She received the Volunteer of the Year Award at Butt-Holdsworth Library in 1997. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Beers grew up in Bronte and was a faithful member of the Church of Christ. She had lived in Texas and Alaska before moving to Blythe. Services were conducted at the Blythe Church of Christ, and interment was in Palo Verde Cemetery. Mrs. Beers was preceded in death by her brother, William Loyd Wynne. She is survived by a daughter, Leiani Nichols of Anchorage, Alaska; a sister, Sibyl Parker of Blythe; two nephews, Bill Wynne of San Angelo and H. Lester Parker Jr. of Blythe; two nieces, Annie Jo Simmons of Katy and Sibyl Leah Miranda of Laredo; and three grandchildren. WAYLAND L. KELLERMEIER BALLINGER - Wayland L. Kellermeier, 88, of Miles died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, in San Angelo Community Medical Center at 2:35 a.m. Rosary was Thursday at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Miles. Service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 15, at St. Thomas Church with Father Stephen Kennelly officiating. Interment will follow in Miles Cemetery in Miles. Arrangements are by Rains-Seale Funeral Home. Mr. Kellermeier was born Oct. 6, 1910, in Miles to John and Annie Piepe Kellermeier. He was a farmer and rancher and a lifelong resident of Runnels County. He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and the Miles Knights of Columbus, Council 6811. He was married to Florence E. Steinbach on March 29, 1932, in Pinoak. She preceded him in death on Jan. 8, 1990. He is survived by a son, James Kellermeier of Miles; two daughters, Lorene Werner and her husband, J.C., of Miles and Betty Jo Gesch and her husband, Eugene, of Eola; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Trisagion service will be at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, in Robert Massie Riverside Chapel. Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church with the Rev. James Hademenos, pastor, and the Rev. Elias Greer officiating. Interment will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. She was born Feb. 20, 1934, in New York City, N.Y. She moved with her family to San Angelo in 1954. She and her husband owned and operated Charles Restaurant and Drive-In. In 1987 she co-founded with her sister Beys-Thigpen Realtors. She was a member of Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church. She was a loving mother, wife and grandmother. Rula is survived by her husband of 43 years, Tim Beys of San Angelo; two sons, George Beys and wife, Carla, and Sam Beys and wife, Maria, and their two sons, Michael and Alexander, all of Dallas; one brother, Nick Rakagis of Dallas; three sisters, Frances Thigpen and Betty Fenton, both of San Angelo, and Georgia Herndon of Gilmer; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. A special thanks to the doctors and nurses who assisted in Rula's care, and a special thanks to Family Hospice and the caretakers for all the loving care during her illness. FINIS `BILL' BATES Finis ``Bill'' Bates, 61, of San Angelo died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at his residence. Bill was born May 15, 1937, in San Angelo. He graduated from Modesto College in Modesto, Calif. He was involved with junior achievement for many years in California. He served with the Air Force National Guard for 10 years. He retired from EG&G-Reeco in Nevada. Bill married Donna Rogers on May 20, 1997, in San Angelo. He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Houston. Survivors include his wife, Donna Bates of San Angelo; and his stepfather, Alton Houston. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Christian Church of San Angelo. ALOIS ANTON GULLY BALLINGER - Alois ``Al'' Gully, 77, of Eola was released from the burden of his years to be with the Lord at 8:50 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999. Arrangements are by Rains-Seale Funeral Home. Al was born Feb. 9, 1922, in Runnels County to Frank J. and Agnes Gottschalk Gully. He attended school and farmed with his family in the Rowena area. He later served with the 158th infantry in the Philippines during World War II and with the occupation of Japan. After the war, he returned home and met his future wife, Marilyn Olivia Schott of Mason. They married on Aug. 20, 1954, and made their home near Eola, where they raised their family, farmed and worked honey bees. Al attended St. Phillip Catholic Church in Eola and was active with the F.O.E. of San Angelo, where he enjoyed the fellowship of his many friends. Al is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Eola; his son, Wayne Gully of San Angelo; hisdaughter, Margaret Elizabeth Gully of Eola; his brothers, Wilburt and Frank of San Angelo, Quentin of San Jose, Calif., Harvey of Rowena, the Rev. HENRY DRUE SCHMIDT Henry Drue Schmidt was born June 1, 1913, to Charles Joseph and Ona Beck Schmidt in Knickerbocker. Grosse Mohler of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Henry married Mary Lucile Atkinson, Oct. 20, 1939, in Bronte. One of nine children, he attended Knickerbocker schools and worked on area ranches until he went to work for Phillips Petroleum Company on a seismographic crew in 1944. He retired from Phillips in 1961 and returned to ranch in Knickerbocker and continued to ranch until his death. