Cowboy's Prayer Oh, Lord, I've never lived where churches grow; I've loved creation better as it stood That day You finished it so long ago, And looked upon Your work and called it good. Just let me live my life as I've begun! And give me work that's open to the sky; Make me a partner of the wind and sun, And I won't ask a life that's soft and high. Make me as big and open as the plains, As honest as the horse between my knees, Clean as the wind that blows behind the rains, Free as the hawk that circles down the breeze. Just keep an eye on all that's done and said; Just right me sometime when I turn aside, And guide me on the long dim trail ahead That stretches upward toward the Great Divide. - Author Unknown ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Funerals/Death Notices 5/2/99 TODAY SAN ANGELO - Otis Del McAllister, 73, at 2 p.m. in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel; graveside service in Evergreen Cemetery in Ballinger. Bob was a very dedicated, loving father and friend to his wife and children. We thank God for the 44 years he was given to us. We don't know why God chose to take him from us in the prime of his life. One thing we do know - he is with the God he knew and loved, and those of us that share that God will join him someday. Bob's greatest desire in life was to know that those family and friends he loved so much would know God as he did. MAE McCOY ANDREWS Mae McCoy Andrews died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 96 at Meadow Creek Nursing Center on Sunday May 2, 1999. She was born Nov. 11, 1902, in Fort Worth. Her parents, Thomas Luther and Leona Jane Ford McCoy, raised one son and five daughters. Because of the challenging times in the '20s, Mae began working as a secretary upon highschool graduation in order to contribute to her family's needs. Contrary to a woman's traditional role at that time, her career spanned more than 45 years, and she became quite an independent lady. Mae loved the business world, especially being an executive secretary to a Dallas entrepreneur. For more than 30 years, she assisted him in initiating numerous businesses in Dallas and Houston. She regretted her inability to be a part of the computer generation because of poor eyesight. However, blessed with a sharp mind, Mae remarkably kept up with the news and stock reports every day of her adult life. During their short marriage, Mae and her husband, Ray, had two children, Eugene and Carol. She outlived her precious daughter, who died during an appendectomy at age 7 and her faithful son, Gene, who passed away at age 56 with emphysema. Family life was a primary focus and pleasure of Mae's. She helped her mother raise younger brother and sisters and treasured her memories of growing up next door to her grandparents in north Fort Worth. After a sister's death, she nurtured niece Shirley and nephew Pete. When Shirley became widowed with young children, Mae lent a helpful hand in caring for and loving her greatnieces and nephew. As her sisters grew older, she was honored to be able to tend to their needs. One of her popular pastimes was preparing special meals for big family gatherings, and what a fantastic cook she was! Family members are grateful for her constant devotion and tender loving care. After retirement, Mae experienced immense pleasure in gardening her beautifully landscaped home in north Dallas. Her "green thumb" produced an abundance of flowers year-round for neighbors, friends and family to enjoy. She frequently commented that she felt closest to God while working in her garden, and that was her time of prayer and meditation. Mae leaves a legacy of remarkable optimism to her loved ones. She lived happily, laughing often, truly believing and accepting everything in life happens for the best and taking the most hopeful view of any challenging situation. After being a devoted caregiver to so many, she was blessed with good health and contentment in her latter years, asking for very little and always showing appreciation for the loving care she received from her family and the staff at Meadow Creek Nursing Center. Mae's wonderful sense of humor and independence remained even after her eyesight and hearing were minimal. On her 94th birthday, she asked for a motorized wheelchair so she could be as independent as possible. As she streaked down the halls of Meadow Creek to her favored bingo games, everyone quickly stepped aside! Preceding Mae in death were her parents; husband; four sisters; one brother; daughter, Carol; son, Eugene; great-grandson, Justin Penrod; and niece, Shirley Rose. Survivors include her daughterin-law, Gillene Andrews Swain; granddaughters, Kathi Penrod and Denise Gregory; and grandsons, Ken Andrews, Jim Andrews and Eric Castleberry. Also surviving are her nephew, Pete Axline; great-nieces, Janet Wadkins, Carol Griffith, Suzanne Reder, Sharon Axline, Diane LeSan and Jeanine Corbett; and great-nephews, Jim Rose and David Axline. In addition, nine great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-nieces and greatgreat-nephews survive.
