With tearful eyes we saw you suffer, and watched you fade away. Although we love you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating - hard-working hands to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. It's lonesome here without you - we miss you more each day. Life doesn't seem the same, since you have gone away. When days are sad and lonely, and everything goes wrong. We seem to hear you whisper, ``Cheer up and carry on!'' Each time we see your picture, we seem to hear you say, ``Don't cry. I'm in God's hands, we'll meet again someday!'' A million times we've missed you, a million times we've cried. To Mama I got a letter from Mama today, and she didn't really have much to say, but when times are hard and life gets rough, just her name on the envelope's more than enough. It means a lot to me to know she's there to listen to my troubles, to say a little prayer, and she's the only one who seems to understand when my head's in the clouds and there's no place to land. She doesn't condone all the things that I do, and I guess I never really expected her to, but she's quick to forgive and her love will still show, but, then, she can't help it, she's a mama, you know? I often don't stop to consider the fact that unlike my letters, hers are written with tact. She doesn't complain of the troubles she's got, the hard times and problems that I know visit a lot. Mama and I, we've had good times and bad, times rich with laughter, and times that were sad, and regardless of life's let-downs and many small lifts, she'll always be Mama, one of life's greatest gifts. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ANDREA JASSO ZAPATA Andrea Jasso Zapata, 71, of San Angelo died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at her residence. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Funerals/Death Notices 7/28/99 TODAY SAN ANGELO - Laura Mae McEwen Brown, 60, at 2 p.m. in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel; burial in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. MARIE GERBER MIMS Marie Gerber Mims died peacefully Thursday afternoon, July 29, at her San Angelo home. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 31, in the chapel of the First United Methodist Church in San Angelo. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Mrs. Mims, born June 22, 1902, was the youngest daughter of John and Rosa Wenger Gerber, Swiss-born new Americans who came to San Angelo in the mid-1880s. The Gerbers made their home on North Main Street amid the town's large German-speaking population. John Gerber, with his brother, Fred, launched the town's first soft-drink factory, the San Angelo Bottling Works. John Gerber died suddenly in March 1912. Rosa Gerber and her youngest children returned briefly to Switzerland for a visit. Mrs. Mims often recounted their return voyage along the same sea lane where the Titanic had gone down short months before. Always an eloquent correspondent and story teller, Mrs. Mims wrote a memoir, ``Main Street Memories,'' for her grandsons shortly after her 95th birthday. It vividly described life in young, growing San Angelo just after the turn of the century. Marie Gerber Mims was graduated from San Angelo High School and attended college at Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos. She was the first of her family to graduate from high school and attend college. In the late 1920s, she was hired to teach at the one-room Walnut School in Coke County, where she boarded with parents of her pupils. One of her bright students was the youngest sister of Elton Mims, the man whom she later was to marry. In the early 1930s, Mrs. Mims was secretary and bookkeeper for B.B. Hail's West Texas Lumber Co. on the northwest corner of Twohig and Oakes. Hail, along with Conrad Hilton, helped launch the Cactus Hotel on the site. One of the highlights of Mrs. Mims' young adult life was attending the Chicago World's Fair in 1934 with her sister, Ida, and a large delegation from San Angelo's Business & Professional Women's Club. Marie Gerber and Elton Mims were married at sunrise on Easter Sunday, April 21, 1935, in the First Presbyterian Church in San Angelo. For the next 40 years, they made their home on the family's Knapp Ranch near Water Valley in Coke County, which Mr. Mims operated for his father, J.R. Mims, and later in partnership with his sister and brother-in-law, Lonnie and Paul Coulter. In the 1970s the Mimses established residence in San Angelo. Both Mr. and Mrs. Mims were faithful members of the Methodist Church in Water Valley and San Angelo and often were delegates to state, national and world conferences. In 1966, after attending a world Methodist meeting in London, they took a side trip to Switzerland. Revisiting the country she had not seen since 1912, Mrs. Mims retraced the Gerber ancestral roots in the city of Thun, south of Bern on the Aare River and re-established contact with her Swiss cousins. Mrs. Mims was preceded in death by her husband, Elton Mims; by her sister, Ida; and by her brothers, Rudolf, Herman and Fred. She is survived by a daughter, Rosemarie Sue Mims of San Angelo; her son, Robert Elton Mims and daughter-in- law, Joyce, of Upper Montclair, N.J.; two grandsons, Michael Robert Mims of Venice, Calif., and John William Mims of Williamsburg, Mich.; her beloved nieces, nephews and cousin; her faithful sisters-in-law, and her devoted caregivers and special Hospice friends, each of whom became an inseparable part of her family. Marie Mims is remembered by her friends and family as a person of abiding faith who daily put her beliefs into action. She was a generous hostess, a joyful camper and dancer, a fierce card player, an intuitive solver of ``Jumble'' puzzles, and a skilled and tenacious organizer, who faithfully followed each day's news and each important election as well as her beloved Dallas Cowboys. Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of San Angelo, 36 E. Twohig, San Angelo, TX 76903 or to programs for children and youth directed by local area churches. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
