BRAUN The Rev. Father Serran R. Braun, pastor emeritus of Holy Angels Church in San Angelo, and retired chaplain of the San Angelo Police Department, passed away on Friday, March 26, 1999, in Shannon Medical Center, at the age of 71. The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the cathedral at 11 a.m. Monday, March 29, with the Most Rev. Michael D. Pfeifer, OMI, Bishop of San Angelo, presiding, assisted by his brother priests of the diocese. Interment with full United States Air Force and San Angelo Police Department honors will follow in the Priests' Section at Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson's Funeral Home. Serran Roland Braun was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Nov. 4, 1927, the third son of Otto and Rose Braun. He attended St. George parochial school in Cincinnati. Father Braun began his studies for the priesthood at the Franciscan Preparatory Seminary in Mount Healthy, Ohio. He received his bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1951 from the Franciscan Duns Scotus College in Southfield, Mich., and his degree in theology in 1955 from the Franciscan Holy Family School of Theology at Oldenburg, Ind. He was ordained to the Catholic priesthood as a Franciscan Friar on June 9, 1955. His first priestly assignment was as an assistant pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in San Angelo. Following that, he was sent to St. Mary of the Angels Parish in New Orleans as an assistant pastor. In the fall of 1958, he was commissioned as a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, and entered active duty in July 1959. His 22 years of continuous service to the nation as an Air Force chaplain included assignments at Glasgow AFB, Mont., Hamilton AFB, Calif., McChord AFB, Wash., Vance AFB, Okla., Lackland AFB, Tex., Lockbourne AFB, Ohio, the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., Mather AFB, Calif., Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, Peshawar, Pakistan, Udorn, Thailand and Karamursel, Turkey. His last USAF assignment was at Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, where he served as the wing chaplain. He retired from the Air Force with the rank of chaplain, lieutenant colonel, on March 1, 1981. Among his many decorations are the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf clusters, the Air Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf clusters, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm. Father Braun was incardinated as a priest of the Diocese of San Angelo on Oct. 18, 1968. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he returned to the Diocese, where he served as pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Eldorado from 1981-83, pastor of St. Therese Church in Carlsbad from 1983-86, and pastor of Holy Angels Church in San Angelo from 1986-93. He also served as acting director of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of San Angelo. He was appointed chaplain of the San Angelo Police Department on April 16, 1982. Father Braun retired from the active ministry on June 30, 1993. Even after his retirement, he frequently celebrated Mass in area parishes to assist his brother priests. Father Braun was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Howard, and his stepbrother, Linus. He is survived by his brother, Robert, of El Paso; seven nephews and nieces; and numerous grandnephews and grandnieces. Pallbearers will be members of the United States Air Force from the 17th Training Wing at Goodfellow AFB. Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of the Diocese of San Angelo, the San Angelo Police Department Honor Guard, and the Honor Guard of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. The family would like to thank the untold number of people who came to Shannon Medical Center, or who sent messages of love and support in prayer to Father Braun during his brief illness. They also wish to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Shannon for the tender loving care given to Father Braun. Most especially, the family wishes to thank Betty Taylor, R.N., his dear friend over the years, who was almost constantly at his side during his last days with us. