ROBERT WILSON BARR CRANE - Graveside service for Robert Wilson Barr has been set for 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, in Crane Cemetery with the Rev. Jim McWilliams officiating. He passed away Oct. 23, 1998, in Odessa Medical Hospital. He was born Aug. 3, 1913, in Starr, Texas. He married Bobbie Lucille Owens June 30, 1934, in San Angelo. Mr. Barr was a graduate of San Angelo High School where he played football in 1932. He was a member of the Crane United Methodist Church. He began ranching in Barnhart. In 1940 the family moved to the ranch in Crane and Upton counties where he was active until his death. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Barr of San Angelo, and a sister, Mrs. Pat Salvato. Survivors include his two daughters, Mrs. Nina Hooper of Crane and Mrs. Sheila Carson of Odessa; three grandchildren, Shawn Hooper of Odessa, Kyle Hooper of Penwell and Casey Carson of Lubbock; five great grandchildren, Stormy, Michaeli, Brittain, Vanessa and Samray; a sister, Mrs. Mary Harris of San Angelo; eight nieces; and 19 great-nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are by Richard W. Box Funeral Home. ROBERT O. WARREN Robert O. Warren, longtime resident of Crane passed away Friday, Oct. 23, 1998, in Llano, Texas, after a short illness. Mr. Warren was born Oct. 29, 1914, in Hollywood, Ala. His parents were George Winton and Prudence (Hartley) Warren. He had five brothers, two stepsisters and one half brother. He married Jewel White on Jan. 25, 1927, in Palo Pinto County. They were married for 65 years. Mrs. Warren preceded him in death in April 1993. Mr. Warren had worked most of his adult life in the oilfields of West Texas, Kansas and East Texas. He was an early pioneer of the Crane field, having worked for the Eastland Oil Co., Warner Quinlin Oil Co. and Cities Service Oil Co. He completed 42 years of oil experience in 1970 and retired from the Cities Service Oil Co. in Longview, Texas, as a field foreman. He moved to San Angelo that same year and lived in San Angelo through December 1997 before he moved to Kingsland. Mr. Warren was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in San Angelo. While living in Crane, Mr. Warren took an active part in school activities and served on the school board for 10 years. One of his proud accomplishments was helping Crane acquire a new high school, elementary and junior high building. Survivors include two sons, Darrell and his wife, Jean, of Buchanan Dam and Dwain and his wife, Ann, of Dallas; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters and the ETO ribbon with four battle stars. N.T. began his teaching career in 1949 in the Norton community and taught and coached for 35 years in Norton, Ballinger and Miles. He was a life member of the PTA and the Texas State Teachers Association and the National Education Association, the Runnels County United of Retired Teachers Association and the Texas Association of Community Schools. He held a 44-year membership pin in the Lions Club and was a charter member of the Norton Lions Club. In the Miles Lions Club, he served as secretary-treasurer for 10 years and president of the club twice, and was voted Citizen of the Year in 1979 and 1984. He pastored small Baptist churches in Maverick, Valley View, Mereta, Third Avenue Baptist Church in Ballinger, Millersview and Doole. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dr. Landon Gault, DVM; and one sister, Mrs. Mildred Gault Jones. On July 23, 1945, N.T. Gault and Mary Yell were united in marriage in Brownwood. She attended Odessa public schools and graduated from Odessa High School in 1928. June 25, 1931, she and Homer Ingham of Midland were married in the Bates home in Odessa. Homer, like his father, Frank Ingham, ranched in Reagan County near Stiles, Texas, so Homer and Cap lived at the ranch but made Midland their headquarters and raised their children there. They also had ranching interests in Colorado and New Mexico. After Homer's death in 1956, she continued to live in their home at 1104 W. Illinois St. in Midland. In 1990, she sold the home to the High Sky Girls Home and moved to San Angelo. Her hobbies were oil and china painting, and she collected antiques and refinished them. She belonged to a piano and organ club and a garden club and was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church. She also was preceded in death by one son, Frank Ingham; one grandson, Dearl Ingham; two brothers, Bob Bates and George Bates; and four sisters, Alice Bates Tripp, Leila