No services are planned. Arrangements are by Croxford & Sons Funeral Home. Mrs. Griggs was born Aug. 29, 1903, in Palo Pinto, Texas. She was married to Gordon Griggs for 50 years. He preceded her in death in 1984. She began teaching school in 1924 in various schools in Texas for more than 40 years. She received her master's degree from Sul Ross State University and retired from Lake View High School. She served on the Texas Classroom Teachers Association and on the Texas State Teachers Board. She was very active in the United Methodist Church in San Angelo where she taught Sunday school for 24 years. She enjoyed traveling and children. Her whole life was spent enjoying and teaching children. She is survived by granddaughters, Debbie Cathel of Great Falls and Denise Lantz of Rhode Island; and a grandson, Gordon Vavra of New York; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great- grandchild. She also was preceded in death by one child, Mary Yvonne Hanna. W. ALVIS STRICKLAND Wylbur Alvis Strickland, 80, of San Angelo, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, in Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, in the chapel of the First Baptist Church with burial following in Fairmount Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Alvis was born in Cross Plains, Texas, on Feb. 7, 1918, and was the youngest child in a family of ten children, having seven sisters and two brothers. During his earlier years he lived in Fairview, Shawnee and Collinsville, Okla., where his father pastored Baptist churches. He graduated from Collinsville High School and attended Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla. He met Evelyn Corder of Tulsa, Okla., also a student and they were married on Feb. 7, 1938, in Davenport, Okla. He holds a bachelor of arts degree from Union University, Jackson, Tenn., attended Vanderbilt University of Divinity in Nashville and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. He had special training in public relations at the University of Tennessee, Boston University School of Public Relations and Communications and the Syracuse University School of Marketing. He was ordained to the ministry in 1939 and had pastored churches in Texas, Oklahoma and Tennessee. In 1954 to 1959, he served California Southern Baptists as the director of the Sunday school department of the Southern Baptist General Convention of California in Fresno. The following 25 years were spent in Nashville as director of growth and evangelism for adult division of the Sunday school department of the former Baptist Sunday School Board that is now the LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. He was a member of the Baptist Public Relations Association, Religious Public Relations Council, Sales Promotion Executives and Sales and Marketing Executives International. In 1985, Strickland moved from Nashville to make his home at the Baptist Memorials Center. He was active in the First Baptist Church teaching men's Bible classes and in the Baptist Memorials Hospital Auxiliary, serving as president in 1994-95. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Evelyn; one son, John S. Strickland of Fresno, and his wife, Joy; one daughter, Addie Ann Phillips and her husband, Robert L.; five grandchildren, John S. Strickland III and Mrs. Jana Zelasko of California, Mrs. Robanne Phillips Stading of Alaska, Fayebeth Phillips of Houston and Holly Alyce Phillips of Washington; and three great-granddaughters, Morgan and Taylor Strickland and Claire Zelasko of California. Also he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ray Duckworth of Orlando, Fla., and Mrs. Lester Hartley of Plainview; and by 53 nephews and nieces. Hands and husband, Jerry, and Thomas C. Morgan, all of Albuquerque, Hope E. Kile and husband, Bob, of San Angelo and Pat B. Morgan and wife, Kay, of Denver; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Thomas C. Morgan. Clay was born June 29, 1953, in Sonora. He was a retired police officer having served in the San Angelo Police Department for many years. BARBARA ANN FREEMAN Barbara Ann Freeman, 50, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, at her residence. Ms. Freeman was born Jan. 13, 1948, in Texon, the daughter of Benny and Ruth Todd Freeman. She graduated from Reagan County High School. She moved to San Angelo in 1967 and was employed with GTE where she held various positions until she retired in 1995. She worked at Shannon Clinic Credit Department and later returned to GTE as an instructor. Her earliest Christian experience was at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Upon moving to San Angelo, she united with Antioch Baptist Church and later united with Christian Fellowship Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her mother and brother, Fred Stanley. ``Freeman'' as she was called, was a very loving, unselfish and caring person. She freely gave of her time and support. She enjoyed helping others and ensured that needy families would receive bountiful baskets for Thanksgiving and Christmas. She is survived by her father; two sisters, Ruth E. Freeman of San Angelo and Carolyn Goodloe of Big Lake; one brother, Larry Freeman of