Mrs. Duke leaves many nieces, nephews and their families, for whom she had great affection. Nellie Duke grew up in Weatherford, Fort Worth and Miami. She graduated from Poly Technic High School and Texas Woman's College in Fort Worth. She and her beloved husband, Escal Franklin Duke, were married 64 years ago in Weatherford. They resided a number of years in Weatherford, also in Uvalde, Tuscaloosa, Ala., Abilene and San Angelo. The Dukes' love and devotion to one another was an inspiration to their family and all who knew them. In the 1950s, Mrs. Duke owned a successful welcome service in Abilene, and she took continuing pride in her role as a homemaker. At each of the universities where her husband taught, the University of Alabama, Hardin-Simmons University and Angelo State University, Mrs. Duke was active in campus activities and organizations, including the faculty wives' clubs. When the Dukes moved to San Angelo, she played an active role in the Federated Women's Club, in the Literary Review Club, the Tom Green County Historical Commission and the Tom Green County Historical Society. The latter association recently named Dr. and Mrs. Duke as life members. Mrs. Duke was devoted to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in San Angelo, a longtime member of the Elizabeth Sunday School Class and an officer of the auxiliary at the Baptist Memorials Center. Nellie Duke will be remembered with love and affection by her family and friends. She was always unselfish with her time and had great concern for others. She was most happy when she was surrounded by her loving husband and family. The family wishes that any memorials be sent to the First Baptist Church of San Angelo. JOHN KARL KOSCHAK JR. John Karl Koschak Jr. died Wednesday, April 15, 1998. He was born in Galveston, Texas, on Oct. 13, 1919, the son of Margaret and John Karl Koschak Sr. John graduated from Galveston Ball High School in 1937. While in Galveston, he was a member of several championship baseball teams, including a team which won the State Texas Champions in the 16-17-year-old division. In 1937, he was a member of a team which won the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Championship, progressing to a fourth-place finish in the National Championship Tournament held in Battle Creek, Mich. John had professional baseball offers but chose to attend the University of Texas at Austin on a baseball scholarship where he was the first baseman for the 1941 Southwest Conference championship team. He also played basketball and football in college. John's college career was interrupted by World War II, while he served in the Armed Forces as a pilot in the Army Air Corps. John married Helen Genevieve Ramsey of Eldorado on Sept. 25, 1943, in Austin, Texas. In 1947, the couple settled in San Angelo. During his business career, John owned and operated several local businesses, ultimately focusing his attention in the real-estate brokerage business. He was instrumental in many of the real-estate transactions which led to the development of southwest San Angelo, including Southland Park, commercial and industrial properties from Scherz Nursery to Beaty Road, Bentwood Country Club, Pecan Valley and other developments. John was a member of the First United Methodist Church of San Angelo. He also was a member of the Kiwanis and Optimist clubs. John contributed many hours of his time and knowledge coaching youth sports. John was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Genevieve; his children, Karl Koschak and wife, Carol, of Plano, Dr. Ramsey Koschak and wife, Michael, of San Angelo and Sheryl Pfluger and husband, Walter, of San Angelo; and seven grandchildren, Courtney Koschak, Ramsey Koschak and wife, Jodi, of Plano, Seth and Jordan Koschak of San Angelo, and August, Genny and Karl Pfluger of San Angelo. Byron Orand of Eldorado officiating. There will be a private graveside service at the silos. Grider was born on Feb. 18, 1938, in Lamesa to William Marion and Nellie Bigby Hays. He graduated from Ballinger High School in 1956 and from Texas Tech University in 1960. He received his juris doctorate from St. Mary's University at San Antonio, on Dec. 21, 1976. He became licensed as an attorney and counselor at law on June 10, 1977. He married Ann Wilbanks on Oct. 23, 1965, in Ballinger. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a practicing attorney in Ballinger and worked his ranches in southeast Runnels County, raising registered Hereford cattle and registered Quarter horses. He was a member of the First Christian Church and he held most offices and served on most of the committees in the Business Men's Bible Class. Glenn served in the Seabees from 1942 to 1947 as instructor of communications and in the civil service for 35 years as an electrician at Goodfellow Field. She was an active club woman; she had been a local unit president of the Parent-Teacher Association and an officer in the city council of PTA, also serving as district chairperson of the Parent-Teacher Association. She was a charter member and past president of the Insurance Women of San Angelo and had served in chairmanship positions for the Texas Federation of Insurance Women and for the National Association of Insurance Women. She had been a director, parliamentarian and secretary of the Altrusa Club and was a public-affairs chairman, serving on the Inter-Civic Council of the Board of City Development. In March of 1955, Mrs. Schneemann was appointed by the Board of Texas State Hospitals and Special Schools of Austin to serve as coordinator to help organize a volunteer advisory council for the activities at McKnight State Tuberculosis Hospital. She was a charter member of the League of Women Voters and Texas Beta Theta of Phi Sigma Alpha of which she served as president. She was a charter member and served as first president of the San Angelo Toastmistress Club and served as chairman of Council 7, South Central Region, International Toastmistress Clubs; she also served as parliamentarian and protocol chairman for the Texhoma Region of Toastmistress Clubs. She judged speech contests for the 4-H clubs for a 22-county area. She had judged Distributive Education Speech contests at Angelo State University and also impromptu and poetry speech contests at Central High School and area Jaycees and Jaycee-etts speech contests. In 1962, Mrs. Schneemann was