She was born Jan. 13, 1930, in Water Valley. She was employed in San Angelo by GTE before moving out of state and was executive director of Consumer Credit Counseling Service and administrative assistant for Wyoming Credit Union League in Casper, Wyo. Survivors include her husband, George H. Temple; a son, and daughter-in-law, Vance and Dorothy Temple of Flower Mound; daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Ray Boyle of San Angelo; three grandchildren, Nicole Allen, Robyn Boyle and Bryan Boyle; one brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Verlaine Bright of Seguin; and several nieces and nephews. THOMAS `TOM' PONDER EARLY - Thomas ``Tom'' Ponder, 51, died Saturday, June 27, 1998, in a Brownwood hospital. Arrangements are by Heartland Funeral Home. Mr. Ponder was born March 27, 1947, in Fort Worth and had lived in the Brownwood and Early areas since 1963. He married Beverly Reve Lynn on June 1, 1968, in Brownwood. He was a teacher at Early High School where he taught computer and business classes. He was very active in the Boy Scouts of America program and had been a leader in the Order of the Arrow. He also was a member of the Texas State Teachers Association and the Texas Computer Teachers Association, as well as the Texas Parks & Wildlife and the Marketing Educators of Texas. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Blair Arlan and Saterra Linn Ponder of Fort Worth; one daughter, Eva Maria Rodriquez of Spain; two brothers, Wayne Ponder of Watauga and Jim Ponder of Orlando, Fla.; one sister, Vickie Martin of Saginaw; and one foster son, Jim Self of Abilene. He was preceded in death by his wife, Reve Lynn Ponder; father, Leo Ponder; and mother, Mae Satterfield. HELEN CHAPMAN FOSTER Mrs. Helen Chapman Foster, 88, of San Angelo passed away Monday, June 29, 1998, at Baptist Memorials Center in San Angelo. Helen was born May 18, 1910, in Ozona and had been a resident of San Angelo since 1971. Helen was the daughter of Jim Chapman, one of the pioneer families of Crockett County. Mrs. Foster's sisters were Mrs. Ralph Watson, Mrs. Bertha Cox, Mrs. Alma Roach of Ozona; Mrs. Winnie Walker and Mrs. Catherine Kidd of San Angelo. Helen's brothers were Son Chapman, Bud Chapman, Joe Chapman, Ted Chapman and Bill Chapman of Ozona. Mrs. Foster was a graduate of Sul Ross University, where she met her husband of 56 years, William Paul Foster. Mrs. Foster was a teacher in Texon and Lovington, N.M., and a Daughter of the American Revolution. Survivors include her son, Mike Paul Foster, and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Sherry Foster of Tampa, Fla. HARRY E. LEE Harry E. Lee, 80, of San Angelo died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, in a Bronte nursing home. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens, officiated by the Rev. He was a retired truck driver for Southwestern Salt Supply. Harry married Louise Schuldt in 1977. He was a member of the Christian Renewal Center Church. RYEBURN `BULL' CRAWFORD Ryeburn ``Bull'' Crawford, 85, went to be in heaven with his son ``Andy'' on Tuesday, June 30, 1998. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 2, in Fairmount Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Bill Barkley, associate pastor of Southland Baptist Church, and Brother Glen Edward. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Bull was born on July 31, 1912, in Shelby County to M.H. and Flossie Crawford. He married Evelyn Kilpatrick on Oct. 8, 1933, and they were each other's soulmates for 64« years. He devoted his whole life to his family, his work and his church. He worked in the wool and mohair business for more than 60 years, beginning for the Stockman's Supply in San Angelo. In 1942, he enlisted in the Seabees during World War II and was in San Francisco for more than three years. When he returned, he worked for J.M. Lee Wool Warehouse. In 1949, he accepted a job in Mertzon as manager and secretary- treasurer for West Texas Wool & Mohair. He retired from there in 1978. Bull was then associated with Ballinger Wool & Mohair until he retired in January 1997 because of poor health. He served as mayor and school board president while in Mertzon. He also served as director of the Sheep & Goat Raisers Association and as president of the Wool & Warehousemen's Association. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn ``Eve'' Crawford; and a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Terry Langford. He also is survived by his three grandsons who were the joy of his life, Nicholas Christian Langford of Dallas and Marshall Andrew Crawford and Zachary Ryan Crawford, both of San Angelo; two sisters, Maxine Stephens of San Angelo and Ruby McKenzie of Odessa; a brother-in-law and his wife, L.L. and Janie Kilpatrick; and several nieces and nephews. Bull was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.H. Crawford; his brother, Vernon Crawford; and one sister, Carmen McNeil. He also lost his son, Patrick Andrew ``Andy'' Crawford, at age 15 in 1955. The family greatly appreciates their Christian friends, Southland Baptist Church, where they were members