OTTO JULIUS HELWEG Otto Julius Helweg passed away in his sleep Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at 89 years of age. He is survived by his wife of almost 63 years, Wanda, daughter, Anease and husband, Jim Henry Meier, and son, Duane Helweg, all of San Angelo. Also, local granddaughters and husbands are Janna and Scott Wisniewski, Susan and Marshall Brown, plus a granddaughter, Kara Helweg, and one grandson, Carl Helweg, both of Phoenix. He had two great-grandchildren, Kathryn Brown and Nicholas Wisniewski. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with Pastor Chester McCown conducting. Funeral arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Otto was born April 12, 1910, in Tom Green County south of Miles, were he was christened in the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. He continued to work on his parents farm after his school days and had learned to speak German and English from his parents in the home and then Spanish from the farm laborers he worked beside in the fields. He was an only child. Otto married the former Wanda Montgomery on Dec. 20, 1936, and they celebrated 60 years together in 1996. They raised their two children in San Angelo. After doing so, in 1966, he and Wanda vacated the ``empty nest'' and headed for Lubbock where Otto became the tree trimmer for the entire campus at Texas Tech University, a job he enjoyed until he retired in 1976. Otto's sports interests grew beyond baseball, while there, as he learned to like the Red Raiders, Dallas Cowboys and more recently the Angelo State Rams. His granddaughter Janna's husband is a former Ram basketball player. In 1988, Otto and Wanda had once again become ``Concho River Rats'' when they returned to San Angelo on the South Concho River, where Otto resided until his death. His first love was never forgotten nor far away - baseball and the Atlanta Braves. In recent years, his love for his former ranching endeavor in the deer-filled Texas Hill Country resurfaced as he found solace from life's health ill's by enjoying visiting with his granddaughter Susan at her husband's family ranch near Water Valley. There her husband keeps a feeder near the ranch house where Otto loved to watch the deer come in to dine at dusk. Prior to 1993, Otto's son Duane and children, Carl and Kara, had visited Industry, Austin County, from their home in Arizona. Afterward, Duane wrote of the Helwegs' Texas-German history which began there. It was the ``industrious'' nature of the German work ethic, whereby that town got its name. It is that same dedication to hard work for which Otto Helweg's family will remember him. One never knows the full measure of one's spirit and will, until called upon to use it. Just as a Texas armadillo found out that Otto chased away from his home in a past summer while using a quad cane and brandishing a stick! It is with that same spirit and will that Otto fought leaving this life, carried beyond mere human understanding, until the very end. Then when he finished running this life's gauntlet he took his well-deserved rest and simply and quietly went to sleep a last time in this life. He's now in that happier cowboy land where he once again stands tall in the saddle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10/3/99 TODAY BIG SPRING - Marcelino Herrera Sr., 79, rosary at 7 p.m. in Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel; service at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas Catholic Church; burial in Mount Olive Memorial Park.