Bates Graham, Emily Bates Pegues and Hattie Jo Bates. She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Mary and Buster Cole of Goldsmith and Dona and Hanie Ivy of San Angelo; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. WILLIAM EDWARD KROUT MALVERN, Ark. - William Edward Krout, our loved one, died at home on the evening of Oct. 25, 1998, after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was 69 years old. His career with Armour took him many places, and in 1938 he met and married Dorothy E. Ward in Chicago. Three children came from this union, Patricia Ann, Donna Lucille and Sandra Kathryn. The family moved to San Angelo in 1956, and Jim retired from Armour in 1968. In his retirement, he enjoyed golfing with the guys at Riverside and was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge. He made many lasting friendships in his lifetime, and he never met a stranger. Jim was an avid baseball fan all of his life and often shared his memories of the early days of the sport with his family and friends. In his later years, he especially enjoyed watching his great-grandson, Gary Jr., play many games of the sport he loved so much. Jim also enjoyed bowling and football. He attended the first professional football game of the Chicago Bears. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, seven siblings and the mother of his children. Snell, surrounded by loving family and close friends, went to be with Jesus on Oct. 28, 1998, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 55 years old and a resident of San Angelo for more than 20 years. Service will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at Belmore Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Chris Seidlitz and the Rev. He entered the USAF in 1960, was a Vietnam veteran, and after an illustrious career in which he earned many medals and awards, retired in 1980. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 16 years. He married his childhood sweetheart, Gloria, June 23, 1961, in Mableton, Ga. They shared 37 wonderful years devoted to each other and enjoyed their favorite outdoor activity, traveling and camping. Survivors include his wife, Glo, of the home; daughters, Diana Haggerton of Arlington and her daughter, Mary, and son, Jason, Lisa Snell of Abilene, and Deborah Dickens and her husband, Sidney, and their daughter, Casandra, all of San Angelo. ANNIE VERNICE KING Annie Vernice King passed into eternal rest on Oct. 28, 1998, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 81. Ms. King was a soldier of the Salvation Army Church and a longtime resident of San Angelo, Texas, where she worked as a nurse for more than 13 years. Vernice was preceded in death by her husband, Leeland Eugene King; her son, Thomas L. King; her sisters, Betty Wylie and Alene Moore; and her mother, Ora Allie Shields. I am not there; I did not die. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HUGH DAVID BRAMBLE Hugh David Bramble of San Angelo passed away Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, in Shannon Medical Center. Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, in Robert Massie Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Harriett Community Cemetery in Harriett. Hugh was born March 3, 1942, in Kansas City, Mo., the only son of Robert F. and Eva Jo (Montgomery) Bramble. He graduated from Clinton (Okla.) High School in 1960 and attained a B.S. in electrical engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1970. Hugh worked for Video Leachman Theaters and operated a heating and refrigeration service while attending OSU. Hugh began his career in Cable Television Engineering with Frontier Cablevision in Stillwater, Okla., a subsidiary of ATC, in 1971. He served as that system's chief engineer until he moved to ATC's home office in Denver as new systems project engineer in 1973. Hugh became director of operations for Viacom's Dayton, Ohio, system in 1975. He moved to San Angelo in 1978 as senior engineer for UA-Columbia Cablevision. He became director of Engineering West for United Artists Cablesystems/Rogers UA in San Angelo in 1981. In 1986 he formed Bramble Scientific, a cable television engineering consulting firm. He became principle engineer for Jones Intercable of Englewood, Colo. in 1987. He accepted the post of director of engineering for Columbia International of San Angelo in 1990. He worked for Thomason Enterprises of Atlanta, Ga., earlier this year. Although working for out-of-state firms, he rarely lived away from San Angelo. He continued