Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, at Park Heights Baptist Church with Dr. James Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Kelli was born Nov. 4, 1961, in Corpus Christi to John and Johanna Roscher Smith. She graduated from H.M. King High School in Kingsville in 1979 where she was co-drum major for the prestigious King High School Band. Kelli received her bachelor's degree from Texas Christian University and her master's degree from Texas A&I University. Kelli taught school at San Benito, Riverside-Fort Worth, New Deal and was presently a teacher at Cornerstone Christian School in San Angelo. Kelli was baptized at First Christian Church in Kingsville. She had been an active member along with her family of Bedford Christian Church, Bacon Heights Baptist Church in Lubbock and presently at Park Heights Baptist Church in San Angelo. Kelli will be long remembered for her quickness to take charge when she saw a need, and as a lady who saw her greatest accomplishment as being a wife and mother. Her husband John remembers her as a wonderful wife, mother and friend. He says it is our loss and Heaven's gain. Survivors include her husband, John F. WILLIAM BARNES WARNER AUSTIN - William Barnes ``Bill'' Warner, 30-year resident of Austin, passed from this life at 3:15 a.m. on Sunday, June 6, 1999, in Seton Hospital. Bill lived a full and productive life; he was a loving husband and father and a dear friend to many. With remarkable compassion and energy, he gave generously of his time and material resources, to family, friends and anyone in need, especially senior citizens. Rooted in his Christian faith, he was very active in the Methodist church throughout his life. In Austin, he and his wife, Jean, were named Most Worthy Citizens in 1987, in recognition of their extensive volunteer work on behalf of senior citizens. Bill was a founder, and a driving force behind, the non-denominational Christian Adult Fellowship at Tarrytown Methodist Church, where he was an active member. He was also an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Austin, Golden ``K.'' In San Angelo, where he lived for 27 years before moving to Austin, he was very active in church and community affairs, as well as a very successful businessman. In both Austin and San Angelo, he was an enthusiastic member of the church choir as well as various community choruses. Bill was born Nov. 9, 1913, in Wellington, Kan., to Civil War veteran William Carter Warner and Jessie Barnes Warner. He graduated from Wellington High School in 1931 and from Kansas State University in 1936, with a degree in engineering. In 1939, he married his longtime high school sweetheart, Jean Mitchell, and the newlyweds moved to Texas. Early in his lifelong career in construction (1945), he founded Warner Construction Company in San Angelo, a general construction company, and ran it very successfully for 20 years, during which time the company built a number of schools, hospitals, office buildings and churches. In Austin, he worked as a building superintendent for Carter Homes and Thomas Brothers until his retirement in 1991. Survivors include his wife, Jean of 59 years; a brother, Bob Warner of San Angelo; a son, David Beekman and wife, Mary, of Belmont, Mass.; a daughter, Karen Martin of Lockhart; four grandsons, Clint Martin, Marty Martin, Andrew Warner and Robin Warner; and two great-grandchildren, Melek and Metin Martin. There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, at Tarrytown Methodist Church in Austin. This precious mother and grandmother was born Oct. 11, 1939, to Charles Ray and Kathlyn Hope Hedges in Lubbock. A lifetime resident of Lubbock before moving to San Angelo in 1977, Beth was a devoted secretary and had worked the last 19 years for the law firm of Logan, Lewis, Symes and Keeling. Above all she was a loving mother and a devoted grandmother to her surviving four grandchildren as they were the apples of her eye. Beth also is survived by her father, Charles Ray Hedges of Lubbock. She will be missed greatly by her son, Robert Ray and wife, Diedra, of San Angelo and by her daughter, Belinda Gay Johnson and husband, Terry, of Farmington, N.M. She was born Jan. 10, 1921, in San Angelo to Carl Cromwell and Luella Lunsford Cromwell. Her father was a pioneer West Texas wildcatter who drilled the Santa Rita No. 1, the discovery well of the Permian Basin Oil Field. She spent her early years in the oil fields around Texon, Texas. Her family later moved to San Angelo