Safely Home I am home in heaven, dear ones; All's so happy, all's so bright! There's perfect joy and beauty In this everlasting light. All the pain and grief are over, Every restless tossing passed; I am now at peace forever, Safely home in heaven at last. Did you wonder I so calmly Trod the Valley of the Shade? Oh, but Jesus' love illumined Every dark and fearful glade! And He came Himself to meet me On the way so hard to tread; And with Jesus' arm to lean on, Could I have one doubt or dread? Then you must not grieve so sorely, For I love you dearly still: Try to look beyond earth's shadows Pray to trust our Father's will. There is work still waiting for you, So you must not idle stand; Do your work while life remaineth- You shall rest in Jesus' land. When that work is all completed, He will gently call you home; Oh, the rapture of the meeting! Oh, the joy to see you come! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LYDIA RODRIGUEZ Lydia Rodriguez, 54, of San Angelo died Friday, March 19, 1999, at her residence. Kirksey was born in Rugby, Red River County, on Oct. 24, 1897. In 1904, the family moved to Wall in Tom Green County, arriving by train at the San Angelo Depot on Dec. 4, 1904. Late in the second decade of this century, bad weather and a succession of crop failures forced Ellis to seek work in San Angelo. His first job off the farm was delivering groceries for Trimble Grocery Co. In 1920, he began a career with automobiles that would span half a century. During that time, he worked for Young, Wiley & Bennett; Henderson & Ede Buick; Copeland Motor Co. (Anderson Jackrabbit); R.P. Amaker Motor Co.; and Schuch Motor. Ellis joined Ed Schuch on April 1, 1928, as a line mechanic and retired 431/2 years later as a car salesman. His honesty in dealing with customers, both as a mechanic and salesman, cultivated a great following resulting in many second- and third-generation customers. On July 11, 1925, Ellis and Gladys Lawson were married in San Angelo and remained together for 57 years until her death in 1983. Since 1920, Ellis was a member of the First Baptist Church in San Angelo and was a regular in the Goodfellow Class until just a few years ago. He was a 72- year member of the Knights of Pythias (Tom Green Lodge 46) and was a trustee of the Lake View Independent School District for nine years, during which time the district added new classroom facilities, built the current football complex and survived San Angelo's worst natural disaster - the 1953 tornado. Ellis Kirksey lived in and witnessed a remarkable evolution: from horse and steam power to atomic power; from wagon-rut roads to interstate highways; from flickering kerosene and candlelight to halogen lighting; from a man-in-the-moon to a man-onthe-moon. With his remarkable memory and vivid recall, he was able to recount incidents or events that reinforce what most of us could only read about in the history books. And, if it's not fact that you're interested in, he could cheer you up with a current tall tale or a refreshing joke. Survivors include one daughter, Annie Laura Hartman; four sons, Eugene Kirksey and wife, Maureen, Clarence Kirksey and wife, Bernice, Grady Kirksey and wife, Merle, and J.P. Kirksey and wife, Judy; and one daughter-in-law, Mary Kirksey. He was preceded in death by one son, Tommy Kirksey. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, 1999, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James M. Rogers and the Rev. Tom Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Paul Kirksey, Milam Jones, Ricky Kirksey, Charles Phillips, Chris Kirksey, Charlie Davidson, Mikel Hill, Steve Moore and Earl Castor. He passed from this world on Sunday, March 21, 1999, at Baptist Memorials Nursing Home. Service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 24, at the First Baptist Church in Eldorado. The Rev. Byron Orand of Community Baptist Church of Eldorado will officiate. Interment will be in the Eldorado Cemetery. Arrangements are by Kerbow Funeral Home. Orland was born in Buda, Texas, Dec. 1, 1909, to Daisy Beulah and Lucian Lilburn Harris. Orland came to Schleicher County with his parents and brothers by wagon in 1923. Orland and his family traveled many days hunting and living off the land. The Harris family became sharecroppers south of present-day Eldorado. Time passed, and Orland met Dorothy Lee King. He chose her to be his wife, and they were united in marriage Dec. 23, 1933. They left Schleicher County and moved to Stonewall County. Orland and Dorothy lived there for a short time, then moved back to Schleicher County, where they continued to live for 76 years. Orland worked at many occupations. He was a sharecropper, shearing crew cook, day worker and truck driver. Times were hard, and Orland was willing to do most anything to earn a living for his family. At one point, he worked for the county on the road crew, earning $1 per day. During this time period and beyond, Orland acquired the nickname of "Coon Dog." He would hunt raccoons and ring-tails at night. There were times the hunt would last all night, and Orland would return home with several raccoons. He would then sell the hides, which added to his earnings. Many hours of humorous stories were generated from Orland's "coon" hunts. During this period, two sons and one daughter were born to Orland and Dorothy, Alva Lee, Jimmy Wayne and Dorothy Arlene. Orland and Dorothy bought a "filling station" and ran it for some time. World War II broke out, and Orland was drafted into the Army. He was stationed at Los Angeles, Calif., where he contracted spinal meningitis. He was medically discharged from the Army in December 1946. When he returned home, he opened another "filling station," but this one had a cafe as well. This began the days of barbecuing with Orland's parents. The business grew, and Orland became well-known for his barbecue and his method of cooking. He and Dorothy cooked for the governor of Texas, Texas Sheriff's Association, political rallies and numerous family reunions. During this time period, a third son was born, Jackie Lynn. Orland was a member of American Legion Post 257 in Eldorado. He was very proud and humble to be a part of this society. He was also a member and deacon of the Fundamental Baptist Church, which later became the Antioch Baptist Church. Upon the closing of the Antioch church, Orland and Dorothy became members of the Community Baptist Church. Orland recently was honored with the title of deacon emeritus. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Melvin Harris and Milton Harris. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, three sons and one daughter. His sons are Lee Harris and wife, Ara, of San Angelo, Jimmy Harris, and Jackie Harris and wife, Becky, of Miles. His daughter is Arlene Payne of San Antonio. Orland was known as "Papaw" to 11 grandchildren, Robert Harris and wife, Rene, Scott Harris, Kirby Harris, Melanie Harris, Wayne Harris and wife, Celise, Gina Beckham and husband, Tommy, Todd Harris, Kim Adcock and husband, Alan, Marc Payne and wife, Pam, Jamie Kathleen Harris and Jenny Leigh Harris. Orland also had two stepgrandchildren, Dean Burns and Sheree Hardin and husband, B.C. Nine precious great-grandchildren blessed Orland's life as well. Orland also leaves several special nieces and nephews. Orland was many things to many people: husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, mentor and friend. He left many wonderful and happy memories that will be cherished for all time. Pallbearers will be Howard Ledbetter, Jim Martin, Mike Porter, Chip Cole, Wally Nichols and Buff Whitten. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons, as well as Dean Burns, Tommy Beckham, Alan Adcock and Verlon Edwards. The family requests memorials be made to Hospice of San Angelo, Community Baptist Church of Eldorado or a charity of choice.
