A veteran of World War II, he had worked for First National Bank and was a member of Broadway Baptist Church. Joe Lara ABILENE - Joe Lara, 53, died May 1, 1998, in a local hospital. Service was Tuesday at the Broadview Baptist Church with burial in the Masonic Cemetery. Arrangements were by North's Funeral Home. He was born Sept. 12, 1944, in Robert Lee. He was a Navy veteran and worked for Pride Refinery for 16 years. In 1991, he opened the Green Valley Ranch in Abilene and owned Triple ``L'' Concrete Systems. He was a member of the Robert Lee Bethel Baptist Mission and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 15045. Kirby Moore OZONA - Kirby D. Moore, 84, died Thursday, May 7, 1998, in a a local health care center. Services are pending with Preddy Funeral Home. Obituaries HAZEL LEE Hazel Mildred Lee passed away Thursday, May 7, 1998, in Meadow Creek Nursing Center. She was 90. Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 9, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Hazel was born Dec. 17, 1907, to William and Willie Wheeler of Eola. She graduated from Eola High School, where she loved math and played a great game of basketball. Hazel married Dorval D. ``Shug'' Lee of Eden in San Angelo on May 13, 1929. They were married for 67 years until his death in March of 1996. Shug and Hazel farmed and ran livestock in the Eola-Vick-Vancourt area. Hazel was active in the Eola community and the Eola Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Billy Joe Lee and wife, Cherlain, of Vancourt; daughter, Barbara Lee Jameson and husband, Cohler, of Eola; grandson, Randy Lee of Vick; granddaughters, Sharla Denton of Eola and Brenda Jameson of Fort Worth; great-granddaughter, Jamie Lee Denton of Eola; and brother, John Bill Wheeler and wife, Helen, of Baytown. Her husband, Dorval, and a grandson, Bobby Joe Lee, preceded her in death. Hazel loved her family, her friends, her home, her land and her God. She especially liked to cook, work in her yard and ride her Honda to chop cotton. Shug and Hazel loved to fish and play 42 dominoes with friends. Visitors were treated to huge meals, and grandchildren always left her home with home-baked goodies. With her passing, the Eola community has lost one of its great cooks. Her family will always see her through Shug's eyes as that tall, beautiful girl that he fell in love with at first sight and vowed to marry. The family would like to give a special thanks to all the people at Meadow Creek Nursing Center for their loving care. Jackson and Mary Louise Davis. Mary Helen attended Baylor University and majored in music and English. She taught school at the Opp School House in Menard County. She had been a lifetime rancher in Schleicher County since 1948 and was a member of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dobs Locklin; three brothers, Edwin M. Jackson Sr., J.T. Jackson Jr. and Willie Wood Jackson; a great- grandson; and two great-granddaughters. Survivors include two daughters, Patsy Jo Bradley of Eldorado and Maggie Lew Middleton and husband, Ronnie, of Fort Collins, Colo.; a son, Curtis Stockton Jr. and wife, Jeannie, of Houston; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and Curtis Stockton Sr. Grandsons who will serve as pallbearers are Bobi Lively, Shy Lowe Middleton, Lonnie Middleton, John Kotsch, Eddie Bolm and Trey Stockton. SMITH Karen Goen Smith, 57, of San Angelo died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, in a local hospital after a brief illness. She was born Jan. 13, 1941, in Plainview. She grew up in Floydada and graduated from Baylor University in 1962. She moved to San Angelo in 1974 and lived there until her death. Karen married William O. ``Dan'' Smith on Oct. 6, 1962. She was preceded in death by one son, Daniel Darrell Smith, who died in 1985. She is survived by her husband; a son, Kyle O. Smith of Floydada and his wife, Shelly; one daughter, Jennifer Jill Smith of San Angelo; two grandchildren, Hannah Smith and Konner Smith, both of Floydada; her mother, Garnet Goen of Floydada; one brother, W. Dale Goen and his wife, Jo, of Floydada; and one sister, Claudean Malstrom and her husband, Howard, of El Paso. Karen sacrificed an early career to stay at home and raise a family. In 1984 she began teaching at Bowie Elementary and in 1986 was one of the teachers selected to open Bonham Elementary School, where she taught until her death. She was a member of the Southland Baptist Church and lived and taught from her Christian background. The family suggests memorials be sent to the Darrell Smith Youth Fund at Southland Baptist Church or to the Bonham Elementary PTA. MARGIE LOU SCOTT Margie Lou Driggers Scott, 64, of San Angelo passed away Wednesday, May 6, 1998, in a local hospital