Cecil and Johnnie Lee Blakeney were married June 3, 1950, in Menard. He was a heavy-equipment operator for the city and county of Menard. He loved farming and ranching, playing 42 and fishing. Arrangements are by Rains-Seale Funeral Home. Irene was born April 7, 1946, in Lamesa, the eldest daughter of O.C. Crawford and the late Georgie M. Miles. During her life, she lived in Texas, New Mexico, Florida and South Africa. At the time of her death, she resided in San Angelo and was the branch manager for Jim Walter Homes. She loved animals and the outdoors. She painted wildlife scenes and was an avid gardener. His favorite memories were of attending Bloys Camp meetings in Fort Davis as a boy and then being able to attend later in life with family members. He was extremely adept at learning new languages and enjoying learning about their cultures.Robert returned to the United States in 1988 and attended Oklahoma State University, as well as the University of Texas at Austin.In January 1997, he moved to Baltimore. WILLIAM LINDSEY `BILL' PALMER William Lindsey ``Bill'' Palmer, 82, of San Angelo passed away Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, in a local hospital.Mr. Palmer was born Jan. 3, 1915, in Knickerbocker to William L. and Ola Mae Arthur Palmer.Always a self-starter, as a small boy of 10 years, Bill sold Standard-Times newspapers on the downtown street corners of San Angelo. He graduated valedictorian from Tankersley High School in 1932. In 1938, he married Beulah Ruth Dobson of Eola.In 1943, Bill started Palmer Feed & Supply, which remained his main interest and his legacy to his two sons and grandsons. Bill also leaves behind farming and ranching interest in Runnels and Concho counties.He is a member of the First Baptist Church of San Angelo and the Caleb Sunday school class.Mr. Palmer was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William L. Mr. Palmer was born Jan. 3, 1915, in Knickerbocker to William L. and Ola Mae Arthur Palmer. Always a self-starter, as a small boy of 10 years, Bill sold Standard-Times newspapers on the downtown street corners of San Angelo. He graduated valedictorian from Tankersley High School in 1932. In 1938, he married Beulah Ruth Dobson of Eola. In 1943, Bill started Palmer Feed & Supply, which remained his main interest and his legacy to his two sons and grandsons. Bill also leaves behind farming and ranching interest in Runnels and Concho counties. He is a member of the First Baptist Church of San Angelo and the Caleb Sunday school class. Mr. Palmer was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William L. Palmer, one brother and two sisters. Polly was a graduate of Sonora High School, San Angelo College and Shannon School of Nursing. She practiced her chosen profession of nursing with love and pride for 42 years, before retiring in 1993. She practiced her love of the Lord in the Hillcrest Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, Duane Drew and his wife, Marcy, and children, Anjanette and Jared, all of San Angelo; a daughter, Diana Bugg and her husband, David, and children, David Lee, Aimee, Nathan and Monica, all of Corsicana; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Jimmy Allen of California, Louis Watson of Sterling City and Wilburn Watson, Weldon Allen, Bobby Allen and Stacy Allen, all of San Angelo; sisters, Joyce Dupree of California, Winnie Easmyer of Missouri, Shirley Foley of San Angelo and Barbara Euler of New Mexico; her mother-in-law, Marie King of San Antonio; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and dear friends. KATHY SCHKADE Kathy Schkade, 36, of Odessa and formerly of San Angelo, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, in an Odessa hospital. She was a member of Lake View Baptist Church and had been the G.A. director at Lake View Baptist Church from 1993 to 1996. Kathy graduated from Angelo State University in 1982 and was a certified public accountant. Kathy was a loving mother and wife who had a great love of her Lord, love of her family and love of the children of the world. She will be greatly missed. He was a veteran, serving in World War II as a medic. Jesus was owner of Barron's Boot and Shoe Repair in downtown San Angelo for 30 years. Jesus was married to Celia Ramirez on Feb. 16, 1942. He was a member and deacon at Primera Iglesia Bautista. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eusebio and Maria Barron. JAMES WILLIAMS ELDORADO - James Thomas Williams, 87, passed away Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, in a local hospital. James was born Oct. 10, 1910, in Eden to John Thomas and Mary Maetta Williams. They lived there until 1929, at which time the family moved to Schleicher County and settled in the Reynolds community. In 1935, James married Florence Podamy of Buckholts. They lived in the Reynolds community for eight years, in Eldorado for 25 years and then moved to their place four miles east of Eldorado, where James spent the remainder of his life. James loved farming and ranching - ever anxious for more rain. One of his last questions was ``Did it rain last night?'' During the 1960s, James worked with the Boy Scouts of America and was a member of the Lion's Club and the Chamber of Commerce. In 1952, he was elected as a