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of San Angelo, Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers' Association and the Woodmen of the World Society. Henry was a very dedicated rancher and he was happiest while tending his livestock and performing his daily ranch activities. He had many friends who enjoyed his company and his sense of humor, which henever lost, even during his illness. Henry loved his family and friends, and they were a constant comfort and joy to him. He was an excellent example of the phrase ``if you want to have a friend, be a friend.'' He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Carl Schmidt; and five sisters, Mildred Bennett, Minnie Moore, Lena Markley, Mamie Schmidt and Elizabeth Schmidt. Mr. Guthrie passed away in December of 1959. Anna's second marriage was to Sydney William Williams in 1970 and lasted for 11 years until his death in 1981. Mrs. Williams' parents were Aaron Burr and Florence Masters, who came to Comanche County from Alabama and were farmers. While living there, they produced five children, sometimes without the help of medical professionals. Anna's memories of childhood included a great deal of hard work on the farm and the years of simple Christmases, where the only presents many times might be only stockings filled with fruit and nuts. Always a voracious reader, Mrs. Williams enjoyed her schooling and could quote large portions of Caesar's ``The Conquest of Gaul.'' She also could name all of the books of the Bible. Anna also enjoyed reading western novels by Louis L'Amour and was a loyal fan of the soap opera ``As the World Turns'' for nearly 40 years. Anna enjoyed working in her yard on Coke Street, where she had resided since 1953. A graduate of Comanche County public schools and business college in Dallas, Mrs. Williams was employed as a secretary to the principal of San Jacinto Elementary from 1953 to 1957 and as a ward secretary at Baptist Memorials from 1962 to 1964. Anna was a member of the First Baptist Church in Comanche and the Immanuel Baptist Church in San Angelo. She is survived by one son, Paul David Guthrie of Maynard; one granddaughter, Sara Diana Guthrie of Pleasanton; a niece, Ann Masters of Cedar Creek; and one great-nephew, Rob Masters of San Angelo, along with numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family requests donations be made to Mrs. Williams' favorite charity, the American Lung Association. FAYE J. THOMAS COLEMAN - Faye J. (Mrs. Ralph) Thomas, died Friday (Jan. 15, 1999) in a San Angelo hospital. There will be no funeral or services. Arrangements were made by Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman. Faye was born Sept. 18, 1918, in White Oaks, N.M., to Mr. and Mrs. George Jeffrey, now deceased. Faye moved to Lubbockin 1935 to enter business school. After completing her education, she was employed by McMaken Motor Coaches and later TNM&O Bus Co. She married Ralph Thomas in 1941. In 1954, she moved with her husband to San Angelo, where she had lived since. Faye was an ardent Duplicate Bridge player, attaining life master status. Reading and teddy-bear collecting were her other interests. Survivors include her husband, Ralph, of San Angelo; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dr. Carlisle was born Nov. 7, 1928, in Cisco to Dr. Margil Clinton Carlisle and Hallie Fax Carlisle. He was a graduate of Augusta Military Academy and Baylor University. He received his master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin and his doctor of medicine from the University of Texas at Galveston. He did a double residency in surgery and orthopedics at John's Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. Dr. Carlisle served as a regular and reserve in the United States Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy. He was a veteran of the Korean War where he received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Navy Marines Medal, Purple Heart, Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citation and the secretary of the Navy Unit Citation. He also received the Civilian Medal of Freedom of Outstanding Service. Dr. Carlisle practiced medicine and surgery in Topeka, Kan., before returning to Texas in 1967 to enter private practice in Goliad. He moved to Ozona in 1969 where he practiced for many years before coming to San Angelo to the emergency room of St. John's Hospital through 1997. Most recently he had worked in the Indian Health Service Hospital on the Sioux Indian Reservation in the emergency room in Rosebud, S.D. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association and the Concho Valley Medical Society, of which he was vice president at the time of his death. Also, he was a life member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, which recently honored him for more than 30 years of practice of emergency medicine. Dr. Carlisle was a life member of the United States Marines Corps Association, the United States Naval Institute and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in San Angelo. Dr. Carlisle was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Fleur Thigpen Carlisle. Mr. Curtis was born June 12, 1914, in Hudson, N.Y., to George Curtis and Laura Hayes Curtis. He graduated from Adrian High School in Adrian, Mich., and Cleary Business College in Ypsilanti, Mich., as an accountant. He married Florence Rickerson in July 1940 in Denison. In 1942, he joined the Johns Manville Service Corp., operators of the Kansas OrdinancePlant at Parsons, Kan., as a property accountant. In 1945, he accepted a position as an accountant with the Texas Telephone Co. in Sherman. His success there was evident by his promotion to plant accountant in 1946. In 1948, Mr. Curtis accepted the position of auditor of the Fairmont Telephone Co. in