HOWARD BROCK BRONTE - William George ``Howard'' Brock, 85, of Norton and formerly of Bronte, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, in Ballinger Memorial Hospital. He was born May 14, 1912, to Sam and Mabel ``May'' Brock. Howard attended school in Bronte. He served in the Army during World War II in the Engineer Corps. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Good Conduct and Victory medals. After the war, he returned to Bronte where he farmed, ranched and served as commissioner of Coke County for 18 years until his retirement. While serving as county commissioner, he made sure many improvements were made to county roads and bridges. During this time, the most important improvement for the residents of Bronte was the construction of the Bronte City Park and swimming pool. Howard loved music and treasured his favorite instrument, his fiddle. As a young boy, he won numerous blue ribbons at the old fiddlers' contests. He always enjoyed entertaining family and friends because music was his favorite hobby and as he said many times, ``Music is my life.'' He and his band played at country dances in Coke County and in numerous surrounding counties. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Will Estelle Brock; two daughters, Patsy June and Judy Lynn Brock; and one brother, Hiram Brock. Mrs. Eckhardt was born in Eldorado, Kan., on Aug. 28, 1918, and later the family lived in West Virginia and Texas. She attended West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas. She married William A. White in 1938, and they moved to San Angelo. He preceded her in death in 1967. Edith and Dr. Gus Eckhardt were married Aug. 11, 1977. She was active in community volunteer activities, including Planned Parenthood and the Well Baby Clinic. She was a member of the Junior League of San Angelo and served as president in 1958 and 1959. Earlier, she represented the Junior League at regional meetings and at the annual conference of the Association of Junior Leagues in Washington, D.C. She was a former member of the Shannon Hospital Auxiliary and a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church. MARY MERRICK CRAIG BIG SPRING - Mary Merrick Craig of Monahans, formerly of Forsan and Big Spring, was born in Floydada on Aug. 8, 1905, and left this earth to live with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 9, 1998. Her parents, Charles and Sarah Merrick, moved to Howard County when she was 5 months old. She attended school at Moore and Big Spring and later attended the National Business College in Abilene. She worked for Morrison and Morrison Law Office after completing business college. She married Glen U. Roberts in December of 1924. He preceded her in death. They had two children, Norma Roberts in 1930 and Rodney Roberts in 1933. She later worked for a dentist, Dr. Richardson, as a receptionist and for Big Spring Motor Co. until her marriage to Jim Craig on June 5, 1943. They lived in Forsan and lived on the American Amaricaubo lease for seven years. They then bought a grocery store in Forsan, where they operated The Craig Food Store from September 1950 until 1966. They continued living in Forsan until 1980, when Jim Craig passed away. Mrs. Craig then moved to Big Spring and lived there until 1992, when she moved to Monahans to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Bob Baker. She was a member of the Third and Dwight Street Church of Christ in Monahans. She is survived by a daughter, Norma Baker and husband, Bob, of Monahans; a son, Rodney Roberts and wife, Gloria, of Shreveport, La.; five grandchildren, Debbie Bennett and husband, David, of Goldthwaite, Robert Baker and wife, Gina, of Monahans, Amy Rambo and husband, Cary, of Menard, Randy Roberts and wife, Annette, of Big Spring, and Roni Roberts of Shreveport; and 10 great-grandchildren, Robby and Lori Daniel of Odessa, Jenny Bennett of Goldthwaite, Lecia and Aaron Baker of Monahans, Zachary and Riley Rambo of Menard, and Jeremy Collier, Paige King and Spencer Roberts, all of Big Spring. He served two terms and then was elected as mayor, where he again served two terms. VIRGINIA COPELAND STERLING CITY - On Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, West Texas lost one of its greatest ladies. Virginia Lee Gay Copeland, 75, passed away suddenly in the midst of participating in yet another of her beloved community's affairs. Virginia was born Jan. 