There, he was active in many church, school and community organizations. One of his and Clara's first priorities was to work with several other families to see that a Catholic church was built in Wall. They were successful, and Mr. Gerngross became a charter member of the St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Chapter 4316 and the St. Ambrose Men's Society. He served on the Wall Independent School District School Board for many years. Mr. Gerngross was a member of the first board of the Wall Co-Op Gin and remained on that board for 30 years. In the early 1940s, he was instrumental in getting electricity in the rural Wall area through the REA. He and several neighbors went door to door asking people to join the REA. This was not an easy task because people were reluctant to join because they couldn't envision enough uses for electricity to justify the $5 charge. Mr. Gerngross worked hard, but he also knew how to enjoy life. He played Skat regularly and was hard to beat in dominoes. He especially enjoyed being surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