to operate Bramble Scientific from 1986 until his death. Hugh loved working on cutting edge technology in the cable industry and served as a patient teacher and mentor to many young and aspiring engineers. Hugh was a member of the National Cable Television Association, senior member of the Society of Cable Television Engineers and a life member of the Oklahoma State University Alumni Association. He had published numerous articles in industry journals and was a frequent speaker at cable television seminars and conventions. He married Anne (Olmstead) Bramble in 1964 in Stillwater, Okla. Hugh was preceded in death by his father, Robert F. Bramble. Survivors include his wife; one son, Paul of San Angelo; and his mother, Eva Jo (Montgomery) Bramble of Oklahoma City. Serving as pallbearers are Bob Amo, Jody Shields, Tony Shields and Joe Santellano, all of San Angelo, and Travis Olmstead and Bob Williams, both of Euless. CHARLES AKEN McKAY AUSTIN - Charles Aken McKay, 73, of Austin and Mason, and formerly of Crane, passed away Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998. Charles retired from ARCO and was a member of the Retiree Association. He was most recently employed by Heritage Plaza Retirement Community, and with his son, Don, at Bert's Dirts in Austin. He was also a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After many years of faithful service in several churches, Charles was a deacon at First Baptist Church in Mason. He is survived by his wife, Doris H. McKay of Austin and Mason; three sons, Bob McKay and wife, Donna, and Don McKay and wife, Kathy, all of Austin and Mike McKay of Fort Worth; four grandchildren, Jill Brown and husband, Scott, Joshua Charles McKay, Amanda McKay and Carrie McKay; and one sister, Neva Jo Brooks and husband, Carl, of Sun City, Ariz. ALVIS STRICKLAND Wylbur Alvis Strickland, 80, of San Angelo, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, in Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, in the chapel of the First Baptist Church with burial following in Fairmount Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Alvis was born in Cross Plains, Texas, on Feb. 7, 1918, and was the youngest child in a family of ten children, having seven sisters and two brothers. During his earlier years he lived in Fairview, Shawnee and Collinsville, Okla., where his father pastored Baptist churches. He graduated from Collinsville High School and attended Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla. He met Evelyn Corder of Tulsa, Okla., also a student and they were married on Feb. 7, 1938, in Davenport, Okla. He holds a bachelor of arts degree from Union University, Jackson, Tenn., attended Vanderbilt University of Divinity in Nashville and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. He had special training in public relations at the University of Tennessee, Boston University School of Public Relations and Communications and the Syracuse University School of Marketing. He was ordained to the ministry in 1939 and had pastored churches in Texas, Oklahoma and Tennessee. In 1954 to 1959, he served California Southern Baptists as the director of the Sunday school department of the Southern Baptist General Convention of California in Fresno. The following 25 years were spent in Nashville as director of growth and evangelism for adult division of the Sunday school department of the former Baptist Sunday School Board that is now the LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. He was a member of the Baptist Public Relations Association, Religious Public Relations Council, Sales Promotion Executives and Sales and Marketing Executives International. In 1985, Strickland moved from Nashville to make his home at the Baptist Memorials Center. He was active in the First Baptist Church teaching men's Bible classes and in the Baptist Memorials Hospital Auxiliary, serving as president in 1994-95. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Evelyn; one son, John S. Strickland of Fresno, and his wife, Joy; one daughter, Addie Ann Phillips and her husband, Robert L.; five grandchildren, John S. Strickland III and Mrs. Jana Zelasko of California, Mrs. Robanne Phillips Stading of Alaska, Fayebeth Phillips of Houston and Holly Alyce Phillips of Washington; and three great-granddaughters, Morgan and Taylor Strickland and Claire Zelasko of California. Also he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ray Duckworth of Orlando, Fla., and Mrs. Lester Hartley of Plainview; and by 53 nephews and nieces.
