Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 9, at the Eden Church of Christ with burial in Eden Cemetery officiated by Chris Chant. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Mr. Cupps was born April 15, 1913, on the Maloy Ranch in Concho County. He married Daisy Bell Cupps on Nov. 2, 1941. She preceded him in death on March 18, 1990. He also was preceded in death by his parents, Soloman McCarty Cupps and Mary Adella Cupps; and three brothers, Harvey, Emmett and Toyah Cupps. He was a mechanic. Survivors include two sisters-in-law and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Pallbearers will be Cody L. ROB POPE Rob Pope, 90, of Miles passed away at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 1998, in Baptist Memorials Hospital. Rob was born on Oct. 15, 1907, in Whitney to Benjamin and Ollie Pope. He came to Miles at age 15. Rob spent his whole life after that engaged in agriculture. In December of 1934, he married Claudia Lummus in San Angelo. She preceded him in death Sept. 16, 1996. They had always made their home in Miles. Rob was a stock farmer until he retired a few years ago. Rob was a Baptist, having joined the Ray Baptist Church at an early age. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters, being the last survivor of his immediate family. Rob is survived by a loving daughter, Robbie Pope Kinslow and husband, Larry, of San Angelo; two grandchildren, Allison Kinslow Tonne and husband, Paul, of San Angelo and Whitney Rob Kinslow and wife, Juli, of Georgetown. He also is survived by three great-grandsons, Bradley Tonne of San Angelo and Sutton and Hayden Kinslow of Georgetown; as well as several nephews, nieces and sisters-in-law. Rob was born on Oct. 15, 1907, in Whitney to Benjamin and Ollie Pope. He came to Miles at age 15. Rob spent his whole life after that engaged in agriculture. In December of 1934, he married Claudia Lummus in San Angelo. She preceded him in death Sept. 16, 1996. They had always made their home in Miles. Rob was a stock farmer until he retired a few years ago. Rob was a Baptist, having joined the Miles Baptist Church at an early age. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters, being the last survivor of his immediate family. Rob is survived by a loving daughter, Robbie Pope Kinslow and husband, Larry, of San Angelo; and two grandchildren, Allison Kinslow Tonne and husband, Paul, of San Angelo, and Whitney Rob Kinslow and wife, Juli, of Georgetown. He also is survived by three great-grandsons, Bradley Tonne of San Angelo and Sutton and Hayden Kinslow of Georgetown; as well as several nephews, nieces and sisters-in-law. Following military service at Fort Bliss and overseas, he married Lila Johnson of Kansas City, Mo., on Aug. 17, 1956. He was employed by El Paso Natural Gas for 11 years. In 1994, he retired as vice president of Comet Industries in Kansas City after 27 years and moved to the Rio Grande Valley. As a hobby, he enjoyed collecting antiques. He was born in Waxahachie on Nov. 5, 1911, the son of James Samuel and Lura Mae Lancaster Clark. He was preceded in death by his wife, Johnny Jean Forgason Clark, 85, who died in an automobile accident in Houston on Friday, May 22, 1998. Born Jan. 13, 1913, in Wharton, she was the daughter of Herbert Grayson and Nona Burtner Forgason. They are survived by their three children, George D. Clark Jr. and his wife, Kay Barnett, of Nashville, Tenn., Lucy Clark of Woody, Calif., and Jean Clark of Mariposa, Calif. His sister, Katherine Jordan of Knoxville, Tenn., and her sister and brother-in-law, Lucy and H. Charles Kriegel, and her brother and sister-in-law, Herb and Helyn Forgason of Houston also survive them. They also are survived by two grandchildren, George Daniel Clark and wife, Nissa, and Elisabeth Jean Clark Poe and husband, Marty, of Nashville; a great- granddaughter, Morgan Clark, and a great-grandson, Marty Poe IV; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. George graduated from Trinity University in 1932 and was a lifetime member and the second president of the Trinity Alumni Association. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and retired from the Naval Reserves as a lieutenant commander. He worked for 40 years with the Social Security Administration and retired as a district manager. He was an active Rotarian for 40 years. Johnny Jean graduated from Trinity University in 1933 and was a lifetime member of the Trinity Alumni Association. She retired after 20 years of teaching in elementary schools in Texas cities and was an active member of PEO Chapter D.F. They were active members of St. Luke's Presbyterian Church in Houston. Daddy enjoyed Dixieland Jazz and collected wonderful books on Texas and Southern history. He loved his family and cared for us well. At 85, Mom was intellectually curious, loved people and was, above all else, positive in her approach to life. They were loved by many. His children invite their parents' friends to his memorial service at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 14, at Bayou Manor, 4141 S. Braeswood Blvd. in Houston. Earline Rumsey TEMPLE - Earline McFall Rumsey, 73, died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at her residence. Service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home with burial in Bellwood Memorial Park. She was born April 3, 1925, in Mertzon. She had taught school in Water Valley, Eldorado, Pecos, Imperial and Big Lake and was a librarian in Kerrville, retiring in 1984. Survivors include her husband, Lloyd Rumsey of Temple; a daughter, Jan Wimmer of Richardson; a son, Louis Rumsey of Carrollton; a sister, Jessie Sawyer of New Braunfels; and four grandchildren. Ollie Whiteley BRADY - Ollie Jane Whiteley, 87, died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, in a local nursing home. Service will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Leatherwood Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery. She was born Jan. 10, 1911, in Gorman. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Voca Quilting Club and the Central Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Ed Whiteley of Brady; two brothers, Jim Burns of Refugio and Marshall Burns of San Antonio; a sister, Evelyn Mathisen of Corpus Christi; two grandchildren; and three great- grandchildren. Russell Westendorf CEDAR FALLS, IOWA - Russell James Westendorf, 28, died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, near San Angelo. Service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Heights Baptist Church with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home. He was born June 29, 1970, in Waterloo, Iowa. He served in the Air Force from 1988 to 1998, where he had been a member of the 316th Training Squadron. Services are pending at Foster and Brown Funeral Home with local arrangements pending at Grimes Funeral Chapels. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obituaries BOBBIE LEE JENKINS Bobbie Lee Jenkins, 80, of San Angelo passed away Monday, July 13, 1998, in a local hospital. Bobbie was born on Sept. 17, 1917, in Parsons, Kan., to Frank W. and Orah Lee Rawls. After a brief residence in Glen Rose, her family moved to Christoval where she graduated from Christoval High School in 1935. She attended John Tarleton College and graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in 1940. Early in her teaching career she taught in Brady and San Angelo. While teaching in San Angelo, she met her husband, Norman Jenkins. They were married on Dec. 23, 1942, in Los Angeles, while he was serving in the Air Force. After schooling in San Antonio and St. Louis, Mo., they returned to Christoval in 1948 to join her father in the operation of the Rawls Bath House. In 1952, Bobbie was asked to substitute teach in the Christoval schools until a teacher could be found. That substitute position lasted for 28 years until her retirement in 1980. While teaching in Christoval she was a lifetime member of the PTA, TSTA and NEA. She was Teacher of the Year in Christoval in 1972. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. During her teaching career of 33 years, she touched the lives of many children, many of whom visited her on a regular basis. Bobbie was a member of the Christoval First United Methodist Church and a charter member of Oda Lee Keys' Ladies Sunday school class. In 1995, Bobbie and Norman moved to San Angelo. While in San Angelo, Bobbie moved her church membership to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where she received the love and friendship of many church members. Bobbie was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend. Her continual humor and zest for life even in failing health will be missed by all who knew her. Bobbie was preceded in death by husband, Norman Jenkins; her parents; and a sister, Evelyn Rawls. She is survived by a loving son, Norman Ray Jenkins and his wife, Sandy, of San Angelo; a grandson, Jason Ray Jenkins of Denton; one brother, Bill Rawls and wife, Anna, of Christoval; and one sister, Ginger Wilkerson and her husband, Jack, of Arroyo Grande, Calif. She also is survived by a brother-in- law, Raymond Jenkins and his wife, Ruth, of Midland; sisters-in-law, Vi Jenkins and Wanda Jenkins, both of San Angelo; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside service will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 16, in the Christoval Cemetery with the Rev. Buddy Trull, minister of the First Baptist Church of Christoval, officiating. KATHY APPLETON RIDDLE Kathy Appleton Riddle, 43, of San Angelo died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at her residence. Service will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 17, at Park Heights Baptist Church with Dr. James Miller officiating. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Hobbs, N.M., with Dean Mathis, pastor of Taylor Memorial Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Kathy was born March 21, 1955, to Boyce and Reta Appleton in Hobbs, N.M. Her father preceded her in death. Kathy lived most of her life in Hobbs. She graduated from Hobbs High School, attended New Mexico Junior College and Wayland Baptist University. Kathy married Randy Riddle on Aug. 31, 1985, in Hobbs. They moved to San Angelo in 1989. She was a homemaker and a member of Park Heights Baptist Church. She also was preceded in death by one brother, Wilson Rocky Appleton in 1992. Kathy is survived by her husband, Randy Riddle of San Angelo; her mother, Reta M. Appleton of Hobbs; one brother, Terry Appleton of Hobbs; three sisters, Becky A. Rood and Melanie A. Gallagher, both of El Paso, and Marty A. Patterson of Beckville; and four nieces and nephews. One of Kathy's favorite sayings for her family and friends was, ``In my Father's house there are many mansions. I hope yours is next to mine.'' JEWELL ROBERTA BECKHAM KERMIT - Funeral service for Jewell Roberta Beckham, 85, longtime Winkler County resident, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 18, 1998, at the First United Methodist Church. Dr. Bervin Caswell of Abilene, retired Methodist minister, will officiate. Burial will be in the family cemetery on the Beckham Ranch in northwestern Winkler County. Mrs. Beckham died early Wednesday, July 15, in Abilene, where she had resided for the past 16 months. A member of two pioneer West Texas ranching families, she was born June 27, 1912, in Thomaston, the daughter of J.C. ``Joe'' and Mary Roberta Hollebeke. She moved to Pecos at an early age and was graduated from Pecos High School in 1930. She attended Sul Ross State University at Alpine. She and William Ernest ``Dump'' Beckham were married June 1, 1932, in Loving, N.M. He preceded her in death May 11, 1952. She moved with her husband to the Beckham Ranch southwest of Jal, N.M., and they lived there until they started a farming operation in Reeves County, south of Pecos in the early 1940s. In 1948, they sold the farm and purchased a ranch in Mills County near Goldthwaite. They sold the Mills County ranch in 1951 and moved back to the Beckham Ranch near Winkler County, where she continued to live until February 1997, when she suffered a stroke and was moved to Abilene to be near her daughter, Nell Young. She had been a resident of Winkler County for 46 years. During this time, she was a rancher and homemaker and also owned a gift shop in Kermit. Mrs. Beckham was a member of First United Methodist of Kermit, Kermit Garden Club and the Winkler County Historical Commission. Survivors include one son, Bill Beckham of Wink; one daughter, Nell Young of Abilene; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandson, William Ernest ``Billy'' Beckham in 1990. Pallbearers will be John Walton, Gene Haley, Larry Fernandez, Rex Pigmon, Bill Mitchell and James Waddell. Arrangements are by Cooper Funeral Chapel. LAVERA H. COX WOOD formerly of San Angelo died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, in Weatherford. Born Jan. 18, 1919, in Sidney, Texas, she was a resident of San Angelo from 1945 to earlier this year. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 17, 1998, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel in San Angelo. The service will be officiated by Stanley Lockhart, retired minister of the Johnson Street Church of Christ. Her body was donated to science. LaVera was married to Dr. David A. Wood in 1945. She was the daughter of Ottie Scott and Gladys Olene McCarty Cox of Sidney in Comanche County. David and LaVera had one daughter, Suzanne Cox Wood Collins. LaVera and Dr. Wood were married for 50 years. LaVera was active in civic affairs. She was president of the John Brick chapter, Colonial Dames XVIIC and had served as state president of the society. She also held office in Daughters of the American Revolution, San Angelo Garden Club and San Angelo Dental Auxiliary. Survivors include her daughter, Suzanne Collins and husband, Charles, of Weatherford; brother, Loel Dene Cox and wife, Sara Lou, of Comanche; and her stepmother, Mrs. O.S. Cox of Brownwood. She also is survived by two nephews and a number of cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. David A. Wood; her parents; and one sister.
