Survivors include two sisters, Myrlene Scott of Sweetwater and Maxine Sheppard of Winters; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obituaries MARY LaVERTA SCOTT Mary LaVerta Scott, 86, of San Angelo passed away Saturday, May 30, 1998, in a local hospital. LaVerta was born Oct. 20, 1911, in Fort Stockton to Edna and Jess Moore. After LaVerta's mother passed away, LaVerta, her sister and her brothers were raised by their grandparents, Mary and Andrew Foster, on a ranch northwest of Carlsbad, N.M. She graduated from Artesia High School in Artesia, N.M. On March 19, 1932, LaVerta married Tom Scott in Carlsbad. They were married 57 years until his death in 1989. In 1992, LaVerta moved to San Angelo to be close to her sons, and she resided at Meadow Creek Nursing Center. LaVerta is survived by two sons, Thomas Scott Jr. and wife, Oneta, and Wayne Scott, all of San Angelo; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom; a daughter-in-law, Margie Lou Scott; one sister, Eula; two brothers, Clyde and Roy; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Bowden, 70, of Monahans passed away quietly in his sleep on Saturday, May 30, 1998, at his home. Bobby was born Nov. 5, 1927, in Tupelo to John and Leona Bowden. He graduated from Rice High School in 1945. He joined the Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II. He was recalled to serve during the Korean War, where he was stationed in the Philippines and was part of the battalion that built the Subie Bay Air Base. Bobby attended two years of college at Navarro Junior College in Corsicana. He married Charlene Vaughn Feb. 8, 1951, at the First United Methodist Church in Odessa. Bobby owned and operated oil field construction and earth moving businesses in Odessa and Edgewood, N.M., in the '60s and '70s. He also was an avid rancher for 40 years and grazed cattle in Central New Mexico and West Texas until his retirement in 1996. He was known for having good horses and a big dog. Bobby also was a renowned cow camp cook. Bobby was preceded in death by his parents; John and Leona Bowden; two brothers, Scott Bowden and J.R. Bowden; and one grandson, Adam Hostler. Bobby is survived by his wife, Charlene; three daughters, Luanne Hostler of Phoenix, Sue Lamm of Nashua, N.H., and Barbara Lynn Pfeiffer of San Angelo; four grandchildren, John Lamm of Nashua, Nathan and Melissa Hostler of Phoenix and Trevor Pfeiffer of San Angelo; a sister, Francis Weaver of Arlington; a brother, Jack Bowden of Grand Junction, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. WARREN Capt. Robert E. Warren, retired USAF, died at 10:45 a.m. Monday, June 1, 1998, at his residence. Military graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, in Leaday Cemetery with Capt. Steve Rogers, chaplain, of Goodfellow Air Force Base officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Robert was born Dec. 2, 1919, in Clarksville, Ark., to Hiram and Ocie Warren. He graduated from Clarksville High School and enlisted in the Army, prior to Pearl Harbor. He was sent to the Aleutian Isles, where he served for three years as a first sergeant during World War II. He transferred to the Air Force and was commissioned during the Korean War. Upon returning to Goodfellow Air Force Base from England, he was commander of the 6943rd Student Squadron until he retired from the Air Force in 1961. He was a life member of the VFW Post 1815, a member of the Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years and a Shriner for 50 years. He loved hunting and fishing. Robert was preceded in death by a 4-year-old daughter, Alice Lee; his parents; and a brother, Grant Warren. Robert is survived by his wife, Ruth, of more than 52 years of marriage; one son, Robert E. He married Sylvia Socha on Oct. 7, 1944, in Gonzales and moved to San Angelo in 1946, where he worked as a building contractor. Dad was an avid fisherman and storyteller. He was especially devoted to his four grandchildren. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Aleutian Islands, India, China and Australia. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with a Bronze Star while he was serving his country. He was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Albert Barta Jr. and Adolph Barta. Charlie is survived by his wife, Sylvia Barta of San Angelo; two children and their spouses, Mike and Carolyn Brower of Lake Jackson and Mark and Donna Barta of San Angelo; four grandchildren, Ben Brower, Marissa Brower, Brandon Barta and Lauren Barta; a sister, Maria Mikulencak of Moulton; sisters-in-law, Mary Barta of Gonzales and Beth Barta of Kermit; and many nieces and nephews. LEONA CHINN Leona Chinn of San Angelo passed away Tuesday, June 2, 1998, in Baptist Memorials Nursing Home. She was 87. She was born in 1910 in Campbell, Mo., to William and Pearl Patterson. She married Willard Chinn in 1952 and moved to Santa Clara, Calif., where she worked for Southern Pacific Railroad for 24 years. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977. She moved to San Angelo in 1985 to be near her brother, the late John M. ``Pat'' Patterson and his wife, Jeanelle. She was an avid reader and was active in the Newtimers. She is survived by her sister-in-law of San Angelo; a brother, Bob Patterson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; nieces, Suzanne Franklin of Lubbock and Kathleen Louttit of Ramsey, N.J.; and numerous nieces and nephews. In her work Dorothy touched the lives of many patients and their families through her compassion, kindness and loving smile. Family was very important to her, and her children and grandchildren brought her much love and joy. Dorothy loved to read and especially loved spending her summer vacations in South Fork, Colo. As a veteran, he served in the 1043 Marine Battalion in 1943; the Army 44 Field Artillery, Fort Hood; the Army Air Corps in 1947 as a sergeant responsible for reopening Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo; as a first sergeant with the Second Armored Division serving in Korea. He was discharged in February 1953 as a master sergeant. Joe was responsible for beginning training for inhalation therapy in the Concho Valley as owner of San Angelo Welder's Supply. He was a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge No. 1260 from 1948. He served as deacon at First Baptist Church of San Angelo from 1957 and was instrumental in the building of the church's Nasworthy Recreation Center. ``Big Joe'' helped mold the lives of many young men through his active leadership of the Royal Ambassadors both at First Baptist Church and throughout the area conclave. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. She was born Oct. 22, 1921, in Gallup, N.M. She was a homemaker and a Catholic. Finis Bryan Finis White Bryan, 93, of San Angelo died Saturday, June 6, 1998, in a local nursing home. Service will be at 2 p.m. today in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Maria Castillo Maria de Jesus Zuniga Castillo, 83, of San Angelo died Friday, June 5, 1998, in a local hospital. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. today in Fairmount Cemetery with the Rev. There are no known survivors. Beulah Lee KERRVILLE - Beulah E. Lee, 93, died Saturday, June 6, 1998, in a local hospital. She had been a cook for Hilltop Village Nursing Home for 10 years and was a member of Sunset Baptist Church in Mountain Home. Survivors include her husband, Archie A. Services are pending at Kerbow Funeral Home. Obituaries DOROTHY JO SMITH Dorothy Jo Smith passed away Saturday morning, June 6, 1998, at her home. Service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 9, at Johnson's Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Tallas officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Dorothy was born Aug. 6, 1932, in Amarillo to Aubrey and Estelle Haynie. She lived with her family in Dallas until her junior year in high school when the family moved to San Angelo. Dorothy graduated from San Angelo High School and attended San Angelo Junior College. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Dorothy was a homemaker and devoted mother, staying at home raising her children and being involved in their activities. In 1962, she began working for Dr. H.M. Anderson and worked for him for 28 years, until his retirement. The past nine years, she had been the office manager for Dr. James Womack. In her work, Dorothy touched the lives of many patients and their families through her compassion, kindness and loving smile. Family was very important to her, and her children and grandchildren brought her much love and joy. Dorothy loved to read and especially loved spending her summer vacations in South Fork, Colo. Dorothy is survived by her son, Tommy Smith and wife, Joyce, of Grand Prairie; daughter, Kathy Drennan and husband, Royce, of Oklahoma City; son, Billy Lee Smith and wife, Sandi, of San Angelo; daughter, Donna Massey and husband, Lynn, of San Angelo; and nine grandchildren, Zane Smith, Cole Smith, Jenny Smith, Samantha Smith, Russell Massey and Brendon Massey, all of San Angelo, Jandi Drennan Bieler and husband, Mike, and Alisia Drennan and Katie Drennan, all of Oklahoma City. Dorothy was lovingly referred to by her grandchildren as ``Dori'' and ``GrandMerry.'' She also is survived by her sisters, Jean Eady and Vickie Ray, and brother, Lee Haynie and wife, Wilma, all of San Angelo. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents. Dorothy will be missed, but her beautiful spirit will live on in her loved ones. Pallbearers will be Joe Eady, Monti Eady, Mark Ray, Chad Ray, Robert Haynie, Jarrett Lange and Danny Scott. JOSEPH HOWARD HUFFMAN Joseph Howard Huffman, 70, died Friday, June 5, 1998, at his residence. Service will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Military and Masonic graveside service will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Joe was born Nov. 29, 1927, in Sikeston, Mo., to Joseph Ernest and Alice Rose Story Huffman. He married Alma Werner on Sept. 4, 1948, in Paint Rock. As a veteran, he served in the 1043 Marine Battalion in 1943; the Army 44 Field Artillery, Fort Hood; the Army Air Corps in 1947 as a sergeant responsible for reopening Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo; and as a first sergeant with the Second Armored Division serving in Korea. He was discharged in February 1953 as a master sergeant. Joe was responsible for beginning training for inhalation therapy in the Concho Valley as owner of San Angelo Welder's Supply. He was a member of Masonic Blue Lodge No. 1260 from 1948. He served as deacon at First Baptist Church of San Angelo from 1957 and was instrumental in the building of the church's Nasworthy Recreation Center. ``Big Joe'' helped mold the lives of many young men through his active leadership of the Royal Ambassadors both at First Baptist Church and throughout the area conclave. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Loren Suver, Guy Suver and Virgil Suver; one sister, Dorothy Adkison White; nephew, Bobby Adkison; and niece, Virginia Shearrer.