Big Lake; two nephews, Michael and Brian Goodloe of Big Lake, a great-nephew, Joshua Goodloe; ``Mom'' Jessie Green; three godchildren; and a host of relatives and numerous friends. She was loved by many and will be missed dearly. JAMES INMAN PAYNE FORT WORTH - James Inman Payne, 68, died Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, at his residence in Fort Worth. Following the tradition set by his father and elder brother, he played football for and graduated from SMU in 1953. Jim began his career in education as a teacher and coach at Ector High School in Odessa. He later served as athletic director and head football coach at Ector and Corsicana. After earning a master's degree in educational administration from East Texas State University, Jim served as high school principal in Sanderson and Ozona as well as superintendent in Ozona before retiring in 1993. Since moving to Fort Worth in 1994, he worked part-time for H&R Block. After 48 years of marriage and 41 years of service in education, Jim died suddenly last Friday in his home of a heart attack. He will be greatly missed by his students, friends and family. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank C. He is survived by his wife, Laura, of the home; two daughters, Eudelia ``Dell'' Gamez and her husband, Joe, and Debbie Cruz, one daughter-in-law, Carol E. SCHKADE Otto Ernest ``O.E.'' Schkade, 92, of San Angelo died Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, at his home after a brief illness. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Trinity Lutheran Church officiated by the Rev. Chester McCown with burial following in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. O.E. was born July 12, 1906, in Topsey to Ernest and Johanna Schkade. The family moved to Albany in 1907, where O.E. grew up and attended Lutheran schools. He had seven brothers and four sisters. After recovering from the partial removal of one lung when he was 18 years old, O.E. went to work in the oil fields. He drilled and produced oil wells all over east and west Texas, finally settling in San Angelo in 1950. O.E. met Lura Moseley Schkade in Colorado City, and they married Dec. 23, 1951, in Port Arthur. Jack was born Nov. 26, 1916, in San Angelo to J.C. and Elizabeth Ann Glauberg Springer. Mr. Springer was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Amy Jo Barringer Springer; and a sister, Beatrice Brown. Jack graduated from San Angelo High School and entered the FBI in Washington. He later joined the U.S. Air Force and was a decorated pilot during World War II. After the war, Jack and his wife, Jo, were founding members of the Lakeview United Methodist Church. Jack was one of the heroes of the 1938 flood. He was working at Troy Laundry at the time and was responsible for saving the lives of many of the people there. Later in life Jack was on the San Angelo School Board and was part of the team to have John Glenn Junior High built and was instrumental in getting Lake View and San Angelo School Districts consolidated. Jack worked for the U.S. Post Office until he retired and was a strong figure in his church. He was a firm believer in Jesus Christ and his family. Jones passed this life at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, at his home at the Carriage Inn Retirement Center in Katy after a lengthy illness. B.J. was born to James Monroe Jones Jr. and Rachel Hagar Jones on March 12, 1912, in Carbon, Comanche County. He attended high school in Putnam and Breckenridge, where he played football and graduated in 1930. On Dec. 14, 1936, he was married to Betty Ruth Taylor in Throckmorton. They moved to Crane, where B.J. worked for Gulf Oil Corp., retiring in March 1977. Upon retirement, he immediately was rehired by Gulf on a contract basis and worked as a well tester for seven more years, ending his service in March 1984. On Sept. 2, 1942, B.J. was inducted into the U.S. Navy and was sent overseas four weeks later on the submarine chaser No. 197 and served in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and through the Panama Canal into the Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged as a master machinist mate, first class. B.J. is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty Taylor Jones; sons, Michael T. Jones and his wife, Jeannine Blackwell-Jones, of Lexington, Ky., and Gregory W. Jones and his wife, Renee P. Jones of Katy. He also is survived by four grandchildren, Bettina of Lexington and Jennifer, Justin and Chelsie of Katy, along with numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. B.J. was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. We will cherish his loving kindness and treasure the special joy that he brought to our lives through his fun-loving spirited sense of humor. GERALD `JERRY' BULLOCK Gerald ``Jerry'' Bullock, 71, of San Angelo died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center Hospital in Big Spring. He married Laverne Sanderson on Feb. 12, 1946. They had four children. Jerry and Laverne operated Jerry's Burgers on Pulliam Street for 27 years. After a lengthy illness, he retired in 1994. He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry, in 1994. Survivors