaret Koenig and husband, Charles, and their children, Jenna and Jarred of Calallen. He also is survived by his sister, Doris Mahon Vanham of Uvalde, and brother, Willis Mahon and his wife, Mary, of Dallas; and two nephews and one niece. Henderson, born Jan. 8, 1915, in Sierra Blanca, Texas, to Jewel Thelma (Mace) Henderson and Thomas Oliver Henderson, passed from this life Thursday, Nov. 20, 1997, at 5:43 p.m. at his home. J.T. was in Boy Scouts for the majority of his life. He was assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, scribe, song leader and assistant senior patrol leader. He was awarded the Eagle Scout Badge in 1928, awarded the Silver Beaver in 1952, awarded the Silver Award in Explorer Scouting and earned Eagle Palms. He served as Scoutmaster for 39 years at Troop 1, and in 1988 J.T. had spent 54 years in Scouting. He was chosen Outstanding Scoutmaster for the South Central Region in 1974. He was nominated for the Jefferson Award. J.T. attended four national jamborees and attended 21 summer camps. He went on the 50-mile backpacking trip to Philmont, Canadian canoe trip and four Rio Grande raft trips covering a total of 465 miles. J.T. was chosen Outstanding Citizen for San Angelo in 1965. J.T. Henderson Day was proclaimed by the city of San Angelo in 1977. J.T. served as troop leader for Girl Scout Troop 81 for five years. He wrote and had published two books. One was about the Boy Scouts, and one was about the Girl Scouts. J.T. was a Sunday school teacher for 31 years at the First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Board of Stewards. J.T. and his wife, Vivian, sponsored the MYF for five years. Survivors include his wife, Vivian of 59 years; two daughters, Jan Johnston of Midland and Judy Butts and husband, Ted, of Garland; three grandsons, Dan Butts, Clay Johnston and Blake Johnston; one granddaughter, Marcy Tull of Midland; six great-granddaughters; one brother, Tommy Henderson; one sister, Marjorie Gustavson; and five half brothers and half sisters. Other survivors include Nelson and Saundra Smith, Genera and Dauphin Whitehead, Jerryand Thurman Smith and Hycinth and Mel Faulk. Pallbearers will be Jim Grissen, Paul Paschal, Beaver McManus, Randy Rountree, Barry Rountree, Bob Chandler, Lee Horton and Lee Atkins.
