Services are pending at Grimes Funeral Chapels. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obituaries WANDA SUE WYATT Wanda Sue Wyatt, our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, was called home to be with her Lord on Friday, Aug. 7, 1998. Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, in Fairmount Cemetery with the Rev. John Reynolds and the Rev. James M. Rogers officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Sue was born June 9, 1924, to Minton and Lela Dixon. She grew up in Wall and later moved to San Angelo, where she lived all her life. On July 22, 1950, she married Jake Wyatt, her loving husband of 48 years. Before her retirement, Sue worked several years for the Texas Department of Human Resources. She was a member of Sierra Vista United Methodist Church. Mrs. Wyatt was the church secretary and a Sunday school teacher, working with the youth at Angelo Height United Methodist Church before it became Sierra Vista United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, Jake Wyatt of San Angelo; and two sons, Hal Wyatt and his wife, Kathy, and their sons, Luke, Ben and Travis, all of Mesa, Ariz., and John Wyatt and his wife, Kathy, and their sons, Jake, Clay, Wes and Boone, all of San Angelo. Sue's seven grandsons knew her as Nanny. She was very proud of them and all of their accomplishments. Nanny loved to attend any function in which they were involved, whether that be a music concert or a baseball game. She loved spending time with them, and they passed many days together playing Scrabble, visiting on the porch or talking long distance on the phone to those who lived out of town. Nanny also loved to do special things for family, friends and neighbors. She used her sewing machine to make many beautiful gifts for those she cared about. She also had a special talent for interior decorating, which she shared with others. The family requests memorials be made to a favorite charity. JAMES JULIUS HEYMAN Retired Col. James Julius ``Jim'' Heyman (USA) went home to Jesus on Monday, Aug. 3, 1998. James, the second son and third child of Roscoe M. Heyman Sr. and Grace Ray Heyman, was born in Menard, Texas, on May 22, 1923. James is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Shirley Burk Heyman; sister, Grace Ray Davenport; brother, Roscoe M. Heyman Jr.; daughter, Mary Grace Heyman; daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Terry Newman; two granddaughters; and two great- granddaughters. He excelled in school and graduated from Menard High School as valedictorian. He attended Tarleton State University briefly and then received an appointment to West Point and graduated in 1945. Following graduation, James was commissioned an officer in the Corps of Engineers and sent to Germany. When he returned to the United States, he married his high school sweetheart, Shirley. School played an important part throughout James' career as he earned an MS from MIT, taught at West Point, attended classes for officers in Fort Leavenworth and the Naval War College, completed an executive program at Harvard Business School and taught at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Other overseas assignments included a tour in Japan, two tours of duty in Korea, a tour each in Karachi, Pakistan and Bangkok, Thailand. James had resided in San Angelo since 1975 when he retired from the Army. He worked as the assistant city engineer for a number of years, left the city and finished his lifetime work at Hirschfeld Steel. James will be remembered for his priorities in life: God, family, others and his values: duty, honor and country. Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. LILLIAN SOCHA WILLIAMS HOLUBEC Lillian Socha Williams Holubec, 78, of San Angelo died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at her home. Rosary will be at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Lillian was born October 16, 1919, in Hallettsville to Fred Socha and Julie Kubus Socha. Lillian was employed in 1943 with San Angelo Truck and Tractor. In 1948, she went to work for Ballinger Truck and Tractor. Lillian was married in 1949 to Clyde Austin Williams, and he preceded her in death in December 1974. In 1969, she began selling insurance for SPJST. She also worked in the shoe department at Higginbotham's Department Store. Lillian married Alfons Holubec in January 1979 in Ballinger. Lillian was preceded in death by three sisters, including Irene Socha, Dorothy Gillespie and Mildred Socha. Survivors include her husband, Alfons Holubec of San Angelo; a daughter, Peggy Ann Williams of San Angelo; two sons, Dan Williams and wife, Irene, of Ballinger and David F. Interment will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Elvis was born Jan. 23, 1926, in Knox City and had been a resident of San Angelo since 1950. He retired, after 28 years, as a salesman for Angelo Pellets and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Elvis was married to Maroureen Thompson on Oct. 19, 1947, in Munday. She preceded him in death in December 1959. Survivors include his friend, Margie Howell of San Angelo; one sister, Rowena Barnard of San Angelo; one brother, Earl Hutchinson of Seymour; three nephews, Jerry Barnard of San Angelo, Mike Hutchinson of Fort Worth and Dwayne Hutchinson of