where she attended school, graduating from San Angelo High School. She attended the University of Texas. After her children were in elementary school, she returned to Texas Woman's University and received her teaching credentials. She taught for several years at Daugherty Elementary School in Garland. She is survived by her children, Carl and Linda Peavy of Garland and Judy Peavy Boreham of Fort Smith, Ark; her four grandsons, Richard Alexander of Tulsa, Okla., Greg Peavy of Fort Worth, Bill Alexander of Tulsa and Chris Peavy of Dallas; and her two great-granddaughters, Rachel and Renae Alexander of Tulsa. She was a longtime and active member of the First United Methodist Church of Garland. She also was active in numerous clubs and organizations. Edwin Smith Draughon Sr., 71, of San Angelo died Friday, June 4, 1999, of lung cancer. Mr. Draughon attended Southwestern State University and Southern Methodist University. He received a bachelor's degree in general business in 1959 and pursued graduate studies in public administration at the University of Oklahoma. After completing military service with the Navy, Mr. Draughon worked for the MK&T Railroad. In 1965, he began a long and distinguished career with the Social Security Administration. He was the assistant district manager of the San Angelo Social Security office for more than 20 years, during which time he received numerous awards for sustained superior performance. Mr. Draughon served as a member of the Rotary International for more than 40 years. He also was a member of Toastmasters International and a devout member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Mr. Draughon was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Ellen, as well as two brothers, Drs. William and Eugene. His beloved daughter, Catherine Diane Draughon also preceded him in death. Mr. Draughon is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jane Draughon; a brother, Frank Draughon of Ardmore, Okla.; and children, Ellen Suzanne Draughon of New York City, Edwin Smith Draughan Jr., M.D., of Vernon and Joseph Alexander Draughon of Coral Springs, Fla. Gene was a former grand master of the Knights of Pythias, a former noble grand and district deputy grand master of the Odd Fellows Lodge and a member of the American Legion. Gene married Gertrude Scott on July 29, 1943. She preceded him in death on April 2, 1977. He married Bessie Asbill on June 23, 1979. A daughter, Ellene Virginia Castleberry and a granddaughter, Amy Celeste Clayton, also preceded him in death. Major Danovsky was killed in action in August 1944. Etta never remarried. Her parents and two brothers, H.W. "Red" Brennan and James T. Brennan preceded her in death. Etta worked as an executive secretary for the Zia Corp. at Los Alamos during the late 1940s and early 1950s, and then for Pan-Tex and various contractors with the Atomic Energy Commission at Rocky Flats, Colo., before her retirement to Abilene in 1977. She moved to San Angelo in 1992. Gene was born Aug. 7, 1912, to Earl and Maud Castleberry in Hillsboro. He was a Navy World War II veteran, owned and operated Castleberry Paint Co. and was a charter member of College Hills Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years. Gene was a former grand master of the Knights of Pythias, a former noble grand and district deputy grand master of the Odd Fellows Lodge and a member of the American Legion. Gene married Gertrude Scott on July 29, 1943. She preceded him in death on April 2, 1977. He married Bessie Asbill on June 23, 1979. A daughter, Ellene Virginia Castleberry, and a granddaughter, Amy Celeste Clayton, also preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Bessie Castleberry of San Angelo; a son, Eugene Earl Castleberry and his wife, Norma, of Coppell; a daughter, June Clayton and her husband, Glenn, of Lubbock; a son, Marvin Asbill and his wife, Carol, of San Angelo; and a daughter, Mollie Wright of San Angelo. The family suggests memorials be made to College Hills Baptist Church or a favorite charity. FRANKIE BETH NELSON Dr. Frankie Beth Nelson died of cancer at her home in San Angelo on June 9, 1999. She was born May 27, 1926, to Frank Strom, a third-generation Swedish- American, and Zelma Hayley Strom, a descendant of early West Texas settlers. She grew up in Robert Lee and Snyder. Education was a central focus in Dr. Nelson's life. She attended Wildcat School near Robert Lee and graduated from Ira High School in Ira, Texas. She attended Texas State College for