Mrs. Johnson was born March 12, 1920, in Sonora to W.A. and Belle Birtrong Miers, an old pioneer family of Sutton County. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sonora, Sonora Women's Club and the Sonora Golf Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, Fred Adkins of Sonora; three daughters, JoAddah Watson of Carefree, Ariz., Jessi Lem Wardlaw of Sonora and Janet Pearce of Canton, Texas; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. MILTON MOSSELL Graveside service celebrating the life of Milton Mossell was held at 4 p.m Friday in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Robert Massie Funeral Home handled the arrangements. He died Oct. 6, 1999, at his residence at the age of 78. Milton was born Dec. 28, 1920, in South Holland, Ill., the son of Jacob Frank and Nellie Mossell. He was married to Ivey Nelwyn Williams on Jan. 22, 1960, in San Angelo. He was a 26-year veteran of the U.S. Army and Air Force. He served in the Army during World War II in Dutch New Guinea, North Africa, and the Philippines. His service in the Air Force took him to Japan, Germany and various assignments in the United States. Among his medals are the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, the Air Force Commendation Medal and Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon. Surviving are his wife; and four children, Margaret Wilburg and husband, Rick, of Henderson, Nev., Patricia Mossell of San Angelo, David Mossell and wife, Heather, of Austin and Michael Mossell and wife, Jennifer, of San Angelo. McCULLY Alton W. McCully of San Angelo passed away Friday, Oct. 8, 1999. Service will be at noon Monday, Oct. 11, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. He attended schools at Matador and Spur. He received a bachelor of arts degree in 1941 from McMurry University in Abilene. He entered the United States Armed Forces in July 1941. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps in May 1942. He saw combat duty in the South Pacific and Philippines during World War II. He served over two winters in Korea during the U.S. involvement and later served a year in Vietnam. He was commanding officer of four different aircraft squadrons and one Marine Corps Air Station. His most satisfying assignment was as the commanding officer of the first twin-engine helicopter squadron. At that time it was the largest U.S. helicopter. When he was handed his orders he was the only member of the squadron. When he transferred the flag to the next command two years later the squadron had 24 helicopters and more than 600 officers and personnel. He earned a Distinguished Flying Cross, three air medals and a Letter of Commendation Ribbon for combat flying in Korea, the South Pacific and Philippine theaters of operation during World War II. After retiring from the service he worked for Hughes Aircraft Co. of California, and the Garrett Corp. of Phoenix. His travels for these companies took him to 16 foreign countries. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, the former Velma Jo Whitfield. He also is survived by two sons, A.W. McCully Jr. and Thomas M. McCully; two daughters, Ginger McCully and Beverly Gaye Warner; and one stepdaughter, Sandra Marilyn; two grandchildren, Christine and Ellis Warner; three sisters, Selbia Foreman, Joyce Giliuson and Helen Pat Sims; five nieces and two nephews. Avery was born Oct. 26, 1915, in the Concord community in Grimes County near Iola, to Jettie B. Willis and Katie Isbell Willis. He served in the Army Air Corps and Air Force from 1940 to 1968. He was in the first squadrons to arrive at Goodfellow Air Force Base. He did five separate tours at Goodfellow, having been stationed in Georgia, Utah, Alabama, California, Korea and an accompanied tour to Japan. He also served at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, at a base in Wichita, Kan., and Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, from which he retired. After retirement, he worked at Webb AFB for the Department of Defense as a civilian for nine years. Avery Willis married Naomi Louise Collard July 2, 1942, at the Whitaker Ranch in San Angelo. He was preceded in death by a son, Bryn; his parents; two sisters; and five brothers. Mr. Willis was a member of Park Heights Baptist Church and the presidents Sunday school class in the church. He received a 50-year certificate for his participation in the Angelo Masonic Lodge. His greatest joys were his family and working in his yard and growing a garden to share with friends and neighbors. He is survived by his wife, Naomi; his three sons, the Rev. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Gladys was born July 12, 1916, in Dawson to Floyd D. and Cynthia Lou Sawyer. She was the youngest daughter of six children. After graduating from high school, she worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell in Tyler. Gladys was married to Orville L. ``Jack'' Hill on March 25, 1944, in Palo Pinto County and they made their home in Tyler. She later worked for the Blackstone Hotel and then for Mother Francis Hospital in Tyler until she retired. Gladys and her husband, Jack, moved to San Angelo in 1982 when her health began to decline so they could be near their daughter and son-in-law. She was a member of Johnson Street Church of Christ. Gladys was a beautiful person, inside and out. Small, but strong and completely devoted to her family, she will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Robert Tuttle