Services are pending at Howell-Doran Funeral Home. ______________________________________________________________ ALICE MAE WELCH Alice Mae Welch, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997, in Park Plaza Nursing Center after a long illness. Service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lynn Young, pastor of St. Luke United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Alice was born Oct. 18, 1912, on the ranch of her grandfather, Warren Davis, near Ozona. Her parents, W.E. Womble and Ida Davis Womble, moved to San Angelo when Alice was 6 months old and made this their home. Her grandparents continued to ranch near Eldorado for many years. Alice and her former husband, Raymond Welch Sr., and her in-laws, Newt and Lizzie Welch, were the founders of Welch Transfer and Storage Co. Alice and her husband started the company as a delivery business operating from their home on East 6th Street. They expanded and bought one small moving van and began to haul larger items. In a few years, they bought other vehicles and continued to grow. Although no longer in the family, Welch Transfer and Storage has been in business for more than 65 years. Mrs. Welch was the sole owner and operator of the business from 1960 to the late 1970s. In 1964, she was honored as being the only woman in the United States to own and operate a business of this type on a full-time basis. At one time, Alice inventoried all incoming and outgoing shipments regardless of whether they had Texas, out-of-state or overseas destinations. Alice made many lifelong friends through her many customers at Goodfellow Air Force Base and other businesses. For many years, Alice was proud to be the local agent for American Red Ball, a transfer company which is based in Indianapolis. Alice and her sister, Geneva Wilhite, were charter members of the Beta Theta chapter of Phi Sigma Alpha, a sorority which was organized in 1965. She served as extension officer. She also was the sorority's representative at the local Queen of Hearts Ball. Alice was a member of the International Altrusa Club. She helped initiate the Meals for the Elderly program in San Angelo, a program which was dear to her. Alice was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in San Angelo. She was a Christian who was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. Prior to her stroke in 1988, she worked tirelessly helping her family and friends, always a person we could count on for love and support. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Dale Gustin of Big Spring; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Angelica Welch and their daughter, Elisa, of San Luis Potosi, Mexico; and grandchildren, Gary, Janie, Linda, Ronnie and Craig and their families of Arlington, Vicki McCollum and her husband, Don, and their children, Jeffrey, Bryan and Kristen McCollum of San Angelo, Richard Kilgore of Austin, Scott Kilgore and Raymond Welch Sr. of San Angelo. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; a beloved son, Raymond Welch Jr. in 1965; and her three sisters, Geneva Wilhite, Iola Terrell and Inez Mikeska. NOEMI GARCIA CASTRO STERLING CITY Noemi Garcia Castro, 64, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997, in Sterling County Nursing Home. Noemi was born Aug. 10, 1933, in Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico. She and Roman Castro were married on March 3, 1956, in Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico. Roman brought Noemi and their children to Sterling City in 1962. Noemi was a loving wife and devoted her life to her children, grandchildren and family. Noemi is survived by her husband of 41 years, Roman. Also surviving are her sons, Pete and his wife, Nell, and their children, Adrian and Spencer; Roman and his wife, Rose; and Joe and his wife, Dora, and their children, Joe Jr., Patricia and David. Also surviving are her brothers and sisters, Samuel Garcia, Raquel Lopez, Jose Garcia, Estella Garcia, Daniel Garcia, Sarah Martinez and Justino Garcia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Refugia Garcia; an infant son; her daughter, Patricia; and two sisters, Mercedes and Adela. Noemi was a loving friend to everyone she met, and she will be greatly missed by all. DOYLE SMITH Doyle Truman Smith, 76, of San Angelo passed away Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, in a local hospital. Doyle was born July 8, 1921, in South Bend to Joe and Oma Smith. He was a retired tool pusher in the oil field and was an Army veteran, having served in the 124th Cavalry. He had been a resident