He continued in oil and gas exploration as an independent, operating as Northington & Associates Inc. and explored for oil in Runnels, Tom Green and Duval counties for many years until his recent illness forced retirement. He continued doing work as a consulting geologist until the time of his last illness, working at home with his good companiondog, "Bear," a source of pleasure and contentment during the homebound years. He was educated in Ballinger public schools, graduating high school in 1946, and then attended NTAC in Arlington for one semester before volunteering for World War II service in the Army Air Corps. After serving in the Pacific on Okinawa, he was honorably discharged as sergeant in March 1946. He was an accomplished drummer and horn player on the baritone horn in high school, college and Air Corps bands. In high school, he organized and directed a dance band that played for the American Legion and other civic events and also for dances in Ballinger, Winters and San Angelo. His early band training was under a legendary music man, Homer Carsey, bandmaster of the Ballinger civic band, the "Cheery Booster Band" and then continued under the direction of the late Gurthal Gilligan in the Ballinger High School Bearcat Band, after the school district organized for band in 1937. He played, composed and listened to all kinds of music throughout his life and enjoyed the great Jim Cullum and his Dixieland jazz band on the Riverwalk in San Antonio for all the 11 years of his San Antonio residency. Jim Cullum was a friend. Mr. Northington was an Eagle Scout, fifth generation Texan, 10th generation American and a patriot who loved his family, friends, the oil patch and his country. God watched as you suffered, and knew you had your share. He gently closed your weary eyes and took you in his care. God has you in his keeping; We have you in our hearts. Your memory is our keepsake, and with that we'll never part. God saw you were getting tired and a cure was not to be, He put his arms around you and whispered, "Come with Me." With tearful eyes we watched you surrender and saw you fade away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best.