Sr. of San Angelo; grandson, Bob Tuttle Jr. of San Angelo; granddaughter, Deborah Wright and husband, Joe Don, of Bentonville, Ark.; great-grandchildren, Zachary and Joshua Wright of Bentonville; brother and sister-in-law, James E. and Frieda Sawyer of Tyler; sister-in-law, Frances Sawyer of Troup; nephew, Dempsey Sawyer; nieces, Lori Kaye Pintsch, Shari Lynn Galloway, Camille Smith and Cary Lou Bennett; and several cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews. Ted attended Angelo State University for one year and was presently enrolled at Texas A&M University in College Station. He was his mother's caring, giving, big hearted Teddy Bear, and as she stated, ``The love of her life.'' As his father, Mark, stated, ``Everybody could say something good about him and they didn't have to stretch the truth. He got more out of life than anyone three times his age. He loved his baseball, he loved Texas A&M and he loved his family and the Lord.'' Ted was remembered by his brother as a great person who loved to make people laugh and also as a well-known prankster. They then moved to San Angelo where he was coach and math teacher until his retirement. She worked in the millinery department of Hemphill-Wells for many years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Elizabeth Wood Bible Class and a charter member of Las Hermanas Study Club. She enjoyed playing bridge and doing craft work. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.I. Dykes; her parents, G.A. and Estelle Long Henderson; one sister, Birdie Sue Belcher; and three brothers, Herndon, Jim and Bill Henderson. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Ester and Eric Behrend of San Angelo, Laura and Jim O'Neal of Huntsville, Ala., and Birdie and Bob Stevenson of Ann Arbor, Mich. HARRELL E. `GENE' EDWARDS Our Dad, Papa and friend passed away Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, in Robert Lee Care Center after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Burial will be in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Dad was born June 23, 1927, to John and Mary Edwards in Wall. Gene graduated from San Angelo High School and then worked on the family farm in Wall. He joined the Army in 1953 and was stationed at Fort Hood. He married Bernice Alexander on April 13, 1957, in Robert Lee. She preceded him in death on Dec. 30, 1995. Gene never met a stranger. He had a great love for his life and for people. In his earlier days he was seen at the livestock auctions with his friend, Booker T. Edmund. They were known to trade a few horses and ``chute''the bull. He was an avid horseman. He is survived by two daughters, Sharon Till and husband, Butch, of Kingsland and Francine Gilbert and husband, Gary, of San Angelo; two sons, Gene P. and wife, Judy, and Randy and wife, Kelly Edwards, all of San Angelo; two granddaughters, Sherry Roark and husband, Wayne, of Kingsland and Brandy Smith and husband, Michael, of California; five grandsons, Mary and Monty Gilbert of San Angelo, Tanner Edwards of Bryan, and Shawn and Shank Edwards of San Angelo; and seven great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Vista Care Family Hospice or a favorite charity. FRED H. BALL Fred H. Ball, 87, of San Angelo passed away Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, in Shannon Medical Center. Service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, at First Baptist Church with Dr. Jerold McBride, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Fred was born June 2, 1912, in Paris, Monroe County, Mo., to Harve and Margaret (Magruder) Ball. His family moved to Mertzon in July 1927, where he graduated from Mertzon High School. While attending high school, his weekends and summers were spent on their ranch near Mertzon. Fred later attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene and Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater, Okla. Fred and his high school sweetheart, LaVerne Girvin, were married at the home of her parents in Mertzon on March 3, 1935. Fred and LaVerne started their ranching career by leasing the J.J. Burney ranch north of Mertzon. In 1941 they moved to San Angelo where he bought the Frozen Food Locker Plant. Wanting to get back into the livestock business, Fred sold the locker plant. In 1946, he and two associates opened Mid-West Feed Yards, one of the first feeding operations of its kind in the area. Fred's early contributions to civic programs began in the stock show and rodeo field. He was picked as president of the Fat Stock Show and Rodeo Association in 1955. While associated with the stock show association work he was determined to see San Angelo erect a coliseum to house not only the show itself but other civic activities. He also served on the board of the National Lamb Feeders Association and as a member of the steering committee for the West Texas Boys Ranch Cattleman's Roundup, which he and Jack Drake began in 1960. He also served on the Boys Ranch executive committee, was a two-term city commissioner, a director of West Side National Bank and was a deacon of First Baptist Church. In 1968, he bought the El Patio Motel. HAROLD ALLEN SUSEN Harold Allen Susen, 82, of San Angelo died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at his home. Harold was born Aug. 9, 1917, to Felix and Pearl Mae (Crenshaw) Susen in Schleicher County. He graduated from Eldorado High School in 1936. He worked in lumberyards at Eldorado and San Angelo until December 1941 and