for almost 20 years, and the Friendship Class for all their calls, prayers and visits. Last but not least, they want to remember their Daddy's two best friends, Nubbin, a toy white poodle that lived to be 16, and Prisy, his chocolate toy poodle. CECIL L. EISENBACH SR. Cecil L. Eisenbach Sr. went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 29, 1998. Cecil was born to William C. and Amanda M. Eisenbach on June 19, 1927, in Paige. Cecil moved to San Angelo with his family when he was a young child. He married Helen McPeek on Oct. 25, 1950, in San Angelo. He served in the Navy in World War II. Cecil started his own business with his brother, Oscar, in 1947. The business began as Eisenbach Brothers Motor Co. It was one of the pioneer used- car dealerships in San Angelo. Although semi-retired, he still enjoyed spending his days at the car lot visiting with customers and selling cars. He enjoyed spending his spare time working on his ranch and hunting and fishing. He took special delight in the hours spent playing his guitar. Cecil was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife, Helen; his children and grandchildren, Larry and Laura Eisenbach, Jennifer, Mandie and Chris, Mike and Sharon Honea, Christy and Jon;and Lawrence Eisenbach and Angie. He also is survived by three siblings, Clyde Eisenbach, A.E. Eisenbach and Gladys Englert. Cecil was a member of Harris Avenue Baptist Church. He was a loving husband and father and a wonderful friend. Service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bryan Ross and the Rev. Farmer went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at 7:50 a.m. after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 17, 1925, in Graham to Jesse C. and Bettie A. Farmer. He received a Purple Heart in World War II while serving with the Army. He was preceded in death by Dorthory Farmer. He married Lois Davis McGinley on March 22, 1968. GEORGE IRVIN NEEL George Irvin Neel, 83, of San Angelo went to be with the Lord on July 4, 1998. George was born in Gustine in 1914. He moved to Big Spring, where he graduated from Big Spring High School. George worked for Big Spring State Bank. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a physical training instructor. After the war he moved to San Angelo. He worked for the Texas Employment Commission for 32 years and retired in 1977. Mr. Neel was a member of Park Heights Baptist Church and the Civitan organization. George was a caring and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be deeply missed. BRADY - James Archibald LaRoche Sr., 78, of Brady passed away Thursday, July 2, 1998, in the Veterans Administration Nursing Center No. 2 in Kerrville from Alzheimer's. Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 6, in the Leatherwood Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery. James was born July 4, 1919, to Frank M. and Kitty May Livingston LaRoche, a Catholic family, in Port Isabel. He graduated from high school there. He enlisted in the U.S. Army June 13, 1942, in San Antonio. He served at Guadalcanal: Asiatic- Pacific Theater and South Pacific during World War II as a sergeant field artillery anti-aircraft gunner. Injured, he was discharged with several honors in Fort Sill, Okla., Oct. 29, 1945. He married Dorothy Leanna Rutledge on April 7, 1945, in Wichita, Kan. To this union was born four boys and one girl. He converted to the Protestant church in the early 1950s and was ordained to the gospel ministry in the First Baptist Church of Port Isabel on Aug. 2, 1957. His first five years of ministry were spent preaching in Spanish in the Mexican mission field in southwest Texas and New Mexico. He served several Baptist churches in Texas. Dorothy passed away May 21, 1978, in Port Lavaca. James married Lora Lou McDonald April 19, 1980, at the First Christian Church in Brady. They lived in Port Lavaca during their first year of marriage. He retired from Francitas Baptist Church in March 1981. He was injured at Brown & Root Union Carbide Plant in Seadrift on Sept. 22, 1980, and retired as maintenance superintendent after 10 years. They moved to Brady in April 1981, where Lora Lou had lived for 33 years. He transferred his membership to the First Christian Church of Brady on Dec. 4, 1983. He preached at Eldorado Christian Church for 18 months. Retiring again, they moved back to Brady in November 1989, after living in San Angelo. Survivors include his wife, Lora Lou McDonald LaRoche of Brady; four sons, James A. LaRoche Jr. and wife, Yolanda, of Del Rio, William F.A. LaRoche and wife, Judy, of New Orleans, Charles Patrick LaRoche and wife, Judy, of Damon and Terry Duane LaRoche and wife, Debbie, of Pflugerville; a daughter, Chyril Ann Case and husband, Tim, of Conroe; eight grandsons; three granddaughters; and one great-grandson; one sister, Frances Pechacek and husband, A.A., of Port Isabel; six brothers, William LaRoche, Joseph LaRoche and Fred LaRoche, all of Texas, Robert LaRoche of Wichita, Kan., Constance LaRoche of Tulsa, Okla., and Harlan G. JAMES R. `BUBBA' DUNCAN James R. ``Bubba'' Duncan passed away in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 4, 1998. His final days were as he preferred, at home with his family. He was born to C.A. Duncan Sr. and Nelle Maloney Duncan on Aug. 20, 1935, in San Angelo. