Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at Cross Road Assembly of God with the Rev. Steve Hamm officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Robert Massie Funeral Home. Charles Horace Whitlock was born in Paint Rock, Texas, May 29, 1936, to Lee Roy and Eunice Whitlock. He worked from the time he was big enough beside his parents and brother and sister picking cotton, gathering pecans, vegetables, chopping cotton, whatever job to feed the large family in the depression years. Charles met and married Mary Burkes Oct. 25, 1955, in San Angelo. Inducted in the Army Dec. 3, 1958, basic training in Colorado Springs, Colo., assigned to the Medical Corps in San Antonio, Charles was stationed at Fort Hood for the remainder of the tour. Charles was recalled to duty during the Cuban crisis for 10 months and remained in the Army Reserves for two years. He returned to work for the SAISD, changed jobs to Rogers Machine Shop, then worked for ASU and then started work for Pool Well Service in 1977 till his death Sept. 16 while on an ``Anti-Freeze Run'' in Denver City. Charles is walking in glory without pain or limp. Charles used to hunt and fish. He joined the Bass Club and wore a trophy for first place in his first tournament. He loved to go out in his boat early and bass fish all alone in the morning. After the grandchildren came along, his fishing was untangling lines and baiting hooks for all the little fishermen he loved to take with him. One of his not-so-little fishermen was his wife's grandmother, 96 years old in a wheelchair living in a nursing home. He took her to church and lunch and then to the fishing hole where he tied the wheelchair to a tree or stake so it would not end up in the water when Grannie reeled in the catfish which she caught. All who spent 20 minutes with Charles went away a wiser being. He gave his wife a Sheltie puppy who chose him as her master over her, and he liked that fine. The most precious and loved in his life beside Mary is Jeannie their only child. The only thing to compare to this love is Jeannie's three children, Colby, Jerrod and little Lauryn. Grandchildren brought out a more thoughtful, loving, caring, patient Paw-Paw this side of Heaven will ever know. Charles had a thankfulness for each and every day of life God gave him. Some days were much worse than others. He never became discouraged at trying to work at making the very best of all situations and trying to put himself in the other person's shoes. Charles had a love for every relative of his or Mary's friend, neighbor, co-worker, stranger and a special way with every child, whatever the age, he ever met. His recreation, relaxation and joy came from taking his metal detector out and hunting treasures with his wife even if she found more than he. God called a child home that this world cannot replace. He is survived by his wife, Mary Etta Whitlock of San Angelo; a daughter, Jeannie L. Nicholson of Rock Vale, Tenn.; his father, Lee Roy Whitlock of San Angelo; four brothers, James Whitlock, Allen Whitlock and Joseph Whitlock, all of San Angelo, and Don Whitlock of Brownwood; three sisters, Betty Townsend of Calvert and Helen Pope and Judy Whitley, both of Brownwood; five grandchildren, Dean Nicholson Jr., Louis Nicholson, and Colby, Jerrod and Lauryn George and numerous aunts and uncles. Pallbearers will be Delloyd Hooser of Big Spring, Gary Gilbert, Ken Michalik, Pat McDonald, Ray Cooper and Neal Guttery, all of San Angelo. Honorary pallbearers are all Pool Co. employees, past and present, and special friends, Mickey Nelms, John Mayfield, Craig Driver, Jimmy Ynostrosa, Bill Rowaldt, Jerome Hanna, Neal Grigg and Berry Marshal.
