The son of J.R. and Ara McManus Mims, he was born May 29, 1908, in Sherwood close to the family homestead on Rocky Creek in Tom Green County. During their early school years, Mr. Mims and his two elder sisters, Robbie and Lonnie, were taught by a governess on the ranch. They attended high school in San Angelo, boarding with their grandmother, Molly Richmond Mims. After graduation from San Angelo High School, he began college at John Tarleton College in Stephenville. Two years later, Mr. Mims transferred to the newly created Texas Technological College in Lubbock, where he graduated in 1928 with a degree in agriculture. The class of 1929 was the first four-year class in Tech's history. In college, he was a member of the school's stock-judging teams and participated in national competitions. The onset of the Depression made his immediate return to ranching essential as he was needed to work the two family ranches: Rocky Creek Ranch in Tom Green County and the Knapp Ranch in Coke County, home of his father and stepmother, Agnes Demere Mims. In the mid-1930s, he renewed his acquaintance with Marie E. Gerber at old-time dances in San Angelo. They met in the late 1920s when she was hired to teach at the one-room Walnut School in Coke County where Mr. Mims' youngest sister, Helen, was a student. Marie and Elton Mims were married at sunrise on Easter Sunday, April 21, 1935, in the First Presbyterian Church. For the next 40 years, they made their home on the family's Knapp Ranch near Water Valley. At first, Elton Mims was his father's general ranch manager. In 1941, J.R. Mims sold most of his livestock to his children and their spouses. From that time until his own retirement, Elton Mims operated the Knapp in partnership with his brother-in-law, Paul Coulter. He maintained connections with the Texas Tech College of Agriculture, keeping up to date on range and ranch management. In 1983, the Coke County Soil and Water Conservation District named him ``Conservationist of the Year.'' He was a faithful member of the Methodist church, both in Water Valley and in San Angelo, often serving as a delegate to state, national and world conferences. He also helped preserve the history of West Texas through his active work in county and regional historical associations. During the 1950s, he was an elected board member of the Water Valley Independent School District.