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, C.A. Duncan Jr.; and his sister, Janelle Duncan McMahon. He was a 1953 graduate of San Angelo Central High School. He attended Stanford University and graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1957. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity while at SMU. Duncan was one of the leading modern real estate developers in San Angelo, were he was responsible for the expansion of much of the southwest part of the city, including many sections of the College Hills South and College Hills West subdivisions. He developed the first subdivisions in San Angelo with underground utilities and paved alleys. He also was one of the developers of Southland Park and The Bluffs in west San Angelo. Duncan was president of City Savings & Loan from 1965 until he sold the association in 1980. Duncan remained active in real estate development and investments with his longtime partner, E. Hal Dickson of San Angelo, until his death. Duncan also was involved in numerous other businesses including the Russell, Duncan & Abbot Insurance Agency, Handy Packing Co., and HTC Industries Inc. Since selling City Savings in 1980, Duncan remained active in the savings and loan industry as a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of Farm & Home Savings, then headquartered in Nevada, Mo., and one of the largest savings associations in the United States. In addition, he was active in the development of subdivisions totaling several thousand lots in the Dallas area as well as commercial development and build-to-suit projects throughout the country. In 1985, Duncan was recognized by the San Angelo Standard-Times as one of the five most influential people in San Angelo. He had been involved in numerous charitable and civic organizations, including the Airport Advisory Board, San Angelo Industries Inc., Rio Concho Manor and others. He preferred to work quietly and tirelessly behind the scenes to improve the city that he cared for so much. Duncan was a quiet, thoughtful and gracious man, always willing to share his knowledge and experience with those who sought his advice. He insisted on doing things the right way; quality and integrity were paramount to him. His reputation and his word were his most valuable assets. Besides his work, he was most proud of his family. Few of his characteristics fit his nickname except his love of country music and particularly Willie Nelson's music. He was proud of the fact that he was a charter member of Willie's Pedernales Country Club. He is survived by his wife, Virginia ``Ginger'' Harkrider Duncan; two sons, James A. Duncan of Austin and Phillip W. His final days were as he preferred, at home with his family. He was born to C.A. Duncan Sr. and Nelle Maloney Duncan on Aug. 20, 1935, in San Angelo. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, C.A. Duncan Jr.; and his sister, Janelle Duncan McMahon. He was a 1953 graduate of San Angelo Central High School. He attended Stanford University and graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1957. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity while at SMU. Duncan was one of the leading modern real-estate developers in San Angelo, were he was responsible for the expansion of much of the southwest part of the city, including many sections of the College Hills South and College Hills West subdivisions. He developed the first subdivisions in San Angelo with underground utilities and paved alleys. He also was one of the developers of Southland Park and The Bluffs in west San Angelo. Duncan was president of City Savings & Loan from 1965 until he sold the association in 1980. Duncan remained active in real-estate development and investments with his longtime partner, E. Hal Dickson of San Angelo, until his death. Duncan also was involved in numerous other businesses, including the Russell, Duncan & Abbot Insurance Agency, Handy Packing Co., and HTC Industries Inc. Since selling City Savings in 1980, Duncan remained active in the savings-and-loan industry as a member of the board of directors and executive committee of Farm & Home Savings, then headquartered in Nevada, Mo., and one of the largest savings associations in the United States. In addition, he was active in the development of subdivisions totaling several thousand lots in the Dallas area as well as commercial development and build-to-suit projects throughout the country. In 1985, Duncan was recognized by the San Angelo Standard-Times as one of the five most influential people in San Angelo. He had been involved in numerous charitable and civic organizations, including the Airport Advisory Board, San Angelo Industries Inc., Rio Concho Manor and others. He preferred to work quietly and tirelessly behind the scenes to improve the city that he cared for so much. Duncan was a quiet, thoughtful and gracious man, always willing to share his knowledge and experience with those who sought