Harkey of San Saba; a son, Dwight Harkey of Hunt; a daughter, Jean Lauer of Del Rio; a sister, Lela Pearl Stanley of May; five grandchildren; five great- grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EUNA LOIS LOWRANCE Mrs. Euna Lowrance, formerly of Fruitland Farm Road, San Angelo, Texas, died April 7, 1998, in Westhaven, Conn. Mrs. Lowrance was born in Blossom, Texas, on Aug. 21, 1905, the eldest daughter of Anne and George Hardee. On April 29, 1924, she married Richard R. Lowrance, and they made San Angelo their home in 1929. Mr. and Mrs. Lowrance were well-known for their work in the community and one of their businesses, Lowrance Swimming Pool, which they owned and operated for 25 years. Her husband preceded her in death on June 1, 1991. Euna attended San Angelo College and she received a Bachelor of Science degree from Sul Ross University in 1960. She was a member of Alpha Chi and Kappa Delta Pi, an honor society of education. In 1969, the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers conferred an honorary life membership on Mrs. Lowrance in recognition of distinguished service to children and youth. She also received from the Board of Education of the San Angelo Public Schools a Certificate of Merit for her years of service to the youth of the community. Mrs. Lowrance was a retired schoolteacher. She taught at Day Elementary School for 10 years. Euna was a life member of the National PTA, a founding member of Lake View United Methodist Church and a charter member of Lake View United Methodist Women. She belonged to the Lake View Homemakers Club and was a member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Lowrance is survived by three children, Richard H. Lowrance of Atlanta, Ga., Bryon R. Lowrance of Central Lake, Mich., and Carol Penney of New Haven, Conn. She also is survived by three grandsons, Richard ``Rick'' R. Lowrance of Sheridan, Wyo., Bruce Lowrance of Hawaii and Scott Lowrance of Southfield, Mich.; three great-grandchildren, Rachel, Timothy and Peter David Lowrance, all of Southfield; and one surviving sibling, Mrs. Ann Wilson of Tallahassee, Fla. For the last years of her life she lived with her daughter in Connecticut. She also is survived by a care giver, William Harris of Oxford, Conn. Ruth was born May 15, 1914, in Normal, Ill., to Josephine Pyal Ingle and Howard Pyal. She attended schools in Normal and Bloomington, Ill. Ruth and her husband, Greenwood Murch, were early residents of Bullhead City, Ariz. She enjoyed being an Army wife and especially liked tours of duty in Germany and Japan before they retired to Arizona. Ruth was a licensed beautician and owned a shop in Bullhead City. She was an active member of the auxiliary of the Elks Lodge for which her husband was exalted ruler. Ruth was involved in the Rotary, Shrine, American Legion and VFW Post 10005 along with Mr. Murch. Mrs. Murch was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her nephew, Jack Roberts of San Angelo. He was active in high school sports, playing football and baseball for Eldorado High School. He attended Texas Tech in Lubbock on a football scholarship and then attended Texas A&M. Edward married Ethel Mae Chilcoat Feb. 5, 1938, in Eldorado. He worked for Humble Oil from the 1930s until he enlisted in the Navy in 1942 where he served on a supply ship, the USS Sculptor, until 1945. He returned to work for EXXON for more than 40 years until his retirement, when he and Ethel Mae made their home in Odessa. Edward loved all sports as a spectator and as a competitor. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed his golfing friends for many years. He also loved to flyfish and spent many summers fishing the streams of New Mexico. Edward was a member of Crescent Park Baptist Church. Mr. Ratliff is survived by his wife, Ethel Mae Ratliff of Odessa; cousin, Durwood Ratliff and wife, Frances, of Midland; niece, Carole Stoker and husband, Ray, of Odessa; nephew and niece, Craig and Cathleen Stoker; and many other nieces and nephews. BLANKS W. OGLESBY DEL RIO - Blanks W. Oglesby, longtime West Texas wool and mohair buyer, died on April 8, 1998, in Midland, where he was living at the Trinity Towers Retirement Center. He was 86 years of age. Mr. Oglesby was born in Mertzon, Texas, the son of Sam Oglesby and Caledonia Blanks Oglesby, longtime ranchers in West Texas. He had six brothers and a sister, all of whom preceded him in death. After graduating from Mertzon High School, Mr. Oglesby attended New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, N.M. After his time in New Mexico, he moved to San Angelo, where he worked as an office boy for the National Wool Marketing Corp. in 1932. With his interest in the wool business, Mr. Oglesby moved to Boston, Mass., where the action in the wool business was for prospective young wool buyers. He worked there as a wool grader until he moved back to Texas in 1935. He then began a short career as a traveling freight agent for a shipping company in Houston. After leaving the shipping business, Mr. Oglesby worked for a number of wool businesses which included Hills, Oglesby and Divine in Boston, Rankin Wool Warehouse Co. in Rankin and Santa Rita Wool Co. in San Angelo. In 1947, he went to work for the Fred Whitaker Co. in Boston as a West Texas and New Mexico wool buyer. In the early '50s, he went to work for Lobsitz Mills Co. of Newark, N.J., as a wool and mohair buyer and later managed the Associated Wool Processors of Texas scouring plant in Del Rio, which was owned by Lobsitz Mills. The scouring plant closed in 1970 with the death of its owner. In 1971, Blanks became a commission wool buyer and bought wool and mohair for several different companies. ANDREW EDINGTON KERRVILLE - Dr. Andrew Edington, a true man of God, was kind and just, full of wisdom and humor. Born Jan. 15, 1914, in Mobile, Ala., he completed a remarkable life of service on April 9, 1998. He received his bachelor's degree from Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College) and a master's degree from the University of Alabama. He was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from Austin College. Dr. Edington will be remembered