Arlington; and three nieces, Lisa Hutchinson of Arlington and Jami and Jena Barnard of San Angelo. VIVIAN BARTON DORSEY Vivian Dorsey died suddenly Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, in the Sterling County Nursing Home in Sterling City. She was born Nov. 23, 1906, to Dr. William and Alice Barton in Bellevue. She had been a resident of the nursing home for the last two years and prior to that had lived in San Angelo and in Suffern, N.Y. She and her husband, Russell Dorsey, lived in a number of West Texas locations associated with the oil business and this included several oil ``boom towns'' and attendant fascinating stories. During the World War II years she and the children lived in Austin near her sister, Gladys Manning, while Capt. Dorsey served in Burma. She later joined her daughter's family in Suffern and also loved that area and lifestyle before returning to San Angelo in the 1970s. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Big Spring and a member of the Eastern Star. She was an eternal optimist and enjoyed life to the utmost. She is survived by her daughter, Alyce Hingle of Suffern; three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Norma Dorsey of San Angelo, William and Jenny Dorsey of Colleyville and Donald and Gloria Dorsey of Kerrville; and son-in-law, Pat Hingle of Wilmington, N.C. She also leaves seven granddaughters, Jody Hingle Smith, Molly Hingle Mantione, Alyce Dorsey Nanney, Beth Dorsey, Jenny Dorsey Gibson, Peggy Dorsey and Nicole Dorsey; and grandson, Bill Hingle. She also is survived by eight great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and loving friends. Marge Davis of Sterling City was a special friend and confidant as well as loving niece. Dixon, 91, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, in San Antonio. Having moved to the Wall community with his family at age 2, Ellis married the former Lealice King in 1938. Following a brief time in Louisiana during World War II, Ellis' civil service career brought the family back to San Angelo. After his retirement from Goodfellow AFB and hers from teaching in San Angelo public schools, Ellis and Lealice moved to Stephenville, where they remained until moving to San Antonio in 1991. Ellis is survived by his wife of 60 years; his daughters, Lou Nell Williams of San Antonio and Becky Rizer of Granbury; his son-in-law, David T. Williams; and his grandchildren, Tom and Susan Williams of San Antonio. The life of Mr. Dixon will be celebrated at a graveside service at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, in Fairmount Cemetery. In 1969, she began selling insurance for SPJST. She also worked in the shoe department at Higginbotham's Department Store. Lillian married Alfons Holubec in January 1979 in Ballinger. Lillian was preceded in death by three sisters, including Irene Socha, Dorothy Gillespie and Mildred Socha. JOSEPH EUGENE GETTE Joseph Eugene Gette, beloved father and grandfather, devoted husband of Phyllis Gette for 52 years, died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, in San Angelo Community Medical Center. The son of Andrew and Elizabeth Gette, he was born July 11, 1925, in Cando, N.D. He moved to Fort Worth as a young boy and graduated from Arlington Heights High School in the class of 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after graduation and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific. While recuperating at a military hospital in California, he met Phyllis Ruth Cole, and they married on Feb. 11, 1945. Returning to college after the war, he attended Loyola University in Los Angeles and was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Air Force in time to serve in the Korean Conflict. In 1965, he was transferred to Goodfellow AFB, and San Angelo became home after his retirement from the Air Force. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Kristi Gette of Arlington; a daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Ken Kelly of Woodbridge, Va.; a son, Andrew Gette of Grand Prairie; grandchildren, Amy and Amanda Kelly of Woodbridge, Brent and Rebecca Gette of Arlington, and Aaron and Alexis Gette of Amarillo; a sister, Betty Gette Smestad of Fort Worth; a half brother, Edwin Gette of Arvada, Colo.; a half sister, Rose Mary Benson of Denver; a stepbrother, Joseph Heit of Denver; and a stepsister, Francis Gruber of Arvada. SUE WALTER HALE Sue Walter Hale, 60 years of age, went to be with her Lord on Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, after a long courageous battle with diabetes. Sue was born on Feb. 10, 1938, to the James M. Walter and Gertrude Holiman Walter of San Angelo, Texas. She was married to Joseph P. Hale Sr. on April 15, 1960. Her beloved husband preceded her in death on Nov. 9, 1977. They made their home in San Angelo. Sue attended nursing school and obtained her bachelor of science degree from Angelo State University and a registered nursing license. After working as a head nurse in the cardiac intensive care and pediatric care units of Shannon West Texas Memorial Hospital, she worked as a nursing consultant for National Living Centers and as a nurse for Dr. Denver Marsh, M.D., retiring in 1995. Sue was an active member of Harris Avenue Baptist Church and loved singing in the choir. He was an active golfer at Ranchland Hills Country Club. Mr. Bowen was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeanne Mary Smith Bowen, of 41 years; two brothers; and a stepdaughter. WINFREY THOMAS LEWIS Winfrey Thomas Lewis, 80, of San Angelo died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at his residence. Winfrey was born May 10, 1918, in Waco and was a resident of San Angelo for five years. He was a retired supervisor for Helms Lumber Co. inHouston. He was a member of the Christ Church Cathedral in Houston. Winfrey was a first lieutenant in the 100th Bomb Group, a co-pilot on a plane called ``Rosie's Riveters'' of the 8th Air Force during World War II. The group flew the first mission to Bremen and the first raid over Berlin. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. For almost 60 years, the concrete control tower has stood sentinel over the grassy fields of Thorpe Abbotts, England. When the lone crew returned, there were many empty beds to greet them. It is said that after radioing that there were two wounded aboard, they attempted landing (with only two engines) and came in so low that even those standing atop the tower had to ``hit the deck.'' A general was among them. Later, he revived, dusted himself off and went out to congratulate ``Rosie's Riveters'' for coming home. A special friend is Charles Kelly, who was there, and knew what a ``shot-up B-17'' looks like. Another special friend, Mo-Ranch in Hunt, has given so many people, rich and poor, both fun and cultural sustenance. Winfrey was married to Norma Lenore Ugalde on April 22, 1943, in Houston. Alvin R. Luedecke (USAF, retired) passed away Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998, in San Antonio after a short illness. He was born Oct. 1, 1910, in Eldorado, Texas. General Luedecke, a veteran of World War II, retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1958 and served as general manager of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission for nearly five years. He then served as deputy director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, overseeing the successful Voyager and Surveyor spacecraft missions. He then served his alma mater, Texas A&M University, in the School of Engineering and later as acting president of the Texas A&M University system. He remained in Bryan but pursued ranching interests in West Texas for a period of time. General Luedecke was preceded in death by his first wife, Gussie Lee, and his second wife, Lee Synan. He leaves behind his wife of 11 years, Isabelle; and his three children, Jan Lee Maynard, Miriam Adair Luedecke and Alvin Rouble Luedecke Jr. He also is survived by three grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous sisters, nieces and nephews. Additionally, he leaves three stepchildren and two step-grandchildren. JOSEPH EUGENE GETTE Joseph Eugene Gette, beloved father and grandfather, devoted husband of Phyllis Gette for 52 years, died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, in San Angelo Community Medical Center. Rosary was Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery. The son of Andrew and Elizabeth Gette, he was born July 11, 1925, in Cando, N.D. He moved to Fort Worth as a young boy and graduated from Arlington Heights High School in the class of 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after graduation and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific. While recuperating at a military hospital in California, he met Phyllis Ruth Cole, and they married on Feb. 11, 1945. Returning to college after the war, he attended Loyola University in Los Angeles and was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Air Force in time to serve in the Korean Conflict. In 1965, he was transferred to Goodfellow AFB, and San Angelo became home after his retirement from the Air Force. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis. WINFREY THOMAS LEWIS Winfrey Thomas Lewis, 80, of San Angelo died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at his residence. Winfrey was born May 10, 1918, in Waco and was a resident of San Angelo for five years. He was a retired supervisor for Helms Lumber Co. in Houston. He was a member of the Christ Church Cathedral in Houston. Winfrey was a first lieutenant in the 100th Bomb Group, a co-pilot on a plane called ``Rosie's Riveters'' of the 8th Air Force during World War II. The group flew the first mission to Bremen and the first raid over Berlin. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. For almost 60 years, the concrete control tower has stood sentinel over the grassy fields of Thorpe Abbotts, England. When the lone crew returned, there were many empty beds to greet them. It is said that after radioing that there were two wounded aboard, they attempted landing (with only two engines) and came in so low that even those standing atop the tower had to ``hit the deck.'' A general was among them. Later, he revived, dusted himself off and went out to congratulate ``Rosie's Riveters'' for coming home. A special friend is Charles Kelly, who was there, and knew what a ``shot-up B-17'' looks like. Another special friend, Mo-Ranch in Hunt, has given so many people, rich and poor, both fun and cultural sustenance. Winfrey was married to Norma Lenore Ugalde on April 22, 