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Angelo Catholic School or a favorite charity. WYNOMA LOUISE LIPPE KINGSLAND - The Lord Jesus Christ called Wynoma Louise Lippe to her heavenly home on Friday, March 26, 1999, in Kingsland. She was born April 24, 1930, to Emelia and William Hull in Rotan, Texas, and graduated from high school there in 1947. Wynoma married Paul Lippe Aug. 21, 1948, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Miles. They moved to Odessa in 1949 and Wynoma gave birth to a son, Gary Paul, in 1951. While living in Odessa, Wynoma taught kindergarten for 10 years at Redeemer Lutheran Church and School. In 1976 they moved to Alaska, returning to Texas in 1981 and made their home at Buchanan Dam where Wynoma became interested in arts and crafts. She worked with Kingsland House Arts & Crafts for about 10 years. Wynoma was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother to her husband, Paul of Buchanan Dam; her son, Gary Paul and his wife, Vicki, of Austin and grandson, Alton Paul and wife, Elizabeth, of Savannah, Ga., where he is serving in the Army. She was a faithful member of Holy Word Lutheran Church in Austin. The pastor Donald Patterson of Holy Word will conduct the service at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, in WaldropeHatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home Chapel in Kingsland. Bowman, 80, of San Angelo died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, March 28, 1999, at a local nursing care center. He was born Sept. 18, 1918, in Runnels County. He was a veteran of World War II and was service manager for car dealerships in San Angelo, Snyder and Austin. He was married to Mary Bess Parker Nov. 30, 1940, in Ballinger. He played softball and was voted the All-Star third baseman of the State of Texas. Obituaries BONNIE BRILEY WINTER Bonnie Briley Winter, 79, of San Angelo died Saturday, March 27, 1999, at 7:34 p.m. in a San Angelo hospital. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Lakeview Cemetery in Winters. Bonnie was born June 29, 1919, in Winters to Homer and Eunice Briley. Bonnie spent her working life in the banking business having started with First National Bank in Ballinger and then moved to the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Ballinger. Bonnie later moved to San Angelo and went to work for San Angelo National Bank and later retired from First City National Bank after having spent 35 years in banking. Bonnie married Lyle Winter April 17, 1943, in Coleman and they are members of Immanuel Baptist Church. Bonnie was preceded in death by her first husband, Johnnie Minzenmayer and her children, Jerry Sue Minzenmayer and Patsy Ann (Smith) Fluitt. CLARA BELLE PHILLIPS HODGES SAN MARCOS - Clara Belle Phillips Hodges of San Marcos was born May 26, 1904, in Galveston to Butch and Maude (Revia) Bouse. She died in San Marcos on Monday, March 29, 1999, at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Douglas Hodges (1966), to whom she was married for 40 years. She is survived by one son, Douglas Porter Hodges and wife, Georgia, of Ringling, Okla.; one daughter, Iris Riddle and husband, Alvin, of San Marcos; one sister, Annice Proctor of Amarillo. Service will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. A.J. Kennemer of Edmund Boulevard Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Anna was born Jan. 26, 1917, in Marlin to James Harvey and Winnie Smith. She married Aubrey "Darky" Knight Dec. 21, 1940, in Richland Springs. Anna and Darky moved to San Angelo in 1950 where they owned East Side Grocery. In 1966, they became associated with Town & Country Convenience Stores where Darky was a manager until his death in 1973. Anna continued to manage the store on Harris and Bell until her retirement in 1983. After she retired, Anna became full-time grandma to her two grandchildren, often being taxi, nurse, sports fan and playmate to them. Everyone knew they were the shining lights in her life. Anna was a longtime member of Harris Avenue Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Darky; sister, Mary Lou Hudman Gray; brother, Jimmie Smith; and an infant daughter, Nita Louise. Survivors include one daughter, Aubrey Ann Petty and husband, Dan, of Paint Rock; grandson, Ashley Petty and granddaughter, Courtney Petty, both of San Angelo; nephews, Paul Hudman and wife, Wanda, and their children, Mark and Becky, of San Angelo, Gary Hudman of Houston, Jim Smith of Dallas, Sam Knight and wife, Lou, of Big Spring; sistersin-law, Inez Smith of San Angelo, Betty Ruth Johnson of Brownwood and Velma Ruth Lloyd of San Angelo. Alpha Jo married John David Armstrong on Feb. 9, 1947, in the First United Methodist Church in Big Lake. The Armstrongs made their home and raised their family in Big Lake. Mrs. Armstrong was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Armstrong; her parents, Joe and Arlisse Elliott; and two sisters, June Marie Jameson and Helon Viola "Pitty" Arnett.
