LESTER HOWARD KIMBLE Senior Master Sergeant Lester Howard Kimble, United States Air Force, retired, died on Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, in San Angelo. Sergeant Kimble was born October 1917 in Chester, W.Va. After graduating from Chester High School, he worked briefly in a steel mill before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941. Sergeant Kimble served his country through three wars, with overseas service in the China-Burma-India Theatre of Operations during World War II in the Army Air Corps and later in the U.S. Air Force in New Mexico, Japan, California, Texas, Vietnam and Spain. During his 27 years of service to the nation, Sergeant Kimble served variously as a first sergeant, a personnel superintendent and a casualty affairs officer. He lived through a broad range of military operations, from running gun battle with bow and arrow-armed bandits on horseback in China in 1942; atomic bomb testing on Kwajalein Island in the Pacific; to personnel and manpower staffing in Vietnam. Upon retirement at Goodfellow Air Force Base in 1969, Sergeant Kimble was one of the first enlisted men to be awarded the then newly created Meritorious Service Medal for sustained meritorious service. To the hundreds of airmen he trained in his image, he was known, with respect and admiration, as the ``old sarge.'' He was a member in good standing in the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks Lodge, all in San Angelo. He chose to live in San Angelo when he retired because of his love for the west and wide open spaces. His last days were spent watching old John Wayne movies. IDA G. `KITTY' HANCOCK Ida G. ``Kitty'' Hancock departed this earth on Feb. 1, 1999, at the age of 55 after a courageous battle with cancer. She joins her father, mother and two brothers who are in heaven awaiting her. Kitty, as we all knew her, was born June 10, 1943. She spent most of her life caring for others as a nurse's aide. Kitty leaves behind three sons, a daughter and several grandchildren, who reside in North Carolina; her best friend and sister, Shirley Davis of San Angelo; sister Carolyn Wooten and brother, Ed Parrish, both of Winston Salem, N.C., along with several nieces and nephews. Words cannot express the appreciation we have for Family Hospice. The time and care provided to Kitty was beyond compare. An immense debt of gratitude also goes out to the wonderful staff of Baptist Memorials-Division 2, especially the nurse's aides who spoiled Kitty daily and strived to make her final days as best as could be. The family requests any donations be made to Family Hospice. No more pain and suffering. The Lord has called you home. Finally, finally ... you are free. I took his hand when I heard him call I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, to laugh, to love, to work or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way I found that place at the close of day. If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah, yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow. I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life's been full, I've savored much. Perhaps my time seemed all to brief. Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me God wanted me now, He set me free. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ HAROLD W. `BUDDY' CARNES Harold W. ``Buddy'' Carnes passed away Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at his home with the loving support of Hospice of San Angelo.
