Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. in Wallace Creek Cemetery in San Saba. Mr. Smithhart was born June 23, 1950, in San Angelo. He served in the U.S. Army and had been a job foreman for Bunyard Construction Co. in San Angelo. He was preceded in death by his father, Miles H. Smithhart, and his grandparents, Hubert and Oma Smithhart and Tom and Mabel Bytheway. Martinez, 85, of San Angelo died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, in a local care center. Prayer service was Monday in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Emilia was born July 13, 1913, in Eagle Pass. She married Frank A. Martinez Aug. 13, 1928, in Eden. He preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 1978. Survivors include four sons, Sammy Alanez and Frank Martinez Jr., both of Porter, and Moses Martinez and Daniel Martinez, both of San Angelo; two daughters, Lillie Delgado of Fort Worth and Pauline M. BERNARD M. `BERNIE' LAWLOR Bernard M. ``Bernie'' Lawlor of San Angelo died peacefully at his home on Sept. 6, 1998, surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 18, 1941, in Lewiston, Maine, the son of William T. and Mary Edith Lawlor. He was a graduate of Lewiston High School. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force for 27 years, serving in the United States, Japan and Guam. He retired in 1985. For the past 13 years he had been employed by the San Angelo Independent School District as maintenance dispatcher. Mr. Lawlor, a caring unselfish advocate for special needs children and his wife, Lou, were foster parents to more than 75 children from 1982 to 1996. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cassandra Marie, who died in 1993 at the age of 13 and a grandson, Gary, who died in 1985. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Louisa Lawlor; two sons, Bernard M. Lawlor and wife, Sandra, of Lubbock and Wendall T. Lawlor of San Angelo; four daughters, Verrhonda Garduno and husband, Gary, Ann Sexton and husband, Randy, Margaret A. Lawlor and Rachel Lawlor, all of San Angelo; a sister, Mary (Mrs. Peter) Dionne of Augusta, Maine; a brother, William T. Lawlor of Potomac, Md.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and his uncle and aunt, Stephen and Lucille Crawley of Oakland, Maine. Military graveside rites will follow in Belvedere Memorial Park. MAXINE SEARCY BURKS Maxine Searcy Burks, 61, of San Angelo went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998. Service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, at Antioch First Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. M.E. Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, in Starks Funeral Home Chapel. Maxine was born March 18, 1937, in Robstown, Texas, to Leonard and Essie Searcy. She had been a resident of San Angelo since 1950. She obtained a nurse's aide certificate from Howard College. She was very active in the community and her church as a devoted Christian. She visited and comforted the sick, disabled and elderly. She was a very faithfulmember of Mission No. 2, Sunday school, choir and Prayer Band at her church. She cooked and baked many goods to help support the church and local fund-raisers. Maxine always was willing to help and come to the aid of others. She will truly be missed. She is survived by her husband of 43 years and 10 months, James C. Burks Sr.; her sons, James C. Burks Jr. of Southern Pines, N.C., and Gregory D. Burks of San Francisco, Calif.; her daughter, Stephanie R. Jackson, and son-in-law, Eugene M. Jackson, of Las Cruces, N.M.; her father, Leonard Searcy of San Angelo; stepmother, Annie M. He was born July 18, 1941, in Lewiston, Maine, the son of William T. and Mary Edith Lawlor. He was a graduate of Lewiston High School. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force for 27 years, serving in the United States, Japan and Guam. He retired in 1985. For the past 13 years, he had been employed by the San Angelo Independent School District as maintenance dispatcher. Mr. Lawlor, a caring and unselfish advocate for special-needs children and his wife, Lou, were foster parents to more than 75 children from 1982 to 1996. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cassandra Marie, who died in 1993 at the age of 13, and a grandson, Gary, who died in 1985. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Louisa Lawlor; two sons, Bernard M. Lawlor and wife, Sandra, of Lubbock and Wendall T. Lawlor of San Angelo; four daughters, Verrhonda Garduno and husband, Gary, Ann Sexton and husband, Randy, Margaret A. Lawlor and Rachel Lawlor, all of San Angelo; a sister, Mary (Mrs. Peter) Dionne of Augusta, Maine; a brother, William T. Lawlor of Potomac, Md.