VIRGINIA SPECK LONGENETTE PFLUGER Virginia Speck Longenette Pfluger's life began Sept. 8, 1918, and ended Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998. Born in Eldorado to Charles and Vina Speck, Virginia lived in West Texas for all her 80 years, the past 42 of which were in San Angelo. After her mother died when she was only 4, Virginia lived in the outbacks of West Texas for eight years during the Depression when she was 11 to 18 years old. It was this informative and challenging time of her life that she developed her foundation of faith and values. Surviving off the land, Virginia was home-schooled by her father and stepmother, who taught her the importance and appreciation of God's gifts of nature - wind for the windmill to provide water for the crops. She married J.W. Longenette in 1942 and gave birth to two sons, Shad and Lowell. Her husband died in an accident in 1964, and she assumed the management of Longenette Flying Service for 11 years. In 1966, Virginia became the wife of Gillie Pfluger and a devoted mother to his children, Gary, Brenda and Gillene. She was an honored charter member of College Hills Christian Church, where she dedicated the past 32 years in unselfishly serving God and his children. Members refer to Virginia respectfully as the ``Church's Mother,'' as her spiritual example and influence contributed to the growth and development of the church and congregation. She was the first chairman of the board and first woman elder of the church. Virginia and Gillie owned ``The Continental House'' on David Street during the 1970s and provided the area with a unique collection of household items and gifts for all occasions. Virginia and Gillie were well known for the beneficial estate sales they conducted throughout the area during the 1980s. They delighted in discovering America together in numerous travels during their marriage. Her service to the community included serving on the board for Plaza del Sol, which was responsible for planning and building the new retirement centers in San Angelo. In addition, she was a board member for the Children's Emergency Shelter. She and Gillie also delivered Meals for the Elderly for years. Serving as an exemplary role model, her family and friends have been blessed in experiencing and learning from Virginia's belief in an ability to live by the Golden Rule: ``Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.'' Her loved ones consider Virginia to be angelic as she gave abundantly and lovingly of herself to others. Virginia is survived by her husband, Gillie Pfluger, a resident at Meadow Creek Nursing Center; her sons, Shad Longenette and wife, Evelyn, Lowell Longenette and wife, Cathy, and Gary Pfluger and wife, Cindy; and her daughters, Gillene Swain and husband, Ed, and Brenda McLain and husband, Ronnie.