Women (now TWU) and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Texas (Austin). She taught in public schools in Bronte, Austin and San Antonio and in Vallejo, Calif., and Tulsa, Okla. She later studied educational anthropology at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she obtained her doctorate degree. Dr. Nelson's career included work as a research assistant with Teachers for East Africa Project in Uganda, Kenya and Tanganyika; as a trainer for community development workers at Action for Appalachian Youth in Charleston, W.Va.; and a long tenure as assistant professor at Queens College of City University of New York. While there she participated in the School-University Teachers Education Program. She worked with the BUILD Academy in Buffalo, N.Y., and she held various terms as a consultant to the Teachers Education and Professional Standards Committee of the National Education Association. She served as adjunct professor at the University of Kentucky, the University of Hawaii and Adelphi University. She was a Fellow of the Society of Applied Anthropology and a member of the American Anthropological Association, Pi Lambda Theta and Kappa Delta Pi. After retiring from Queens College in 1985, she moved to San Angelo, where she began a new research interest in Native Americans. She shared this interest with schoolchildren and interested adults. She participated in the organization of the Tom Green County Adult Literacy Council, tutoring six students and training many tutors and tutor-trainers. She served as a volunteer at the San Angelo Nature Center and Fort Concho Museum, the Children's Art Museum and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts. She served on the board of the Tom Green County Library and was its lay representative to the Big Country Library System. She was a member of Readers P.S. and the Sierra Club. Survivors are her daughter, Kristina Chandler, and her grandsons, Frank and Robert Chandler, all of San Angelo; her sister, Carol Hodge and husband, Michael, of San Antonio; brothers, W.L. ``Bill'' Strom and wife, Nancy, of Copan, Okla., and Hubert Strom and wife, Mary, of Fort Worth; nieces and nephews, Jeanne Poulten, John Strom, Marcy Smith, Bruce Strom and Scott Strom; and many cousins, among whom are Mary Love Berryman of Tyler, Zelma Rodgers of Dallas, Dot Horcher of Diamond Bar, Calif., and Vivian Fields of San Angelo. Mr. Draughon attended Southwestern State University and Southern Methodist University. He received a bachelor's degree in general business in 1959 and pursued graduate studies in public administration at the University of Oklahoma. After completing military service with the Navy, Mr. Draughon worked for the MK&T Railroad. In 1965, he began a long and distinguished career with the Social Security Administration. He was the assistant district manager of the San Angelo Social Security office for more than 20 years, during which time he received numerous awards for sustained superior performance. Mr. Draughon served as a member of Rotary International for more than 40 years. He also was a member of Toastmasters International and a devout member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Mr. Draughon was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Ellen, as well as two brothers, Drs. William and Eugene. His beloved daughter, Catherine Diane Draughon, also preceded him in death. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OBITUARIES SAMUEL COLLINS SAYNER BRONTE - Samuel Collins Sayner was born Nov. 21, 1899, in Tennyson, Texas, on the ranch where his grandfather settled and where he was raised by his parents, Darwin E. and Katie Ainsworth Sayner, in Coke County. He went on to the place God has prepared for him on June 11, 1999. Collins told us all that he had a wonderful life living on the Sayner Ranch more than 99 years. Having assumed much of the responsibility of managing the ranch at an early age, Collins moved his wife, Maggie Hearrell Sayner, into the former home of his grandfather, Samuel Sayner, who came to Coke County in 1882. They continued to raise livestock and farm for 75 years. Before her death in 1998, Collins spent many years caring for her and continuing to raise black Angus cattle. He was able to manage them using his pickup after giving up riding horseback. Collins was active in the Coke County area as well as in San Angelo. One favorite memory was of the La Paloma dance club which he and Maggie helped organize. Collins is survived by his