1943, in Houston. She moved to San Angelo in 1927. She was a member of Brown Chapel CME and later united with Wesley United Methodist Church, where she remained a member until her homegoing. Lizzie was a self-employed cook for many years. In 1962, she retired only part time. Her ministering was the care for others, and her love for others was always visible. Lizzie never met a stranger. She would often be mother to those who had no mother. Even at more than a hundred years old, she was on the move. On Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, God saw a beautiful flower in his garden and decided to pluck it for himself. Our Aunt Lizzie will never be forgotten. Survivors include nephews, Fred D. She was a member of Brown Chapel CME and later united with Wesley United Methodist Church where she remained a member until her homegoing. Lizzie was a self-employed cook for many years. In 1962, she retired only part time. Her ministering was the care for others, and her love for others was always visible. Lizzie never met a stranger. She would often be mother to those who had no mother. Even at more than a hundred years old, she was on the move. On Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, God saw a beautiful flower in his garden and decided to pluck it for himself. Our Aunt Lizzie will never be forgotten. Survivors include nephews, Fred D. Shaw, respected West Texas ranchman and leader in civic and family affairs, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, in Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo. He was born May 16, 1909, in Dermott, Scurry County. At age 18, Joe began his ranching career as a cowboy on the old Bar S Ranch. He worked there for 10 years, becoming head windmill man and eventually ranch foreman. At age 24, he met the new, pretty school marm, Verda Tankersley. She had come to the Bar S to teach the ranch kids. Joe and Verda married on June 27, 1937, in the front parlor of the old Tankersley family home in Mertzon. Joe was known for his love of his church, his family and the land he ranched. He was a lifelong Baptist, serving the Mertzon Baptist Church as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and chairman of the building committee for the current sanctuary. Joe was a member of the local school board while his children were in school, also serving as chairman of the board. Joe was a 50-year member of the Irion County Masonic Lodge No. 699. He was a past master and held a lifetime certificate to teach, instructing dozens of Masons in their work over a period of decades. He was a member of the York Rite and a Shriner. He also received the Golden Trowel Award, the highest recognition given a Mason. His family includes his wife, Verda T. Shaw of Mertzon, and their children, Janet Middlebrook of Dallas, Joe W. Shaw Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Richardson, Steve Shaw and his wife, Nancy, of Midland and Terry Shaw and his wife, Anne, of Broomfield, Colo. His grandchildren are Steve and Patsy Middlebrook, parents of Joe's great-grandson, Bryce, Lisa and Jim Oetken, Kim and Kirk Zander, Katie and Sean Cox, Will Shaw and Lauren and Theresa Shaw. He also is survived by his sister, Pauline Pixley, and his sister-in-law, Verna B. Atkinson. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Gary Tankersley, Neil Tankersley, B.W. Reed, Harold Shaw, Loye Tankersley and Stanley Shaw. Honorary pallbearers will be all other nephews, along with Phillip Walker, Francis ``Shot'' Shelton, Eddie Martin, Rance Brunson, L.L. Farr III, Howard Parks and Monte Noelke. Joe will be remembered by his family, friends and fellow ranchers as a man of strong faith, personal warmth, integrity and strong character. ELLA BOLT OWENS Ella Bolt Owens, 103, pioneer rancher of Reagan County, passed into the arms of the Lord on Thursday, Aug. 13, 1998, in Reagan County Care Center in Big Lake. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, in Robert Massie Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Clyde ``Chip'' Allen Jr., pastor of the First UnitedMethodist Church of Rankin, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Mrs. Owens was born Aug. 29, 1894, in Kimble County at the ranch home of her parents, Edward and Lottie Bolt. She married Tom Owens in 1917. They had two daughters, Lottie Jo and Margaret. They ranched in Crockett, Reagan and Upton counties. After Tom's death in 1967, Ella operated and lived on their Reagan County ranch until 1995. Ella was a strong woman with a soft heart. She had endless depths of knowledge and wisdom on life in general, and ranching in particular. Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Owens, and daughter, Margaret. She is survived by her daughter, Lottie Jo (Sug) and her husband, Shank Bloxom, of Rankin; her grandson, Tom and wife, Lou Bloxom, of Rankin; granddaughter, Debbie and husband, Henry Lide, of Andrews; and five great-grandchildren, Sha Bloxom, Amy, Lorissa, Aaron and Katie Lide. Pallbearers will be her nephews, Buck Owens of Barnhart, Tommy Clint Owens of Rankin, Rusty Owens of Reagan County, Dudley Owens of Snyder, Ellis Word Owens of Sheffield and Tommy Workman of Rankin. Though Ella has left us physically, her love still lingers and memories remain for her family and the people who cared for her.