following a lengthy illness. Margie was born March 18, 1934, in Frederick, Okla. She graduated from Ralls High School in 1952. On June 15, 1962, Margie and Wayne Scott were married in Carlsbad, N.M. Margie began a 29-year career with General Telephone Co. of the Southwest as an operator in Ralls. She subsequently held various management positions with the company in Carlsbad, N.M., and Memphis, San Angelo, Baytown and Texarkana, Texas. She retired from the company as eastern area buildings manager in June 1982. Following their retirement from General Telephone Co., Margie and Wayne owned and operated Wayne Scott Communications Inc. from 1982 to 1995. In addition to her husband, Wayne, Margie is survived by her daughter, Tana Fedric and her husband, Mitch, of Bridgeport, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; her grandson, Jason Thompson; and an older brother. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at Glen Meadows Baptist Church with the Rev. Lillian was married to Leroy Butts on Dec. 25, 1937, in San Angelo. He preceded her in death in 1951. She also was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers. Survivors include her sister, Helena Kay of San Angelo. EMILY LOUISE TOWER Emily Louise (Lou) Tower died on Monday, May 4, 1998, in San Diego. Lou was born in San Angelo on April 10, 1952. After graduating from San Angelo CentralHigh School, she attended San Diego State University, graduating with a degree in accounting. She was a resident of San Diego for 28 years and was a practicing CPA at the time of her death. She was preceded in death by her father, Daniel B. Tower. JOSEPH BENJAMIN `J.B.' SWINDLE Joseph Benjamin ``J.B.'' Swindle, 78, of San Angelo died at 1:10 a.m. Friday, May 8, 1998. J.B. was born Feb. 23, 1920, in Collinsville. He was a tire salesman and a veteran of World War II and was stationed on the USS California during the Pearl Harbor attack. He worked for Ty Swindle Tire Co. until his retirement and had been a resident of San Angelo since 1949. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1815. He held many offices including District Commander. He was a volunteer for the Concho Valley Regional Food Bank for several years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eber and Edna Owens Swindle; his first wife, Avo Swindle; and his second wife, Frances Swindle. He also was preceded in death by one brother, Ty Swindle, and one sister, Nannie Lee Swindle. Family visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, May 10, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Mrs. Scott spent most of her youth in Oklahoma and North Texas. She worked as a farmer and rancher alongside her husband, Cecil C. Scott. She moved to San Angelo in 1971, after living in Junction for more than 50 years. Mrs. Scott was involved with the Masonic Lodge, serving as a Worthy Matron, and participated in the Shriners. She was a member of the Junction Methodist Church. Her husband was a charter member of the Shriners in San Angelo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil C. Scott, in 1971. He was a member of the Texas Restaurant Association in charge of Project Graduation and Taste of Abilene; he was a past president and charter member of Golden Years Retirement Club of West Texas Utilities; a Life Spike member of the National Home Builders Association; and member of Abilene Southwest Rotary Club. Herring, 69, died on Saturday, May 9, 1998, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Kenneth was born May 3, 1929, in San Angelo. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a degree in military engineering. He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a master's degree in industrial management. Other graduate work was done at Texas A&M University after his retirement from the U.S. Army in 1981. During his 30-year military career, he graduated from the Command and General Staff College and from the Army War College. His last military assignment was as Director of Policy, Supreme Allied Command Atlantic. Some of his military awards included the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Purple Hearts both from Korea and Vietnam, United Nations Service Medal, Senior Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab, Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. ROCHA Pablo C. Rocha, 72, of San Angelo died Sunday, May 10, 1998, in an area hospital. Rosary was at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, in Robert Massie Riverside Chapel. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Joe Vasquez officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Pablo was born June 18, 1925, to Rosalio and Santos Rocha. He worked in a foundry and was a Catholic. He was preceded in death by a son, Pablo Rocha Jr., and a grandson, Flavio Rocha. Survivors include his wife, Herminia Rocha; three sons, Santos Rocha and Arnold Rocha, both of San Angelo, and Rosalio Rocha of Eldorado; five daughters, Maria Elana Rocha of San Antonio, Carmela Pimentel and Margarita Pimentel, both of Del Rio, Gloria Garcia of Miles and Suky Garcia of San Marcos; one brother, Avlino Rocha of Del Rio; 27 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends who will miss him. Pallbearers will be Adrian Rocha, Jose Rocha, Enrrique Rocha, Emanuel Garcia, Eric Garcia, Michael Torres, Raul Pimentel and Omar Pimentel. RHODA MARGUERITE PARISH SPRABERRY LAMESA - Marguerite Spraberry, 84, of O'Donnell died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, in Midland after a lengthy illness. Service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at the First Baptist Church in O'Donnell with the Rev. Richard Rush, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Lamesa Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Branon Funeral Home. Rhoda Marguerite Parish was born July 9, 1913, to Judge O.L. and Lillie Parish in Ballinger. Marguerite graduated from Ballinger High School in 1930, and Hardin-Simmons University in 1933 with a degree in music. She married Carr Dennis Spraberry in Ballinger on Sept. 16, 1934. They lived in Gorman, Rising Star and Lamesa, where Carr was a math teacher and football coach, while Marguerite was a homemaker and taught music. Carr and Marguerite bought and operated Midway store, 13 miles southeast of Lamesa, from 1941 to 1948. They bought O'Donnell Implement, the International Harvester dealership in O'Donnell and moved there in 1948. Marguerite kept books for the implement company while their sons finished school there. John attended and graduated from Baylor University and David attended Hardin-Simmons and graduated from North Texas University. Marguerite taught music, a Sunday school class and played the piano and organ at the First Baptist Church and helped the Methodist church in O'Donnell for a number of years. Marguerite is remembered for the many weddings and funerals she played. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church and contributed to its music staff for many years. Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband, Carr in 1992; her sister, Lillie Esther in 1995; and her son, David Carr in 1996. She is survived by two brothers, O.L. Parish of San Angelo and William Dan Parish of Tulsa, Okla.; one sister, Charlene Christian of Vicksburg, Miss.; one son, John Parish Spraberry of Lamesa and his two children, Edward Carr Spraberry of Dallas and Stacia Ann Peterson of Lamesa; David's three children, Kenneth Carr Spraberry, Paul Greenlee Spraberry of Arlington and Donna Renee Ford of San Diego; and seven great-grandchildren. Alzheimer's is a cruel and terrible disease. Marguerite will be remembered by what she did and who she was by those who knew her and loved her. Memorials gifts may be made to a favorite charity. BRIAN ALLEN HANEY SAN ANTONIO - Brian Allen Haney, born May 11, 1973, in Phoenix, Ariz., went home to be with the Lord on May 10, 1998. Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Jan Haney and Tommy Haney; his brother, Brad Haney of San Antonio; and many friends. He graduated from the Academy of Creative Education, NEISD in 1992. Brian, an avid hunter and outdoorsman, proudly owned and operated his own landscape business, ACA Landscapes, at the time of his death. REX DODDS Rex Dodds, 79, of San Angelo died Monday, May 11, 1998, in a local hospital. Service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Dr. Dan Williams, pastor of Southland Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Mr. Dodds was born Oct. 23, 1918, to Arthur and Eula Sparks Dodds. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II. He married Modene Arnold on June 3, 1948, in Coleman. Mr. Dodds was a longtime employee of West Texas Utilities, retiring in 1983 after 30 years of service. He was a devout Christian and a member of Southland Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Modene Dodds of San Angelo; a son, Donald Rex Dodds of Austin; four sisters, Irene Bailey of Rocksprings, Nell Sackett of Abilene, Lois Kendrick of Haynesville, La., and Tommye Becker of San Marcos. Mrs. Rabb was married to Thurman T. Rabb on Oct. 18, 1929, in Houston. Mrs. Rabb was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister. Survivors include her husband,Thurman T. Rabb of San Angelo; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Dorothy Rabb of San Angelo; three grandchildren, Stephen Rabb, Mark Rabb and wife, Tracy, and Paula Rabb, all of San Angelo; and four great-grandchildren, Laura Rabb, John Henry Rabb, Andrew Rabb and Katy Rabb.