as a teacher, coach, active churchman, community leader, speaker, author, storyteller, playwright, sportsman and friend. A decorated Naval officer, he served both in the Atlantic and Pacific during World War II. He was headmaster of the University Military School in Mobile, Ala., from 1946 to 1950 and was president of Schreiner Institute (now Schreiner College) from 1950 to 1971 and president emeritus since that time. He authored many books, among which were ``The Big Search,'' ``The Word Made Fresh,'' ``Monkeying With the Flood'' and ``The Camels Are Coming.'' He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and a Sunday school teacher for most of his 84 years. Many years were dedicated to a ministry at the Huntsville Prison, sharing his faith through the stories of the Bible. ``Well done, good and faithful servant.'' MARGARET `MAGGIE' HEARRELL SAYNER BRONTE - Margaret ``Maggie'' Hearrell Sayner of Tennyson went on to be with God on Thursday, April 9, 1998. Born in Maverick on June 14, 1903, Maggie grew up in Bronte. She lived in Tennyson for the 75 years following her marriage to her husband, Collins Sayner. Throughout these years, she was a wonderful helpmate to her husband. As a newlywed, living on the Sayner Ranch, she learned to raise chickens, turkeys and dogie lambs. Maggie loved flowers and was active in a garden club for many years. She and Collins were members of La Paloma Dance Club and enjoyed many Saturday evenings with their friends. She was a longtime member of the Bronte Baptist Church and, in later years, Tennyson Baptist Church. Her family and friends marveled at her sweet loving spirit during her years of poor health. We are grateful to God for sharing her with us. He was very proud of his time in the Air Force, having been awarded numerous medals for his outstanding expertise as a flight supervisor. Dan made friends very easily with his friendly and outgoing personality. He left hundreds of friends all over the United States from his time in the Air Force. She previously taught school in Blanton, Ballinger and Winters. She also taught third grade in Olney for 30 years. In 1986, he moved to Menard, where he opened and operated with his wife Marla ``The Emporium,'' an antique and collectible shop. He recently returned from Eagle Pass after opening ``Cross Country,'' a successful club in Eagle Pass. One of Doyce's loves was the Woolly Boogers Chili team, where he was known as ``Dr. Doyce.'' This team competed at many benefit cook-offs. Doyce was a fun- loving man who never met a stranger. And to those who knew him well, he had a gentle spirit. He was preceded in death by his father, Troy Lankford. He is survived by his sons, Donald R. He joined the Air Force, and after graduating from O.C.S., he became an O.S.I. agent stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base. He moved his family to Robert Lee in 1953 to become involved in the family Ford business. Cumbie served as mayor of Robert Lee and as president of the park board that planned and established the County Park in Robert Lee. He also was quite active in helping establish the Robert Lee golf course. Upon his father's retirement in 1966, Cumbie took over Ivey Motor Co. and through the years won many, many Ford Motor Co. awards and won Ford trips all over the world. The dealership won the North American Customer Excellence National Award for 27 years in a row. In 1990, he received The Chairman's Award, Ford Motor Co.'s highest award for customer satisfaction which is given to only 3 percent of all Ford dealers. Cumbie was an avid hunter and had collected trophies from Africa, Alaska and the Yukon Territory. She was a homemaker and active in St. Ambrose Catholic Church, where she was a member of St. Helen's Altar Society and Catholic Daughters of America. She was born Oct. 23, 1942, in Macon, Ga., and came to Texas as a child. She graduated from San Angelo Central High School in 1961. She married James E. Smith on April 11, 1968, in San Angelo. She was a registered histology technician and a certified AACP. She and her husband, Dr. Jimmy Smith, were partners in the Pioneer Vet Clinic in Winters since Aug. 10, 1974. Survivors include her husband, Jimmy Smith of Winters; her mom, Opal Pilmer of San Angelo; two brothers, Gordon Pilmer and wife, Debbie, and son, Jonathan, of Houston, and John Pilmer of San Antonio; two daughters, Sally Smith Arnold and husband, Brent, of Winters and Jamie ``Rabbit'' Smith of College Station; and a sister- in-law, Gayle Pilmer and children, Amy and Jody, of San Angelo. Ischar Sr., age 71, of Ballinger passed away Easter Sunday evening, April 12, 1998, in the Abilene Regional Hospital. Arrangements are by Rains-Seale Funeral Home. Gene was born on Nov. 17, 1926, in Ballinger, to Eugene A. and Cassie Clayton Ischar. He graduated from Ballinger High School in 1944 and then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He married Betty Hudgens on Jan. 13, 1951, in Ballinger. He started in the lumber business in 1952 and in June of 1976 he purchased the William P. Carey Lumber Co., which still stands on the original spot since the Town Lot sales in the 1800s, changing the name to Ballinger Lumber Co. He retired in December of 1988. Gene was an avid golfer and started caddying at age 11. He was given a membership to the Ballinger Country Club and had been a member ever since. He was a member and an elder of the First Christian Church in Ballinger and had been a member of the Ballinger Rotary Club for 27 years. He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Ballinger; two sons,Melvin Ischar and his wife, Sharon, and Clay Ischar and his wife, Teresa, all of Ballinger; two daughters, Vicki Cummings and Laura Mallory and her husband, Sam, all of San Angelo; and seven grandchildren, Wendi, Kimberli, Courtney, Mathew, Jacob, Hannah and Cody. He also is survived by three sisters, Lydia Fowler and her husband, Henry, of Ballinger, Ruby Kennedy of Artesia, N.M., and Alvenia (Pete) Sumners of Buckley, Wash.; and a host of nieces and nephews and lots of special friends. The men of the First Christian Church and Gene's golfing buddies will serve as honorary pallbearers.
