MOUTOS Minelaos George Moutos, D.D.S., 69, of San Angelo died suddenly as a result of a brain hemorrhage on Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, in Shannon Medical Center. A Trisagion service was held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, at the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church with the Rev. James Hademenos officiating. A military burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Dr. Moutos was born Jan. 30, 1929, in Albuquerque, N.M., to Gust and Evangelia Moutos. His family moved to San Angelo in 1929, where his father Gust operated the Coney Island Cafe until his death. Dr. Moutos attended high school at New Mexico Military Institute as well as San Angelo High School. Before finishing high school, Dr. Moutos obtained the permission of his father and joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17. After a stint as a military policeman in San Diego, he shipped out with his unit to China where he spent 25 months. His unit assisted in the evacuation of Chiang Kai-shek, his staff, and family from mainland China to Formosa (now Taiwan). After leaving the Marines, though lacking a high school diploma, he was allowed, under the GI Bill of Rights, to enter San Angelo College, which he attended before moving to Texas Tech, where he obtained his degree in government and history, a pre-law preparation. He eventually gave up law for dental school at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Upon completion of dental school in 1963, Dr. Moutos completed internship at Beth-Israel Hospital in Boston, Mass., and an oral surgical residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He also completed graduate studies at Tufts University in Boston in 1970. Dr. Moutos was heard to reflect that he was reasonably certain he was the only high school dropout in America practicing oral surgery. Upon entering dental school, Dr. Moutos had been commissioned as an officer in the United States Naval Reserve, from which he ultimately retired as a captain. He was recalled to temporary active duty in 1988 and served at Gorgas Army Hospital in Panama City, Panama. He married Marie Kitsoulis on June 29, 1952. They were married 35 years until her death in 1987. They had three children, Eva Moutos-Choate of San Angelo, Dean Moutos, M.D., of Little Rock, Ark., and Ellen Moutos Lee of Austin. Following the death of Marie, Dr. Moutos married Carolyn Pate in 1992. Dr. Moutos was a widely respected oral surgeon and maintained a successful practice in San Angelo until an abortive attempt at retirement in 1995. Growing tired of ``sitting around and doing nothing,'' Dr. Moutos recently returned to the practice of oral surgery with William Buche, D.D.S., with whom he was practicing at the time of his death. He was a longtime member of the Parish Council of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church. He also was a member of the American Dental Society, the Southwest Society of Oral Surgeons and the American Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. In addition to his wife and three children, Dr. Moutos is survived by sons-in- law, Guy Choate and Kevin Lee; a sister, Catherine Broome and her husband, Jackson Broome; grandsons, Michael Choate, Christopher Moutos and Thomas Lee; granddaughters, Anne Marie Choate, Maria Moutos and Kerri Moutos; a nephew, Dr. Constantine Stewart; and stepchildren, Robert Pate and wife, Marilyn, and their children, Andrew and Allison; and Steve Pate and Greg Pate. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1937, his father in 1965 and his daughter-in-law, Dr. Doris George Moutos, in 1998. Dr. Moutos was loved and respected by his many patients and colleagues in the dental and medical professions. He will be missed. An extraordinary person, Mom and ``Guinnea,'' as she was know to her grandchildren, was adored by all. Cherishing family above all, she was the epitome of unconditional love. A lover of life, she taught so many valuable lessons that will be carried on through generations. Play with the kids and forget the housework; it will always be there. Eat dessert first, chocolate is a food group, and play Putt-Putt before homework. Lastly, you're never too young to ride a bike. Demonstrating remarkable talent, Toodle was an accomplished painter, writer and poet. Toodle's adventurous spirit led her down many paths. She flew with Continental Airlines as a stewardess, worked as a nurse, and designed and made clothing. She became a police dispatcher and performed accounting duties for businesses in later years. A Christian and Church of Christ,{per family} Toodle read her Bible daily and sought wisdom and humility. A lifetime learner, she absorbed information and coveted knowledge; however, the validity of some of her Scrabble words remains questionable. She loved to laugh. Full of jokes and pranks, her witty, enthusiastic approach to everything made her a joyous person and kept everyone laughing. Due to the contagious spirit of Toodle, there is a little bit of her in all of us. Mom, your little light still shines. She is survived by her husband, H.A. Caraway Jr. of San Angelo; a daughter, Laura Powell and husband, Dyron, of Houston; two sons, Trey Caraway and wife, Polly, of San Angelo and Andy Caraway and wife, Cindi, of Merkel; grandchildren, Dyron Powell Jr. and fiancee, Sharla Kleypas, Treyci Eyster and husband, Joe, Treyla Caraway, Christopher Caraway, Bailey Browder, Kate Caraway and Drew Caraway; a sister, Phine Brownd and husband, Gene; a sister-in-law, Dale Fulfer; numerous nieces and nephews; and ever- watchful Bugsy. We all know that your crown of stars should be akin to the milky way. We will seek your beacon when our roll is called.