5, 1923 in Bartlesville, Okla., to Alex Gay and Jennie McKissick Gay. She was raised in Cherokee, Texas, and graduated from Cherokee High School. A graduate of Shannon Hospital School of Nursing, she worked as a registered nurse for 35 years and served as director of nursing in Sterling City. Since moving to Sterling City in 1945, she devoted her life to taking care of her community. Virginia assisted with many births in Sterling County and continued to have a positive impact on the health and lives of many in the county, even after her retirement from nursing. Virginia married John Copeland Jr. on Jan. 12, 1945, and lived and ranched on the Divide in Sterling County. John remained the love of her life for 53 years. The center of her family's life, she was an avid supporter of the activities of her children and grandchildren. ``Meme'' to her grandchildren and their friends, Virginia's oven was always warm and her door was always open to welcome them into her home. Her care and concern will truly be missed along with all the good food so lovingly prepared and shared. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Sterling City and was active in community activities. Virginia enjoyed extensive travel with her many friends and family. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Lester Gay. JOE McCUTCHEN BRONTE - Joe Dorman ``Binks'' McCutchen, 73, died at 3:10 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at his home. The son of John Edward and Daisy Esther McDorman McCutchen, Mr. McCutchen was born Sept. 12, 1924, in Coke County near Robert Lee. He attended Robert Lee schools before joining the Navy, where he served in the Pacific during World War II. Binks married Geraldine Lasswell of Bronte on May 30, 1945, in San Angelo. He was a lifelong Coke County rancher and the couple made their home on the ranch and in Bronte for the next 53 years. Mr. McCutchen was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bronte, where he served as an elder for several years and as a Methodist youth fellowship counselor. He enjoyed working with youth, and was a 4-H adult leader involved with livestock show projects, the 4H horse club and playdays. He donated the land for the county 4H rifle range. Mr. McCutchen is survived by his wife, Jerry; one daughter, Sharon and her husband, Steve Kelton of Bronte; grandsons, Shea Kelton of Bronte and Shane Kelton and wife, Stacy, of Jayton; and two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Kourtney Kelton, both of Jayton. She also completed graduate work at UTPB and received an early childhood certification. Mrs. Crawford married J.P. Crawford, her college sweetheart, in Grandfalls Aug. 20, 1957. They moved to Midland in 1960. She taught piano lessons privately for 34 years. Mrs. Crawford was a member of the First Baptist Church for 37 years and taught a five-year-old Sunday school class for 25 years, and was a member of Piano Teachers Association and Musicians Club of Midland. A homegoing service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, in Floydada. Mother Bennett was born July 22, 1919, in Falls County to Sidney and Rosie Smith. She was the third of nine siblings, of which three preceded her in death. She married Willie Bennett on Dec. 2, 1935. He preceded her in death, along with her parents and four of her children. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at a very early age. This faith continued to guide her until she joined the Heavenly Host. She always had a sermon, irregardless of the receptivity of the audience. She moved to San Angelo from Floydada in 1991 to be closer to her family. She moved to the Rio Concho Manor, where she made many friends with her lovely smile, optimistic attitude and godly wisdom. Survivors include eight daughters, Mrs. Opal Allen of San Angelo, Mrs. Willie Bennett of Irving, Mrs. Johnnie Sandifar of Dallas, Mrs. Betty Haliburton, Mrs. Margaret McGilvery and Mrs. Carolyn Thompson, all of Fort Worth, Mrs. Doris Penagraph of Beaumont and Mrs. Katherine Hines of Hayworth, Calif.; two sons, retired Master Sgt. Walter L. Bennett of San Antonio and Ralph L. Bennett of Corpus Christi; two brothers, the Rev. Hoyle Samuel Smith of Big Lake and Mr. Roosevelt Smith of Lubbock; two sisters, Mrs. Odell Crownover and Mrs. Odessa Coulson, both of Fort Worth; 32 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of children of the Rainbow and friends.