of San Angelo since 1951. Doyle is survived by his mother, Oma Smith of Graham; three daughters, Doylene Drury and her husband, Rick, of Swansea, Ill., Edwina Murphy of Valrico, Fla., and Janelle Sepulveda and her husband, David, of San Angelo; a brother, Roy Smith of Wichita Falls; eight grandchildren, Matthew Drury, Mark Drury, Scott Murphy, Lisa Murphy, Tyler Miller, Davy Sepulveda, Stacy Sepulveda and Jessica Sepulveda; a great-grandson, Xavier Drury; and other loving family members. Thomasson Griggs, longtime resident of Tom Green County and San Angelo, died at Gracy Woods Nursing Center in Austin on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, 1997, at the age of 92. Born Gladys Thomasson on Sept. 11, 1905, in Fayette County near Flatonia, Gladys was the younger of the two children of Byron C. and Maude Ella Calhoun Thomasson. Her great-grandparents, Thomasson and Calhoun, came to Central Texas by wagon train from Tennessee and Alabama in the early 1850s. In 1920, when Gladys was 15, the Thomasson family moved from Fayette County to Carlsbad, near San Angelo, where, on Dec. 24, 1926, Gladys was married to John Perry Griggs. In 1944, John and Gladys and their two sons moved from Carlsbad to San Angelo, where Gladys remained in her home in Lake View until 1988 when she moved to Austin. She is survived by her son, Charles, of Austin; her son and daughter-in-law, Carroll and Mary Ann of Michigan City, Ind.; a granddaughter, Carolyn, of Michigan City; grandsons, Edward of Waukesha, Wis., and David of Buffalo, N.Y.; great-grandsons, Brandon and Zachary of Waukesha; a niece, Mrs. Cecil A. Gonzales, 75, joined his heavenly family. He passed on at 4:05 p.m. in Reagan Memorial Hospital after a battle with cancer. Mr. Gonzales was born on Feb. 16, 1922, in Remolino, Mexico. He married Herlinda Flores on Oct. 20, 1951, and they began their life together as ranchers. They settled with their family in Texon in 1963. Eugenio worked there as overseer on the Lacy Way Ranch until 1981, when he moved to Big Lake. He then worked at Reagan Memorial Hospital, where he made many friends, until his retirement in 1985. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Clementina; and a son, Eugenio Jr. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Herlinda Gonzales; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rosalinda and Mario M. GEORGIA FAYE LONG On Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, Georgia Faye Long passed away in Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco, Texas, from complications related to heart surgery. She was born Georgia Faye Smith in Crockett, Texas, Oct. 28, 1931. She was brought to Carlsbad, Texas, as an infant and lived her whole life in the Carlsbad-San Angelo area. She enjoyed working for the public for many years. After business college, she worked for local lawyers, as a church secretary, in the county tax office, four years for the Department of Public Safety and finally settling into working for the Texas Highway Department for 29 years. She was active in many local organizations. She was secretary for the San Angelo Emergency Corps, secretary for the San Angelo Saddle Club and was active in many capacities for the Women's Bowling League. She especially enjoyed family events and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Charlie Long; her son, Ricky and his wife, Tanya; her daughter, Charlotte Sebesta and her husband, Charlie; two grandsons, Seth and Sean Long; three granddaughters, Rebecca Abalos and Cortney and Callie Sebesta; and a very close friend, Lucy Baker. ELIZABETH SUMMERS HAGOOD JUNCTION - Elizabeth ``Betty'' Summers Hagood was born Oct. 26, 1912. She passed away at home on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1997. Betty was born in Navasota, Texas, to Don and Nannie Allen Summers. She spent her early years on the Allen ranch with her mother, grandmother, Emma Dall Allen, and her uncles, Ed and Raymond Allen. She attended school at the Allen school, the Segovia school and graduated from Tivy High School in 1929. She attended Westmoreland College in San Antonio. She then returned to Junction to the Phillips ranch where she and her stepfather, John Phillips, ranched for a living. She married Luke Hagood on Sept. 24, 1938, in Junction. Betty was active in many civic and community affairs, including Girl Scouts, the Presbyterian Women of the Church and the Easter pageant. She was a charter member of the Cactus Study Club and a past-president of the A&M Mothers' Club. Betty's many friends will always remember visiting with her