Fairmont, Minn., and was elected assistant secretary of the company in the same year. While living in Fairmont, Oscar was a member of the Royal Arch Masons and treasurer and vestryman of St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Fairmont. Mr. Curtis and his family moved to San Angelo in 1956 and he became budget statistician for General Telephone Co., retiring in 1979. Mr. Curtis was a volunteer for Shannon Hospital Auxiliary since February 1980 and a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, where he served as a vestryman Sunday school teacher. Mrs. Livingston was born Sept. 18, 1904, in Menard County and was the first-born child on Waddell Ranch in Menard County. She had lived in San Angelo since 1972. She is survived by three sisters, Elizabeth Flowers of San Angelo, Dortha Williamson of Junction and Katie Somerford of Odessa; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Livingston in 1948. DON LEE CARLISLE, M.D. Don Lee Carlisle, M.D., died Saturday, Jan. 16 1999, at his home. Service was at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, at First United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Carl Rohlfs. Graveside service followed in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Ozona with the Rev. Grosse Mohler officiating. Arrangements were by Johnson's Funeral Home. Dr. Carlisle was born Nov. 7, 1928, in Cisco to Dr. Margil Clinton Carlisle and Hallie Fox Carlisle. He was a graduate of Augusta Military Academy and Baylor University. He received his master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin and his doctor of medicine from the University of Texas at Galveston. He did a double residency in surgery and orthopedics at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. Dr. Carlisle served as a regular and reserve in the United States Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy. He was a veteran of the Korean War, where he received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Navy Marines Medal, Purple Heart, Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citation and the secretary of the Navy Unit Citation. He also received the Civilian Medal of Freedom of Outstanding Service. Dr. Carlisle practiced medicine and surgery in Topeka, Kan., before returning to Texas in 1967 to enter private practice in Goliad. He moved to Ozona in 1969, where he practiced for many years before coming to San Angelo to the emergency room of St. John's Hospital through 1997. Most recently he had worked in the Indian Health Service Hospital on the Sioux Indian Reservation in the emergency room in Rosebud, S.D. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association and the Concho Valley Medical Society, of which he was vice president at the time of his death. Also, he was a life member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, which recently honored him for more than 30 years of practice of emergency medicine. Dr. Carlisle was a life member of the United States Marines Corps Association, the United States Naval Institute and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in San Angelo. Dr. Carlisle was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Fleur Thigpen Carlisle. MANDY WALL TURK SONORA - Mandy Wall Turk, a lifelong resident of Sonora, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born May 16, 1925, to Ed and Nellie K. Wall. Mandy worked hard throughout her life in a variety of jobs. She spent the last 15 years working as an Avon representative. A job she truly enjoyed, it gave her the opportunity to visit with her many friends. Sherrod leaves behind a great legacy of love and friendship to his family and friends. In 1993, following a lengthy illness, Sherrod was a recipient of a life-saving lung transplant and has since lived a full, productive and rewarding life. He touched many lives through his extensive business travels and was well loved by all who knew him. Survivors include his daughter, Sue Nell Marshall and husband, Vaughn, of San Angelo; two grandsons, Kevin and Keith Pool; his granddaughters-in-law, Janet, Lisa and Rhonda; five great-grandchildren, Myndee, Devin, Kyler, Lauren and Kelea; one sister, Pauline Etter of Lubbock; several nieces and nephews; and numerous friends. Pallbearers will be Harroll Clemmer, Pete McAdams, Charles Becker, Don Foster, Steve Sherrod and Don McKee. ROGELIO R. ESCOBEDO Rogelio R. Escobedo, age 65, of San Angelo died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, in a local hospital. A vigil service was at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, in Robert Massie Riverside Chapel. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Deacon Mario Torres officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are by Robert Massie Funeral Home. Rogelio was born on Sept. 16, 1933, in Sabinas, Coahuila, Mexico. He married Imelda Flores on June 4, 1960, in Morelos, Coahuila, Mexico. He moved his family from Ciudad Acuna in 1978 to San Angelo where he worked in the construction industry. He was preceded in death by a sister, Julia E. Chavarria, and a brother, Ramiro Escobedo. Survivors include his wife, Imelda F. Escobedo, his daughter, Maria Meza and her husband, Miguel, a son, Jose A. Escobedo and his wife, Estella, all of San Angelo; two sisters, Lydia E. Vasquez of Ciudad Acuna and Candelaria E. Davalos of Del Rio; two brothers, Gilberto Escobedo of Abilene and Jose B. Escobedo Sr. of San Angelo. Grandchildren are Jose A. Escobedo Jr., Michael Escobedo, Danille Escobedo and Miguel Meza Jr., all of San Angelo.