brother, Frank Sayner of Granbury, Texas; his nieces, Judith T. Bond of San Angelo and Patsy S. Keene of Weatherford; his nephew, Frank Sayner of Ruidoso, N.M.; and seven great-nieces and great- nephews. DON HAMILTON MIDLAND - Don Hamilton, after a long and heroic battle with cancer, finally went to be home with his Lord on Wednesday, June 9, 1999, in Houston, Texas. He was born to John F. and Bertha Hamilton on June 5, 1933, in Robert Lee, Texas. Preceding him in death were his parents and sisters, Jesse Hurley, Faye Eubanks and Lois Adams. Don married Shirley Jo Young of San Angelo on Feb. 7, 1953. Always known as "Ham," after graduation from Robert Lee High School in 1951, he joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed aboard the USS Alstede AF-48 during the Korean War. After serving for four years, he was honorably discharged and then moved his family to Odessa. Living there and in Hobbs, N.M., they settled in Midland in 1961. Being in the oil business throughout this area, he opened Hamilton Production Equipment in 1980, until his retirement in 1998. Known as the "Jellybean Man" to the children of his church, he loved life, family and friends. He was ever present at his grandchildren's activities and always available to volunteer whenever needed whether it was at the soup kitchen or committees within his church. He enjoyed many hobbies, some of which included woodworking, hunting and his beautiful Longhorn cattle. He is survived by his wife and lifelong companion, Shirley Hamilton of Midland; son, Walt Hamilton and wife, Lexa, of Katy and daughters, Donna Finn and Kim Carter and husband, Gilbert, of Midland; three brothers, Claude Hamilton and Melvin Hamilton, both of Roswell, N.M., and John F. She was born April 9, 1916, in Burnet. She was a homemaker and a member of Southgate Church of Christ. Lea Weeks KERRVILLE - Lea Belle Weeks, 89, died Friday, June 11, 1999, in a local hospital. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Arrangements are by Overby Funeral Home. She was born Nov. 17, 1909, in Victoria and had been a resident of Kerrville since 1989. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church. Nicolas Fuentes MARFA - Nicolas Ruben "Nick" Fuentes, 70, of Presidio died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at his residence. Rosary will be at 8 p.m. today at Santa Teresa Church in Presidio. Service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shafter with burial in Shafter Cemetery. Arrangements are by Memorial Funeral Home. He was born Oct. 18, 1928, in Shafter and was a lifetime resident of Presidio and Shafter. He worked in construction, ranching and as a supervisor for the Texas Highway Department and was a Catholic. Tino Martinez SONORA - Tino Martinez, 54, of Sonora died Sunday, June 13, 1999, in a San Angelo hospital. He was a truck driver and a Catholic. He was born April 3, 1913, in Poth and had been a resident of Big Spring since 1981. He was a farm laborer and a Baptist. Services are pending at Johnson's Funeral Home. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OBITUARIES FRANCIS WILEY McGEE Francis Wiley McGee, 82, of San Angelo died Sunday, June 13, 1999, in a local hospital. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Fairmount Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Mr. McGee was born Aug. 17, 1916, in Pickens County, Ala., near Gordo to Francis Marion McGee and Stella Ann (Elmore) McGee. He attended Pickens County public schools and the day after Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 8, 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served his country on board the USS Massachusetts from 1942 to 1945. Mr. McGee went to work for the San Angelo Telephone Co. in 1936, which later became GTE and retired in 1973 after 36 years of service. He married Joan Lamb Arnold in 1952 and she preceded him in death in 1973. Mr. McGee was the past president of the Elks Lodge and had attended the First Baptist Church. Survivors include three sons, Marvin Arnold and Chris Arnold, both of San Angelo, and Joe Arnold of Nashville, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Mark Taylor, Rene Duke, Bret Arnold, Brenda Arnold, Becky Sullivan and Amber Arnold; three great-grandchildren; five brothers, Albert McGee, Eugene McGee, Bill McGee and Marshall McGee, all of Gordo, Ala., and Millard McGee of Marshall; one sister, Velma Maughn of North Port, Ala.; and many nieces and nephews. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
