Now there is in store for me the crown of the righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award me on that day, not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.'' - 2Timothy 4:7-8 ZOILA FLORES GUERRERO Zoila Flores Guerrero, 83, of New York passed away Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, in Fort Worth. She was visiting in Fort Worth when she suffered a stroke. She had been living in New York with her daughter, Adia Kozarsky, for the past five years. She also lived for a few years in Eldorado with her daughter, Maxine Giovanitti. Zoila was born March 5, 1916, in Sonora to Daniel Camunez Flores and Jesusita Reyna Flores. She attended San Angelo High School until her marriage July 10, 1933, to Maximo Guerrero. They were lifetime residents in San Angelo until they retired to live in Eldorado with their daughter, Maxine Giovanitti. Her husband preceded her in death May 30, 1989. Mr. Guerrero was one of the early pioneers in West Texas to transmit Spanish radio programs. Zoila helped her husband with translations. She retired from Tom Green County as an expanded nutritionist. She then went to work for the next 10 years as a bilingual teaching assistant for adult education. She retired in the mid-80s. She and her husband were charter members of the Good Neighbor Commission. She is survived by her three daughters, Aida Kozarsky of Stony Point, N.Y., Maxine Giovanitti and husband, Thomas, of Fort Worth and Hilda Blann and husband, Clint, of Marlin; a son, Maximo Guerrero Jr. and wife, Laura, of Fort Worth; one sister, Maclovia Verdugo of El Cajon, Calif.; one brother, Alfred Flores of Chula Vista, Calif.; two brothers-in-law, Salvador Guerrero of Odessa and Jerry Guerrero of Pinole, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and one great- grandchild. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Delia Guerrero Garcia; and a grandson, Ernest Garcia. MATTHIS SONORA - (Miss) Leon Cashiel Matthis passed away Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, in Hudspeth Hospital in Sonora. She was a retired educator and a lifelong Methodist. Born Aug. 25, 1916, in Gonzales, she was named for her father, longtime Methodist minister L.C. Matthis. Following graduation from Sonora High School, she received a bachelor of arts degree from McMurry College and a master's degree from North Texas State University. She then taught five years in Texas, in Lometa and Christoval, before beginning her long and distinguished career in Coalinga and Bellflower, Calif. She moved back to Sonora in 1994. Her accomplishments from 1944 until her retirement in 1981 include graduate work at University of Southern California, California State University, George Peabody College, Whittier College and Pepperdine University. Noted particularly as a reading specialist, L.C. also was an administrator, and she was certified in every field in which certification is offered in the state of California. In 1974 she was chosen an ``Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America,'' and was a finalist for ``Teacher of the Year'' for the state of California. An avid genealogist, L.C. had documented her family's roots in colonial America, the Confederacy and colonial Texas. Her grandfather, Hiram Matthis, was one of Sonora's earliest school superintendents, and an uncle, Claude Matthis, one of the town's early physicians, both in the nineteenth century. Her father was Sonora's Methodist pastor during the fund-raising period for the existing church building in the 1920s. She was preceded in death by several sisters and brothers, including her twin sister, Maggie Elizabeth. She is survived by a sister, Mary Martin of New Mexico; a niece, Dell Davis Tedford of Sonora; a brother-in-law, Milton Martin of California; as well as other nieces and nephews. Audrey Lowe KINGSLAND - Audrey Childs Lowe, 76, of Kingsland died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, in Llano. She was born April 14, 1923, in Mart and had lived in Kingsland since 1979. She was a retired secretary at San Jacinto College in Deer Park and was a member of the Kingsland Community Church. Tom Medcalf KERMIT - Tom L. Medcalf, 87, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, in a local hospital. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. today in Coleman City Cemetery in Coleman. Burial will follow in St. Ambrose Catholic Cemetery. David was born Aug. 13, 1934, in the Bethel community to Bill and Stella Schwartz. He married Betty Joyce Halfmann July 8, 1961, in Olfen. David was a farmer and was involved in many community organizations including the Knights of Columbus, Young Farmers and the Wall Volunteer Fire Department. David was a caring and generous person and was an organ donor. David was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Stella Schwartz; a sister, Mercedes Jost; and a brother-in-law, Jimmy Schniers. He passed away at 4:35 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at his home. Mr. Gibboney was born Aug. 25, 1927, to Benjamin and Mary Ann Gibboney in McAlevy's Fort, Pa. In 1974 he retired from the United States Air Force after serving his country for 21 years. He also retired from Ethicon in San Angelo after 16 years of service. He married Vandaline Shultz on March 21, 1953, in Philadelphia. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Vandaline; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley Beth and Larry Day of San Angelo and Debra Ann and Norman Woods of Kerrville; and six grandsons, Wade, Warren and Weston Day and David, Randy and Craig Woods. Also surviving are his brother, James Gibboney and wife, Betty, of Boalsburg, Pa.; three sisters-in-law and their husbands, Naomi and Leslie McIntosh of Lewisville, Edna and J.D. Davis of San Angelo and Loretta and Ivy Durbin of Mustang, Okla.; several nieces, nephews, many friends; and his cat, Blackie. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, David Gibboney, and three sisters, Emily, Eleanor and Elizabeth. It was Raymond's desire to be cared for at home. With the help of the caring support of Hospice personnel the family was able to do so until his death. ODUS WITTENBURG Odus Wittenburg, 65, of San Angelo died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at his residence. The family will be receiving visitors at 6 p.m. and a vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, in Robert Massie Riverside Chapel. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at Holy Angels Catholic Church with the Rev. Benedict Zientek officiating. Graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. in Senterfitt Cemetery in Lometa. Arrangements are by Robert Massie Funeral Home. Odus was born March 8, 1934, in Lometa to L.W. and Inez Wittenburg. He grew up in Lometa and graduated from Eden High School. He attended Sul Ross and Texas Tech Universities. Odus was involved in ranching all of his life, owning and operating the Texas Sheep Co. until 1998. He served on the West Texas Boys Ranch Board and was an avid sponsor of the Meals for the Elderly. He served as auctioneer for many 4-H Club and show lamb sales as well as the San Angelo Stock Show. He also served as chairman for the West Texas Rehabilitation Center. A man with a story, Odus loved people and treasured his friends and children. He conveyed both dignity and simplicity. Odus was always straightforward and seldom complained. Odus was a proud man with great respect for his heritage. He came from a sheep ranching family and the sheep industry was ingrained in his heart and soul. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Wittenburg of San Angelo; a daughter, Chrissi Gumbert and husband, Steve, of Richardson; a son, Odus E. ``Boogie'' Wittenburg and wife, Ashley, of Boston; three grandchildren, Grant and Jake Gumbert and William Wittenburg; his mother, Inez Wittenburg of San Angelo; and a sister, DeRose Belcheff of Amarillo. She was the granddaughter of Adeline and William Hemphill, founder of Hemphill-Wells department store. She attended San Angelo schools, San Angelo Junior College and the University of Texas at Austin. Sarah married Oliver H. ``Mick'' Otto on June 10, 1943. Mrs. Otto was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, Junior League of San Angelo, Wednesday Card Club and Bunch to Lunch group. She also was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, St. Catherine's Guild, Tuesday prayer group and Bible study groups. She was passionate about clothing design, sewing and art and spent many happy hours at the Hemphill camp in Christoval. Mrs. Otto was preceded in death by her parents; by Mick Otto; her sister, Christelle Taylor; and a son, Dr. Robert Michael Otto. She is survived by her children, Walter Donald Otto, Oliver Harold ``Buddy'' Otto and wife, Bonnie, Sarah Emily ``Sally'' Ray and husband, Phil, and daughter-in-law, Carolyn Otto; grandchildren, Christopher Lee and Sunny Bryce Otto and Laura Christelle and Julia Anne Harrison; special niece, Christelle Taylor Holt and husband, Steve; great-nieces, Audrey Christelle Holt and Dr. Shelby Holt Burkey; and numerous cousins.