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and his uncle and aunt, Stephen and Lucille Crawley of Oakland, Maine. Maurice Voity officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Herman was born July 6, 1917, in Westphalia, Iowa. He worked as a mechanic. He married Rita Wirtz on Dec. 30, 1941, in Westphalia. Herman was a member of the Cathedral Church of the Sacred Heart and had been a resident of San Angelo for many years. He was a farmer for 11 years, was employed by Angelo Truck and Tractor for 30 years and worked for Concho Valley Implement for nine years. He retired at the age of 80 after years of hard and honest work. Fletch was born Nov. 9, 1911, to John Marion and Iva Johnston Blackburn in the Gunsight community, Stephens County. He attended school in Gunsight and Parks, went to high school in Breckenridge and Cisco and attended college in Weatherford. He played football for the Cisco Lobos state championship team. Fletch was a legendary golfer in San Angelo and the surrounding area. He worked in the Odessa oil fields in 1936. Odessa was a tent city boom town. He moved to Amarillo in 1944 during the Great Depression and black dirt sandstorms where he worked for his cousin, Clark Dye. Fletch married Dixie Miller on Jan. 29, 1933, in Cisco. Fletch and his family moved to San Angelo in 1944 to go into business for himself. He was a Realtor for 43 years and he served as president of the San Angelo Real Estate Board and on many committees for the state board. He and his wife, Dixie, owned Blackburn Realty Co. Helen was born Sept. 3, 1919, to B.V. and Lacy Bagley in Italy, Texas. She moved to San Angelo at the age of 12 and graduated from Lake View High School on May 26, 1939. She married her high school sweetheart, Curtis Jennings, on the same night. Working along with her pastor husband, she was very active in church work as a youth counselor and adult Bible teacher. She was the first director at the Holly Ridge Center, a school for the mentally retarded located in Bremerton, Wash. Helen was responsible for creating the initial programs for teaching the challenged. She received many accolades from the state governor and state senators. She also was nominated for Woman of the Year honors for 1971. Helen retired to Longview in 1984. After a stroke and long illness, in God's grace she has moved from a rest home to her eternal home of rest. Helen was promoted to her home in glory Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at the age of 79. Helen is survived by her husband of 59 years, the Rev. Curtis Jennings of Longview; one son, Wayne Jennings and wife, Brenda, of Fort Worth; one daughter, Jeanie McKay and husband, David, of Redmond, Wash. She also is survived by two grandsons, Ted Jennings of Edmond, Okla., and Spec. Aaron McKay stationed in Germany; and three great-grandchildren. For 12 years Joe was director of the mental retardation service at the MHMR center and was a member of Congregation Beth Israel. He attended public school and Oklahoma A&M University in Stillwater and was very active in high school and college bands, orchestras and choirs. Dr. Lewis was a member of the Boy Scouts and a life member of the Methodist Church, where he taught church school classes over the years and sang in the church choir. He held a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Oklahoma A&M University, Master of Fine Arts Degree and Doctorate of Education from Oklahoma University at Norman, Okla. Dr. Lewis was a speech therapist for five years in Oklahoma and Texas schools and was university teaching for 28 years, beginning at the University of Pacific in Stockton, Calif.; Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kan.; McMurry University in Abilene; and Angelo State University, where he taught in the Department of Education and Psychology for 19 years, retiring in 1986. Dr. Lewis married Anita Joyce Montgomery in Stillwater on Aug. 27, 1944. He is survived by his wife, Anita, of the home; a daughter, Meredith Lewis of Grand Prairie; a son, Kirby Lewis of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Dr. Leon E. Lewis of De Soto; one granddaughter, Julie Lineburgh of Akron, Ohio; a niece, Susan Elizabeth Kurt of Charlotte, N.C.; a nephew, James Kenneth Lewis of Long Beach, Miss.; a cousin, Wanda York of Fort Calhoun, Neb.; and many special friends whom he always cherished. Memorials maybe made to a charity of choice or to the First United Methodist Church in San Angelo. ODILIA BIEDERMANN DROLL Odilia Biedermann Droll, 97, of Georgetown died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, in a Temple hospital. Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rowena. Mrs. Droll was born Sept. 11, 1901, in Moulton, Texas, to Joe Biedermann and Alma Siedel Biedermann. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, and daughter, JoAnn. Mrs. Droll is survived by three sons, Victor Droll and the Rev. Louis Droll, both of Georgetown, and Daniel Droll of McAllen; a daughter, Alma Mixon of Georgetown; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