include his wife, Laverne Bullock; three daughters, Dolores Harris of Denver, Marilyn Holder of Euless and Tarina Whaley of Lubbock; a sister, Eula McCary of Odessa; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. MARY LOUISE WORLEY Mary Louise Worley went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Louise dedicated her life to caring for others. As such, she went into nursing training in 1961. She worked as a licensed vocational nurse at Shannon Hospital, St. John's Hospital and for 17 years at Goodfellow Air Force Base. She married William W. ``Red'' Worley in March 1948. They had three children, Barbara Jean, Billy and Donna Sue, who died at birth. They had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. Louise was a compassionate, caring woman who always thought of others before herself. She touched the lives of every person she met and blessed us with her presence for many years. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and loving wife. She loved the Lord and served him for more than 50 years. She will be missed but never forgotten. Survivors include her husband, Red Worley of San Angelo; two children, Billy Worley and Barbara Jean Melton; one son-in-law, Bill Melton; and two granddaughters, Mitzie Keeling and husband, Greg, and Becky Melton. RUSSELL L. `RUSS' DUERSTINE Russ was ushered into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998. Russ spent the last weeks of his life surrounded by friends and lovingly cared for by his family and Hospice of San Angelo at the home of his son. Russ had committed his life to the Lord Jesus Christ and was a member of the Christian Church of San Angelo. Mr. Duerstine was born Aug. 14, 1923, in Xenia, Ohio, the son of Roy and Anna (Huffman) Duerstine. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Joyce (Brownfield) Duerstine; one son and daughter-in-law, Russ and Nancy (Hite) of San Angelo; and one daughter and son- in-law, Mitzi (Duerstine) and Rick Fenner of Springfield, Ohio. He is also survived by his grandsons, Mat, Josh and Chris (Duerstine) of San Angelo; Roger Edmonds, adopted grandson, of San Angelo; Chris Fenner of Springfield; Bruce Duerstine Jr. of Springfield; and Tommy Duerstine of Tampa, Fla. Granddaughters include Sherry and Trish Duerstine of Tampa. Mr. Duerstine was preceded in death by his parents and by two children, Patty Jo and Bruce Allen Duerstine. He also was preceded in death by Joan Elizabeth Duerstine, mother of Mitzi and Bruce; and Opal Joan Duerstine, mother of Russ and Patty Jo. Russell was a decorated World War II veteran, who served his country in the Army Air Corps. He was a tail gunner in B-24s and served in the Italian Theatre. Besides his consummate love for the Lord, Mr. Duerstine was also an avid bridge player, bowler and chess player. Sports always had been a big part of his life, and he was a recipient of boxing's coveted Golden Glove Award at the age of 19. His lifelong dream to be a sports announcer never was realized, though he did provide sports commentary for his family on a regular basis. A celebration of Russell's life will be Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Christian Church of San Angelo,4064 S. Bryant Blvd. The body will be in the fellowship hall of the church from 1 to 1:45 p.m. The family invites friends to visit with them at that time. May was a member of the Sunset Ridge Church of Christ in Brady and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, known by all as ``Mamaw.'' She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren H. Nobles, and her son, W. Roy Cathey. Survivors include her daughter, Jean Cathey Hunt, and her son-in-law, Clyde B. McKnight, 79, of San Angelo passed away Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, at his home. Military cryptside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Mr. McKnight was born Oct. 23, 1919, in Eastland County, Texas. He was in the National Guard, the U.S. Army and Air Force for a total of 20 years. He received numerous medals, including the American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with Japan clasp, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation Emblem Eureux and Good Conduct medals during World War II while in Japan and France. He received the European, African and Middle Eastern Campaign medals with one Silver Service Star and received the Bronze Star for meritorious achievements in direct support of combat operations for the 1st Allied Airborne Army. Mr. McKnight participated in the Ardennes Alsace Campaign, the Central Europe Campaign, the Normandy Invasion, the Northern France Campaign, and the Rhineland Campaign. He retired from the 310th Organizational Maintenance Squadron as an airplane and engine mechanic. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Fredericksburg Chapter and an honorary member of the San Angelo Emergency Corps. He was a longtime resident of San Angelo and a member of the Harris Avenue Baptist Church, where he was the greeter on Sunday mornings. Mr. McKnight was an expert marksman and won numerous competitions. He was a great lover of birds and had thousands of his feathered friends visit him for their treat twice a day.
