ALONZO `CHANGO' MARTINEZ GALINDO MIDLAND - Beloved son, brother and friend Alonzo ``Chango'' Martinez Galindo passed away on Feb. 5, 1998, in his home surrounded by his loving family. Alonzo was born on Oct. 19, 1956, in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Rosa and Gaspar Galindo. One of nine children, he was nicknamed Chango as a child because of the many ways he used to climb on a horse. Alonzo attended Trinity School of Midland and graduated from Lee High School in 1976. His great love of horses and the guidance of his father led him into a career training and playing polo horses. Alonzo's incredible talent with horses was recognized with the formation of the first polo team at Trinity School. He and his friends later formed the first Lee High School Polo Team. They went on to win the prestigious National Interscholastic Polo Tournament in 1974 and 1975. This was the first time the tournament had ever been won by a public school team. Alonzo also played with his brothers on a team known as the ``Flying Galindos'' and captured the elusive National President's Cup Trophy in 1981. In his lifetime, he played polo throughout the United States. Many of the horses that he made have gone on to win Best Playing Pony honors in major U.S. tournaments. Alonzo was an important fixture of the Midland Polo Club for more than 30 years. It will never be the same without him. His talent with horses was matched only by his talent for working with people. His contagious smile and outspoken nature had a way of putting those around him at ease. He shared his love of horses with many, taking time to teach others how to ride and care for them. There was not a thing he wouldn't do for a friend, old or new. Those who were able to share part of Alonzo's life usually have a funny story to tell of this popular polo player. Alonzo fought a long and courageous battle with cancer. At Alonzo's request, his youngest brother Mario returned to Midland to manage his health care for the duration of his illness. Alonzo lived much longer than had first been anticipated, aided by the love and support of his family (especially his mother, brother Mario and sister Rosie) and many friends. The calls of support from friends and acquaintances across the country have been phenomenal. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Alonzo and his family are indebted to Hospice of Midland, particularly Kenny, for the care and support they received. Donations can be made to Hospice of Midland in the name of ``Galindo Memorial.'' The family hopes to initiate a hospice awareness program for the Hispanic community. He was preceded in death by his father, Gaspar O. Galindo in 1986. Galindo of West Palm Beach, Fla.; sisters, Marie E. Galindo and Rosa E.
