NAT C. BETTIS JR. Nat C. Bettis Jr., 78, of San Angelo, died Thursday, July 16, 1998, in Shannon Medical Center. Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 18, in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Ronnie Laughlin, director of education/administration of the church. He will be assisted by Dr. Jerold McBride, Music Minister Mark Moeller and longtime personal friend, the Rev. Doyle Lumpkin. Dr. Bettis was a member of that church since August 1988. Burial will be in Belvedere Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Nat C. Bettis Jr. was born Oct. 25, 1919, to Nat C. and Ola Meador Bettis at 921 West Third Street in Little Rock, Ark. After his mother's death when he was 9 months old, he was reared by a paternal aunt and his paternal grandparents, Robert T. and Anna Eliza Haltom Bettis on a farm nearby or in the town of Donaldson, Ark. He accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and Lord in 1934 and was baptized by Pastor Calvin B. Waller when he joined the Second Baptist Church of Little Rock in June 28, 1936. He attended Donaldson Public School through grade 10 and graduated from the Little Rock Senior High School on May 28, 1937. He served two years (7/37-7/39) in the Civilian Conservation Corps Company 3794 and attended part time at Arkansas A&M College at Monticello. While there, he surrendered to the Baptist ministry and was licensed to ``preach the gospel'' by the First Baptist Church of Monticello, Dr. T.W. Croxton, pastor, on March 12, 1939. After completing his CCC enrollment he transferred to Baylor University in Waco to continue his ministerial education preparation. He was called to pastor Angus Baptist Church in Corsicana in the fall of 1941, and was ordained to the Southern Baptist ministry on Dec. 14, 1941, by Highland Baptist Church of Waco, the Rev. V.M. Cloyd, pastor. He received from Baylor University the A.B. degree in 1942 and the M.A. degree in May 1944. In the spring semester of 1944, he began attending Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary at Fort Worth, receiving the B.D. degree in 1948 and the Th.D. degree in July 1950. He served five churches half time and three churches full time during his college and seminary training years prior to beginning full-time college ministry as a biblical studies and religious education teacher in June 1950. His teaching career actually began as a half-time instructor when he established the Baptist Bible Chair at the Baptist Student Center adjoining the campus of East Texas State Teachers' College at Commerce in January 1946. He resigned there in August 1947 to concentrate on his graduate studies at the seminary, but taught biblical studies part time for three years at Paschal High School in Fort Worth from 1947-1950. Dr. Bettis' teaching/administration ministry included serving at the University of Corpus Christi (1950-1961), Carson-Newman College at Jefferson City, Tenn. (1961-1974), and Oklahoma Baptist University at Shawnee (1974-1986). After his retirement in 1986, he taught one semester each as an adjunct professor of biblical studies for Baylor University and for Howard Payne University learning Center in Corpus Christi. His major academic concern was providing ``practical training/experience to prepare the student for his respective ministry calling through internships and practicums'' for effective service. While teaching in Baptist collegiate higher education, he served as interim pastor of more than 50 churches in Texas, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Hawaii. He married Gladys Elaine Browning, his Baylor student sweetheart, on Nov. 20, 1942, at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church in Waco, the Rev. Woodson Armes officiating. Elaine's parents were the late U.S. and Gladys Fink Browning, longtime residents of Waco and active members of that church. Having no children of their own, they adopted a daughter, Myra Lin, in 1951, and a son, Nat Browning, in 1954. Dr. Bettis published several articles dealing with biblical interpretation and church vocations counseling. His books include ``Jesus Asks: a study of his reply questions to those who asked Him questions,'' ``Workbook for New Testament Study,'' ``Guidebook for Understanding Tennessee Baptists,'' ``Guidebook for In-Service Guidance at Oklahoma Baptist University,'' ``Workbook for Understanding Oklahoma Baptists,'' ``Handbook for the Off-Campus Education Program of Carson-Newman College'' and a family history on the ``Ancestry and Descendants of Alford and Margaret Conyers Bettis,'' his great- great-grandparents. For two years following retirement they sojourned in Waco, prior to relocating to the Baptist Memorials Retirement Center in San Angelo, considering it the best retirement facility for them from among several such centers they visited. In retirement, he remained active as a Baptist Memorials Auxiliary volunteer and as pulpit supply for area Baptist churches. In 1988, he served as interim pastor of the First Baptist Church of Waimea, Kamuela (Big Island), Hawaii, and in 1993-94, he served the Lahaina Baptist Church of Lahaina (Maui), Hawaii. While on the latter mission he was stricken with ``lungs dysfunction,'' later diagnosed as ``pulmonary hypertension, lung scars and congestive heart failure'' that forced him and Elaine to return home to San Angelo much earlier than they had expected. His preaching, teaching and church vocations counseling were the chief passions of his life ministry beyond his home and family. Dr. Bettis is survived by his wife, Gladys Elaine Browning Bettis of the home at Baptist Memorials Center; one son, Sgt. Nat Browning Bettis of the Noble, Okla., police department; one daughter, Myra Lin Bettis Murphy and her husband, Sgt. Mike Murphy of the Nome, Alaska, police department; and two granddaughters, Erin Elizabeth Murphy and Patricia Lin Murphy of Nome.