over coffee at her kitchen table. But above all, her greatest devotion was to her family. Betty was preceded in death by her mother, Nannie; her stepfather, John; her uncles, Ed and ``Honey''; her grandson, Karl Berry; and her husband, Luke. VARNADORE ROBERT LEE - Morris G. Varnadore of Houston went to be with the Lord Thursday, Nov. 27, 1997. He was born Jan. 20, 1921, in Robert Lee to Henry C. and Grace Landers Vanadore. Morris retired in 1983, having operated his own company Varnadore Pipe and Steel for several years. Prior to that time, he was a representative for Southwestern Pipe in Midland and Houston. Ashley, (USAF retired), a San Angelo resident for the past 27 years died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1997, at his residence. Col. Ashley had a long and distinguished military career in the U.S. Air Force. During his 27 years in the Air Force, he served in the China, India and Burma Theatre during World War II. He also taught atomic warfare while stationed in Oberammergau, West Germany. While serving at Maxwell Air Force Base he was an instructor at the Air War College. He remained an active alumnus. Some other assignments were the Pentagon, in Virginia, at March Air Force Base, Calif., Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., Fort Belvoir, Va., and Norton Air Force Base, Calif. He retired at HillAir Force Base in Ogden, Utah, in 1968. He remained active in the military community through the Air Force Association. After his military retirement he moved to Columbia, Mo., to pursue his Ph.D. in journalism at the University of Missouri. Later, moving to San Angelo he taught journalism at Angelo State University for one year. He retired a second time to pursue his own writings. Col. Ashley (USAF retired), a San Angelo resident for the past 27 years died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1997, at his residence. Col. Ashley had a long and distinguished military career in the U.S. Air Force. During his 27 years in the Air Force, he served in the China, India and Burma Theatre during World War II. He also taught atomic warfare while stationed in Oberammergau, West Germany. While serving at Maxwell Air Force Base he was an instructor at the Air War College. He remained an active alumnus. Some other assignments were the Pentagon, in Virginia, at March Air Force Base, Calif., Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., Fort Belvoir, Va., and Norton Air Force Base, Calif. He retired at Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah, in 1968. He remained active in the military community through the Air Force Association. After his military retirement he moved to Columbia, Mo., to pursue his Ph.D. in journalism at the University of Missouri. Later, moving to San Angelo, he taught journalism at Angelo State University for one year. He retired a second time to pursue his own writings. Col. Ashley is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Doyle Ashley; his son, R.M. Ashley and his daughter-in-law, Joyce; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She and Lawrence ``Blackie'' Williamson were married Oct. 27, 1941, in St. James Episcopal Church. Pat was a longtime resident of Menard County and was a ranchwoman. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Fort McKavett Chapter 783 Order of the Eastern Star and the Fort McKavett Cemetery Association. YOLANDA CASTRO Yolanda Castro, 35, of San Antonio died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, in an automobile accident. Memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Edward Lopez, pastor of River City Baptist Church, officiating. Yolanda was born Jan. 22, 1962, in Lubbock and had lived in San Antonio for the past 15 years. She graduated from Lubbock Coronado High School in 1980 and from San Antonio College, School of Nursing, in 1988. She was employed by SRI Nursing Agency as a traveling registered nurse, currently working at Odessa Medical Center. Survivors include her father, Barney Castro of Rogers, Ark.; her mother, Sue Castro of San Angelo; two brothers, Rodney Castro and wife, Peggy, of San Antonio and Barney Castro and wife, Kristie, of Dallas; a sister, JenniferCastro of Gallup, N.M.; her grandfather, Juan Cardenas of Lubbock; a nephew, Kaleb Castro; and several aunts and uncles. The family requests that memorials be made to a favorite children's charity. Yolanda lived life to the fullest, traveling to the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico and throughout the U.S. She was a caring daughter, sister and friend and will be greatly missed.