his advice. He insisted on doing things the right way; quality and integrity were paramount to him. His reputation and his word were his most valuable assets. Besides his work, he was most proud of his family. Few of his characteristics fit his nickname except his love of country music and particularly Willie Nelson's music. He was proud of the fact that he was a charter member of Willie's Pedernales Country Club. He is survived by his wife, Virginia ``Ginger'' Harkrider Duncan; two sons, James A. Duncan of Austin and Phillip W. Duncan of Dallas; a daughter-in-law, Laurie Duncan of Dallas; and two granddaughters, Leah Kristine Duncan and Kara Nicole Duncan of Dallas; as well as several nieces and nephews. ARVILLE MARCUS `MUTT' JOHNSON AUSTIN - Arville Marcus ``Mutt'' Johnson passed away on July 4, 1998, after a lengthy illness in San Angelo. Arville was born in Princeton to Etta Opal and Mabern Johnson. One of four sons, Arville and his brothers picked cotton in the summer. In 1937 he graduated from Garrett High School. A born-again Christian, Arville was baptized at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Ennis. In 1941,Arville married Josephine White Perkins of Ennis and began working for Southern Pacific Railroad. He left Texas in 1944 to enter the Army, where he became a sergeant and served in the South Pacific in World War II. After the war, Arville and Josephine ultimately settled in Austin, where they and their four daughters were members of Allendale Baptist Church. They first retired to Canyon Lake, then, in 1989, re-retired to San Angelo, where they lived at the Baptist Memorials retirement center. For more than 40 years Arville enjoyed a distinguished career with the Southern Pacific Railroad, most of that time as a locomotive engineer. He was awarded Top Hand Honors in 1968. He loved fishing, hunting, growing roses and Ford automobiles. Arville was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, Aubry and Lloyd Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Josephine Johnson; and a brother, Gerald ``Tub'' Johnson. He is survived by one daughter, Shirley Lee Robison and her husband, Charles Robison, of San Angelo; two grandchildren, Lee Hood and her husband, Michael, of Carlsbad, N.M., and Chuck Robison of Trophy Club; and four great-grandchildren, Jonathon and Katie Hood and Scott and D. Shaw Robison. Dr. Walker had a long and illustrious medical career as a general practitioner, serving his patients for a span of more than 60 years. He was very active in community affairs, including a term as mayor. He recently was presented a 70-year pin of service by the Masonic Lodge. His love of sports was exemplified in his years as the Grandfield High School team physician. He also established the Dr. Ralph Walker Sportsmanship Award presented annually. Over the years, Dr. Walker had been recognized many times and in many ways for his service to his profession, his community and his fellow men. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Grandfield, the First Christian Church of San Angelo or the San Angelo Symphony Society. ELVA HAVLAK DALLAS - Elva Havlak, 83, passed away Sunday, July 5, 1998, at her residence. Elva was born March 3, 1915, in Rowena to Mary Mazur and Frank Havlak. Ms. Havlak was employed with Haggar Slacks for 35 years and also was a volunteer for the priests at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church for 17 years. Elva and her two sisters served in the Army/Air Force. Elva had resided in Dallas for 51 years. She is survived by five sisters, Julie Havlak, Emily Bernardo, Mary Germany, Barbara Wanoreck and Annie Braden; one brother, Frank Havlak; and numerous nieces and nephews. A rosary was said Tuesday, July 7, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Father Juan Cruz officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Hill Cemetery. The family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 8900 Carpenter Freeway, Dallas, TX 76247. Pallbearers will be Brian Bernardo, Craig Bernardo, Xavier Valdez, Tom Braden, Dick Braden and Harry Braden. Honorary pallbearers will be James Wanoreck and Bobby Wanorek. ALFRED LYNN HAGAN Alfred Lynn Hagan, 80, of San Angelo died at 2:35 p.m. Monday, July 6, 1998, in a local hospital. Al was born Sept. 14, 1917, in Belton. He was retired fromthe U.S. Air Force and had lived in San Angelo for 50 years. Survivors include his wife, Kay Hagan of San Angelo; two daughters, Diana Mullenix and her husband, Jerry, of San Angelo and Frances ``Skeeter'' Taylor of Austin; four granddaughters, Pam Baldridge and Michelle Taylor, both of Austin, and Tara Mitchell and Danielle Mullenix, both of San Angelo; two great-grandsons, Jacob Lawrence and Caleb Baldridge, both of Austin; one great-granddaughter, Corrina Mitchell of San Angelo; and one sister, Frances Honea, and one nephew, James Honea, both of San Angelo. Al also is survived by four stepchildren, David Horner, Ronnie Horner, Kathie Lykins and Karen Koch; 10 stepgrandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with the Rev. D.D. McAnally, pastor of Grace Covenant Church, officiating.
