RAYMOND `RAY' ATWATER ROBERT LEE - Ray Atwater died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at his home in Robert Lee. Ray was born Dec. 6, 1934, in Marysville, Mo. He married Anna Mae Arthurs on Feb. 4, 1962. Ray was the Robert Lee municipal judge. Ray's accomplishments in life were endless as he was forever taking on new endeavors and completing them at the highest possible level. He served in the Pacific during World War II. He was discharged Oct. 11, 1946. Wayne was a plumber by trade and owner and operator of a commercial plumbing and heating company for many years. Baseball was his favorite sport and although SHS did not have a baseball program at the time, Rex often considered playing in college after he worked out with semi-professional teams. He played on the San Angelo A's slow-pitch softball team that played in the Triple Crown tournament in Steamboat Springs, Colo. Most recently he coached the 10-year-olds all-star team for Northern Little League this past summer. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf with his favorite partner, Mason. Mr. Ramsey was born Oct. 13, 1921, in Perryton to Albert and Evie Ramsey. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Mr. Ramsey married Ava Smith Sept. 3, 1943, in Lubbock. He was preceded in death by one son, James Ramsey. Grover was a retired plumber. REX EDWIN SURBER SONORA - Rex Edwin Surber of Mertzon died Monday, July 27, 1998. Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 30, at the First Baptist Church. Arrangements are by Kerbow Funeral Home. Rex was born Nov. 3, 1962, in Iraan to J.C. and Loma Surber. He attended school in Rankin and Sonora and graduated from Sonora High School in 1981. He also attended Texas Tech University and Angelo State University. Sports and outdoors activities were a big part of Rex's life, fromthe time when he played football at Sonora to his involvement in Little League baseball with his son. Baseball was his favorite sport and although SHS did not have a baseball program at the time, Rex often considered playing in college after he worked out with semi-professional teams. He played on the San Angelo A's slow-pitch softball team that played in the Triple Crown tournament in Steamboat Springs, Colo. Most recently he coached the 10-year-olds all-star team for Northern Little League this past summer. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf with his favorite partner, Mason. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Womack Surber, and son, Mason Surber of Mertzon; his parents, J.C. and Loma Surber of Sonora; his brothers, Randy Surber of Sonora and Ronnie Surber and his wife, Suzanne, of Chipley, Fla.; Nancy's father and mother, Chick and Jane Womack; Nancy's sisters and their husbands, Molly and Ruben Abila and Jennifer and Tom Galloway; and Nancy's brother and his wife, Chuck and Angela Womack; five nieces and five nephews; and many relatives and special friends. CLARK CLARENCE STROUD DALLAS - Clark Clarence Stroud died July 29, 1998, in Dallas. He was born Aug. 16, 1909, in La Grange to Charles and Minnie Stroud. He was raised in Fort Worth and had been a resident of San Angelo for 45 years. He graduated in 1927 from W.C. Stripling High School in Fort Worth and from Texas A&M University in 1931 with a civil engineering degree. He was a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving with the 4th Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees) in Dutch Harbor. He worked for the Texas Highway Department for 30 years, his final assignment prior to his retirement in 1974 being as supervising resident engineer stationed in San Angelo. He was preceded in death by his parents, younger brother, Bill; and older sister, Isabel. He is survived by his wife, Grace Johnson Stroud, now residing in Dallas; a daughter, Gail Stroud Kirkham of Dallas; a son-in-law, Daryl Kirkham of Dallas; granddaughters, Kelly Kirkham and Katy Kirkham, both of Dallas; a grandson, Stephen Kirkham of San Diego; a brother, Braser Stroud of San Antonio; a niece, Jeanie Chaney of Houston; and a nephew, Chuck Stroud of San Diego. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, in the First Baptist Church Chapel. Burial will be in Kyle, Texas, in a rural cemetery near land homesteaded by her ancestors, early settlers of the Texas Hill Country. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Margarette Irwin was born March 14, 1926, in Kyle and was reared and attended schools in San Marcos. Her husband, Kenneth Irwin, preceded her in death Sept. 23, 1992. He worked for Sears, Roebuck & Co. for 34 years. ``Margarette was the greatest blessing of my life,'' a friend said, a sentiment shared by so many who knew her. She was a homemaker, a wife, mother and friend who used her talents and abilities to serve the Lord. A longtime member of First Baptist Church, she had a particular concern for children with special needs, which led her to begin a ministry for them at First Baptist in the late 1960s. Survivors include six children, Terry Irwin and wife, Brenda, of Crawford, Texas, Jon Irwin and wife, Barbara, of Oxnard, Calif., Georgia Douglass and husband, David, of Wheaton, Ill., Cindy Altemore and husband, Joe, of Crawford, Kenneth Irwin and wife, Brenda, of Belton, and Mark Irwin of San Angelo; two brothers, Billy Joe Stephenson and wife, Barbara, and John Young Stephenson and wife, Cissy; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and special friends. JOHNNIE DRAKE DONALSON STERLING CITY - Johnnie Drake Donalson, 92, died Thursday, July 30, 1998, in Sterling County Nursing Home. She was the youngest of four children born to John Henry Drake and Bessie Sims Drake on July 22, 1906, in Cotton Gin, Texas, in Freestone County. She moved to San Angelo on Feb. 1, 1921, and married Horrace Donalson on Sept. 9, 1925. They had one daughter, Betty Jane Donalson, born in Miles on Aug. 16, 1929. After taking a course in telegraphy, she worked at the State Sanitarium and Western Union. For more than 20 years, Mrs. Donalson served as city secretary for Sterling City. She was a life member of the Eastern Star and active in the First Presbyterian Church. Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at the First Presbyterian Church with burial in Miles Cemetery in Miles. The Rev. John Winteringham will officiate. Arrangements are by Ross Funeral Home. Surviving is one sister, Sue Drake of San Angelo; one son-in-law, Billy H. Barbee of Sterling City, a grandson, B.