named ``Woman of the Year'' by the Wool Center Chapter of the American Business Women Association and was selected in the top 25 women in the United States by the ABWA. Mrs. Schneemann also served on the committee for the promotion of the Tom Green County Junior College in 1945. The college was later established in southwest San Angelo, now known as Angelo State University. Mrs. Schneemann was past president of the Women's Club of San Angelo and past president for the Heart of Texas District for the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs. She was a member of the El Concho Study Club of Christoval and a member of the San Antonio Breakfast Club, a federated club of the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs. She was past president of Delta Phi of Phi Sigma Alpha and past president of the Permian Basin Area Assembly of Phi Sigma Alpha, where she served as president in 1980 and 1985. She was a member of the Senisa Garden Club of San Angelo and a member of the First Christian Church and a member of the Mary and Martha Class. Mrs. Schneemann was elected ``Woman of the Year'' by Delta Phi of Phi Sigma Alpha for her sorority and other various activities in the community. Mrs. Schneemann served a two-year term on the Concho Valley Council of Governments for the Aging, where she was on the evaluation and appropriation committee for the council. Mrs. Schneemann was a member of Chapter No. 10 Order of the Eastern Star of San Angelo. She loved helping children, assisting the 4-H Club boys and girls with their annual speeches. She enjoyed club work and attending the General Federation of Women's Clubs International, meeting for their charitable, altruistic and benevolent programs through volunteerism, such as ``neighbor helping neighbor ...'' to make our community, our state, our nation and the world a more desirable place to reside for ourselves and our children and future generations. This was Mrs. Schneemann's goal in life to help humanity. NELLIE NORA LINDSEY BALLINGER - Nellie Nora Lindsey, 81, of Ballinger and formerly of the New Hope community near Stamford, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Monday, April 20, 1998, in the Ballinger Memorial Hospital. Nellie was born Aug. 1, 1916, in Ellis County to John Duke and Talitha Cumi Howard Wilson. She married Arvin Hollis Lindsey on Aug. 31, 1935, in Anson. Together they farmed in the New Hope community for more than 50 years. She worked as a licensed vocational nurse at the Stamford hospital for 20 years. Arvin preceded her in death in August of 1988. She moved to Ballinger in 1995. She also was preceded in death by two sons, Kenneth and Hollis Lindsey; four brothers; and one sister. Obituaries BONNIE VERNELL STORY Bonnie Vernell Story, 73, of San Angelo died at 12:45 a.m. Monday, April 20, 1998, at Grace Presbyterian Village in Dallas. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Bonnie was born May 18, 1924, in Miles to Robert Elmo and Annie Elizabeth Curry. She attended Miles public schools and graduated from Miles High School in 1941. She attended and graduated from San Angelo Business College and began her career as a secretary, serving with the construction company, Brown & Root in San Angelo, McAlister, Okla., New Orleans and Dallas. Bonnie returned to San Angelo in 1945, and married Charles A. Story of Miles on May 25, 1946. She continued her secretarial career as the secretary for the administrator of Shannon West Texas Memorial Hospital. Bonnie was a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and throughout her life was an active member, serving the church in many capacities. She also was involved in many volunteer activities, including the Shannon Hospital Auxiliary. She was active in Santa Rita Elementary School, where she contributed to the community for many years. Bonnie was a very creative person. Her talents were expressed through a variety of artistic outlets including ceramics, mosaic tile, painting and candle-making. She left a legacy of her creation, particularly her candles, among her family and friends. Tragically, these many contributions to her family and friends were brought to an end several decades ago by the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Bonnie is survived by her husband, Charles A. Story of San Angelo; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Diana Story of Fort Worth and Mark and Betty Hardy Story of Dallas; five grandchildren, Alejandro, Arian, Elizabeth, Michelle and Anne; a sister, Geneva C. Finck of San Angelo; and a brother and sister-in-law, Elmo and Billie Curry of San Angelo. Bouse, 86, died in her home April 19, 1998, in western Tom Green County after a long illness. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, in the Mertzon Cemetery with the Rev. Mrs. Bouse was born March 7, 1912, near Ava, Mo., the daughter of Joseph Asa Johnson and Mary Elizabeth Darrow Johnson. She moved with her family to Texas in 1921 where they settled on a farm near Fort Stockton. Following graduation from high school, she completed beautician school and opened her business in Monahans, where she met John Forrest ``Red'' Bouse. They were married Sept. 1, 1940. Mrs. Bouse moved with her husband to Fort Worth where they later bought a farm near Kennedale. Together, they expanded their holdings until his death in 1971. She continued to operate their farms until 1990 when she relocated to Tom Green County, bringing her favorite companions, two dogs and two horses, with her. She and her husband built a tradition of opening their home and the farm to the children of relatives and friends, providing nurturing, guidance and shelter for those who attended college in the Fort Worth area. They had a special relationship with the sons of lifelong friends, Jackie Hardaway, who died in 1994, and Leroy Hardaway, who resides in Midland. She continued that tradition even after Mr. Bouse's death in 1971. Caring for others and her animals was her greatest pleasure in life. Mrs. Bouse was preceded in death by a half brother, Lon Johnson of Fort Stockton and a brother, Virgil Johnson of Naples, Fla. She is survived by a sister, Lela Anderson of Fort Stockton; and a brother, Noel E. Johnson of Irion County. Surviving nieces include Mary Helen Crider of Siloam Springs, Ark., Carol Phillips of Cape Corals, Fla., Noel D. Johnson of Irion County and Norman Johnson of Midland.
