EARL JOE BAKER PLANO - Earl Joe Baker, 93, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, at his home in Plano. Private services were Wednesday, Jan. 27, at Ted Dickey Funeral Home Chapel in Plano with the Rev. Foy Conrad officiating. Burial was in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in San Angelo. Mr. Baker was born Feb. 19, 1905, at the Baker homestead near Burkett in Coleman County. He was the first of five children born to Calvin D. and Maude Lee Baker. His hobbies always included outdoor activities, especially fishing and hunting with his coon dogs. His love for fishing would remain a lifelong passion. At the age of 15, Mr. Baker went to live with Vic and Ervin George, his aunt and uncle, to attend high school in Ballinger. The Georges, who had no children of their own, wanted him to help in their general merchandise store called ``The Hub.'' It was the beginning of his profession that would last eight decades. While attending Ballinger High School, Mr. Baker was a standout basketball player and helped the Bearcats win a state championship. After learning about the dry goods business, Mr. Baker went into partnership in the dry goods business with a close friend, Ross Black. The two men supplied uniforms for soldiers stationed at Bruce Field, an air base located outside Ballinger, during World War II. In 1948, Mr. Baker met and married Sarah Ridings, calling her ``the girl of my dreams.'' The couple was blessed with two daughters, Karen and Rebecca, and they eventually bought a home in San Angelo, just a short drive from Ballinger. When Ervin George decided to sell his store and retire, Mr. Baker purchased his uncle's business, which had become a top-of-the-line women's dress shop. In 1968, the Bakers moved to a ranch a short distance east of Ballinger, allowing Mr. Baker more time to fish and enjoy country life. Nonetheless, his top priority remained providing friendly service and quality merchandise in the dress shop. After he retired, the family moved to Plano. But, retirement didn't last long for Mr. Baker. He loved to sell and went to work for Nathan's, a department store owned by Nathan and Martha White. Mr. Baker worked for the Whites for 10 years until the store closed. Mr. Baker then went to work for Dillard's on March 7, 1986. He earned Dillard's Pacesetter awards for 1989, 1990 and 1991 in the men's sportswear department at the Collin Creek Mall. Dillard's also honored Mr. Baker for sales in excess of $2.5 million from 1986 to 1994. Mr. Baker retired from Dillard's after eight years of service at the age of 90. Earl and Sarah Baker celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Oct. 12, 1998, at a dinner in Plano hosted by their children. Mr. Baker was a charter member of the Ballinger Lions Club, which was organized in August 1928. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Park Heights Baptist Church in San Angelo. Mr. Baker was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Vera Nichols and Alma King. Mr. Baker is survived by his wife of the home; a daughter, Karen of Plano; a daughter and son-in-law, Beck and Murry Conrad of Plano; a brother, Robert C.