he entered the Air Force and served in World War II. Stephenson on Dec. 16, 1945, in Corpus Christi. She preceded him in death in February 1996. His family moved to Mertzon in July 1927, where he graduated from Mertzon High School. While attending high school, his weekends and summers were spent on their ranch near Mertzon. Fred later attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene and Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater, Okla. Fred and his high school sweetheart, LaVerne Girvin, were married at the home of her parents in Mertzon on March 3, 1935. Fred and LaVerne started their ranching career by leasing the J.J. Burney ranch north of Mertzon. In 1941 they moved to San Angelo where he bought the Frozen Food Locker Plant. Wanting to get back into the livestock business, Fred sold the locker plant. In 1946, he and two associates opened Mid-West Feed Yards, one of the first feeding operations of its kind in the area. Fred's early contributions to civic programs began in the stock show and rodeo field. He was picked as president of the Fat Stock Show and Rodeo Association in 1955. While associated with the stock show association work he was determined to see San Angelo erect a coliseum to house not only the show itself but other civic activities. LELAND SHELTON SUTTON BRADY - Leland Shelton Sutton died Oct. 12, 1999, at his home in Melvin. He would have been 68 on Oct. 15. A retired farmer, rancher and livestock dealer, he was the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Sutton, early settlers of the Melvin community. He was preceded in death by his father, Horace Shelton Sutton, and is survived by his wife, Reba; his son, Barry, and wife, Gloria, of Melvin; daughter, Margay Stillings and husband, Jerry, of San Antonio; his mother, Mrs. H.S. Sutton of Melvin and San Antonio; his sisters, Natalie Arvin and husband, Sherrill, and Carrie Nan Rauch and husband, Earl, all of San Antonio; and six grandchildren, Bethani, Shelton and Barret Stillings, Taylor Ann and Ty Sutton, and Teresa Morris. He loved the land, his horses and livestock. In keeping with his wishes, the handmade wooden coffin will be borne by a horse-drawn farm wagon. Survivors include two sons, Clinton Miller of Lubbock and Virgil Miller of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Patricia Cox of Duncanville; four sisters, Elizabeth Davis of Oklahoma City, Eunice Barta of Gonzales, Edith Weeks of Ridgecrest, California, and Patsy Clark of San Antonio; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandsons. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obituaries WILLIE MAE MULLER BALLINGER - Mrs. Willie Mae Muller, a resident of Heritage Oaks Estates in Ballinger since July of 1993 passed away Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999. She was a born to Charles Edward and Emily Rice on July 4, 1907, in Lubbock. She married Edwin Muller on July 5, 1924, also in Lubbock. They lived in the Lowake Community, Ballinger, Abilene and Clyde until Mr. Muller's death in March of 1970, then she moved to Denton. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Clyde. She was preceded in death by her parents; two boys; her husband; and a son-in-law, Bill Lewin of Denton. Survivors include one daughter, Jerry Lewin of Denton; two sons, Eddie of Denton and Lee Roy and wife, Velma, of Ballinger; also seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, in Elmwood Memorial Gardens in Abilene. Arrangements are by Rains-Seale Funeral Home. LESTER `EARL' BOURLAND Lester ``Earl'' Bourland, 69, of San Angelo died in Heritage Oaks Estates in Ballinger on Oct. 13, 1999, after a long battle with lung problems due to many years of smoking. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with Portis Ribble officiating. Earl was born March 2, 1930, in Jones County to W.A. ``Bill'' and Tempie Bourland. Earl was raised in Abilene where he attended public schools and helped in his family's grocery business. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After this service he returned to Abilene Christian College where he received his degree in 1956. He moved to San Angelo and went to work for General Telephone Co. He left in 1968 to work for IBM and returned to GTE in 1979 and retired in 1991. Earl served as an officer in the San Angelo Bowling Association and the Westside Lions Club. He served several terms as secretary-treasurer of the Concho Valley Telephone Pioneers Club as well as their president. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Earl was married to Mary Sample on Aug. 4, 1963, in San Angelo. Survivors include his loving wife, Mary of the home; his daughter, Laura Carmichael of San Angelo; two grandchildren, Leslie Vaughn and husband, John, of San Angelo and Chad Carmichael of San Angelo; two great-granddaughters, Lindsey and Lainey Vaughn; one brother, Roy Bourland and wife, Marjorie, of Houston; and three nephews. Earl was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Steve Sample in August 1999. The family requests memorials be made to Vista Care Family Hospice or the American Cancer Society. JIMMY OTIS MARSHALL Jimmy Otis Marshall, 51, of San Angelo died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, in a local hospital. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, in Fairmount Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. He was born Oct. 23, 1947, in Wichita Falls. He served in the Air Force as a security policeman in Vietnam.
