STEWARD HAWKINS JR. Steward Hawkins Jr., 73, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999. He was born April 19, 1925, in Bonham, Texas, to Elijah Steward and Roxy Maude Hawkins. He graduated from Bonham High School, where he played varsity football and basketball and was his senior class president. Upon graduation, he served his country as a member of the 80th Infantry and 1st Infantry Divisions and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. At the end of the war, he served as a records clerk at the Nuremberg War Trials. After the war, he joined his parents in San Angelo, where he and his father established Hawkins & Son Battery Shop. He operated the battery shop until his retirement in 1989. He enjoyed a good reputation in the business community and with his customers. He married Marillyn Kuykendall of Cherokee, Texas, on Dec. 12, 1948, and started a family in San Angelo. In addition to raising a family and running his business, he served his community and especially the children of the community. He was active in Boy Scouts for over 30 years and served as the leader of Pack 32 and as Scoutmaster of Troop 332. Under his leadership, the troop grew to become one of the largest troops in the Concho Valley Council. At one time, he also served as the leader of a Girl Scout troop. He enjoyed a good reputation as a leader and conducted leadership training courses for new Boy and Girl Scoutmasters. He served as a deacon at the Johnson Street Church of Christ. He will be best remembered for the years he spent teaching the junior high school Sunday school class. He was a longtime member of the East Side Lions Club. In addition to the many service projects in which he participated, he served as president and in other capacities. His favorite office was that of ``tail twister.'' That job gave him more opportunity to pull pranks, make jokes and have fun. After his retirement, he and Marillyn moved to the ranch at Cherokee. He was a deacon in the Cherokee Church of Christ and helped support the Cherokee Children's Home. He also became a member of the San Saba Lions Club. He enjoyed a good time and liked to see those around him enjoy themselves. He loved to pull pranks on others and equally enjoyed receiving a good prank or joke in return. Although he was an avid hunter and fisherman, his first love was his family, his children, grandchildren, and any other child he happened to meet. He has had a profound effect on the children he taught in Scouting and in Sunday school. He led with love and by example. He exemplified the qualities of a Christian husband, father, businessman and leader. Although he will be greatly missed, he leaves behind his good name and wonderful memories of a good life, well spent in the service of others. He is survived by his wife and partner of 50 years, Marillyn Hawkins; his children, Steward Kirk Hawkins and wife, Reggie, Ann Watson and husband, Dave, Jan Hutchinson and husband, Jim, and Kay Clark and husband, John, all of San Angelo, and John Hawkins and wife, Joann, of Huauchinango, Mexico. He was especially proud of his grandchildren, Greg Hutchinson and wife, Christy, and great-granddaughter, Rebecca, Brian Hutchinson and his betrothed, Haley Dalgliesh, Eric Hutchinson and his betrothed, Shawna Wall, Jarrod Hutchinson, Mark Hutchinson, Lacie Hawkins, Alyssa Hawkins, Anna Hawkins, Heather Hawkins, Jill and Justin Stockman, Brandon and Kayla Clark, and David Watson Jr. and his children, Desirae, David III, Dana and Dani. He is also survived by his brother, Cleatis Hawkins and his children, Cleatis Hawkins Jr., Kathy Raesz and Karri Chauer, and his brother, Harvey Hawkins and his wife, Garlene, and their children, Jolena Miller, Roxella Doty and Ray Hawkins. A Father's Place From beginning to end and in between, He is there and will always be. For every child who comes on the scene There's a father he will see. Always working, supporting, and playing: Always there to comfort and care. Performing tasks without request and never saying Nor expecting praise or fanfare. When a child matures and by rite of passage Leaves home and goes as far as he can reach; Without knowing he carries a special message, One his father has given him to guide and teach. For he bears his father's mark, his lore, His words, example, and his love. For we all carry a part of him who's gone before And for that we thank our Father who's above. Memorials may be sent to the Cherokee Children's Home, Cherokee, TX 76832, The Boy Scouts of America, 104 W. River Drive, San Angelo, TX 76903, The House of Faith, P.O.
