LANDERS MENARD - Emmie E. Landers, 96, the last of her generation of a Menard County pioneer family, died of pneumonia and congestive heart failure in Menard Manor on Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997. Emmie Eugenia was born on May 10, 1901, to Anna and Fritz Luckenbach in Menard at their home on San Saba Avenue. When she was about 10, the family moved into the new house five blocks south on Bevans Street, where she and three older sisters and a younger brother grew up. She attended Menard schools and the University of Texas at Austin. Emmie and Roger Q. Landers were married at the ``big house'' in Menard on Jan. 1, 1925. After the dance celebrating the last of the Luckenbach girls to get married, they drove to the ranch where Roger had set up residence 12 miles south of Menard with 13 gates to open on the way. Emmie said that after the first few gates, her feet were hurting so much from dancing in new shoes that she got Roger to open the rest. They lived on the ranch until fall 1990, when they moved to the Menard Manor. Although she was an active hand in the early days on the ranch before the children started arriving, Emmie soon concentrated her energy on child-rearing and supporting them in church and school activities in town. She was a perpetual room mother and helped at anything that helped the school. She was active in the PTA, becoming its president in 1947 and strongly supporting the Nov. 11 parade and fund-raising auction. In 1956, she was the homecoming queen of the parade. She provided funds to buy new uniforms for the band in the late 1940s and continued her interest in community education projects as late as 1993 with Project Head Start, while she was a resident in the Menard Manor in the same building. Emmie worked hard to maintain the viability of the First Presbyterian Church of Menard in which she had grown up. Assisting in Sunday school at first, then as an officer in the auxiliary, eventually a church elder, she maintained an active church membership until she could no longer walk. She kept a Christ-centered faith when dealing with people and happenings in the community. She was confident that things would turn out all right with prayer and hard work and the Lord's help. Although she might have volunteered to open gates when Roger drove the pickup to feed livestock on occasion, she always insisted that she was a city girl, and much of her energy after the children left the nest was spent on community activities other than education. She was active in the Menard Garden Club and a charter member in the longest-running bridge club in Menard until her 90s. She was an officer in the El Progresso Club, a community support group, which began in 1937 and lasted until 1987. When the Menard Hospital was begun in the 1960s, Emmie became a ``pink lady'' and served as a volunteer and officer for many years, then as a volunteer for the Menard Manor when the hospital closed. During the years of World War II, Emmie took on the responsibility of hosting convalescent soldiers from the McCloskey Hospital in Temple. Two soldiers per week through several summers resulted in more than 100 soldiers from across the county experiencing a week on the ranch. For this and all community activities, the family was recognized by the United States State Department in 1948, which sent a photographer from Washington to get publicity photos. Survivors include one daughter, Susanna Brown of Menard; three sons and daughters-in-law, Roger Q. Jake Landers Jr. and Helen of San Angelo, Fritz E. Landers and Jimmie Gail of Mason and John Brooks Landers II and Barbara Jo of Austin; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