member of the board of directors of the Federal Land Bank of Sonora and served in that capacity for 36 years. James is survived by his wife, Florence Williams of the home; two daughters, Jimmie Dell Wiegand of Atlanta and June Davis and her husband, Morris, of Austin; one son, Keith Williams and his wife, Linda, of Austin; 11 grandchildren, Brandi, Jill, Vince, Vic and Jimmie Wayne Wiegand of Atlanta, and Tres Davis, Ellen, Imad Salem and Lynn Davis and Scott and Ross Williams, all of Austin; one brother, Harold Williams of Rye, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Rita was born in Lubbock on Oct. 11, 1943, the daughter of James Marvin Mowery and Mamie Lack Blair Mowery. She married Winford Gore Oct. 11, 1960, in Lubbock. While living in Ballinger, she worked at the F&M Bank and later moved to Dallas, where she was the billing coordinator in a local doctor's office. DAYTON SMITH BALLINGER - Dayton Smith, 90, of Ballinger died at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, in Ballinger Memorial Hospital. He was born Feb. 18, 1907, in Lampasas County. His parents were Gib Smith and Laura Jerry Smith. The family moved from Kempner where they operated a barber shop and grocery store, until both businesses were destroyed by fire. In 1929, Dayton was married to Era Burnette from the Eagle Branch community. Era passed away on Sept. 1, 1992. Dayton Smith and his father, Gib, opened their first store in Ballinger in the late '20s .. then were forced to close their business during the depression of 1930 and 1931. Both Dayton and his dad were not able to say ``No'' to people who needed credit for groceries. Dayton worked for 15 years for the C.O.D. Grocery, owned by J.B. Dankworth and ``Cap'' Middleton. Going into business for themselves, Dayton and Era ran ``Dayton's Food Store'' in Ballinger for about 30 years, retiring in 1972. Survivors of Dayton Smith include one son and one daughter-in-law, Dean and Lois Smith of Ballinger; three grandchildren, Dena Smith and her daughter, Jill Grun, and a special family friend, Lori Smith, all of South Padre Island, Lynn Smith and his wife, Laura, and their three sons, Tyler, Chris and Kyle, all of Ballinger, and two step-great-grandchildren, Chris and Jenny Klein of Comanche, and Dian Leick and her husband, Paul, and their twin daughters, Lauran and Kaitlin, of Tega Cay, near Charlotte, N.C. Toothman of Weirton, W.Va., and one nephew, Mike Toothman of Morgantown, W.Va. Bill was superintendent of roads and grounds at Goodfellow Air Force Base when he retired and had worked all over the western United States before moving to San Angelo. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Seabees in the South Pacific. Bill was a member of AFGE No. 1816. He lived in San Angelo for 52 years and was a member of Park Heights Baptist Church. He married Grace Marie Athey on Nov. 21, 1932, in McCamey; their 65th wedding anniversary was celebrated in November of 1997. Mattilyn was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church and was currently a member of the Sarah Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Pocahontas Chapter of the D.A.R. and past president of the Victory Study Club. BOB L. `BOPPY' DAVIS SAN ANTONIO - Bob L. ``Boppy'' Davis died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, in San Antonio. He was born Oct. 16, 1920, in Robert Lee and married Nona Catherine Inman in 1945. Bob L. served as county judge of Coke County and later entered the investment banking business. He was instrumental in financing numerous schools, hospitals and municipal projects throughout the state. He was active in youth activities and served as a deacon at Northeast Baptist Church in San Antonio. Besides his wife, Nona, survivors include his sister, Dean Kinsey of Robert Lee; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Jim and Kathy Davis of Arlington, Dr. Ken and Kitty Davis of Conroe, and son Charlie Davis of San Antonio; granddaughters, Hilary Davis of Narragansett, R.I., and Ashley Davis of Fort Worth; and numerous nieces and nephews. Marion was born Nov. 26, 1913, in San Angelo to Lawrence Marion and Mary Idella Barrow Balch. He married Sue Belle Lindsey on June 16, 1935, in San Angelo. Mr. Balch had been involved in many industries, including the feed business, farm equipment, an automobile dealership, and farming and ranching. He served for several years on the San Angelo SchoolBoard and was past vice president. He was past president of the Board of City Development and served on other various community organizations. Marion was a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and was an active member for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Bob Balch, who served with the U.S. Army in World War II and was killed in the Philippines in 1945. Survivors include his wife, Sue Bell Balch of San Angelo; one daughter, Marion Sue Jones of Boerne; two sons, Donald Robert Balch and wife, Kathy, of Abilene and Gilbert Lawrence Balch of Baird; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Ben McCulloch, Clayton Jones, Clifton Jones, Mark Balch, Deron Balch and Gary Golightly. Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Covington, J.B. Miller, Troy Lindsey, Jay Lindsey, Tom Buckingham and Archie Bomer.
