BEAULAH MAE WHITE HARKLEROAD LUBBOCK - Service for Beaulah Mae White Harkleroad, 87, of Lubbock and formerly of Cotton Center, was at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, in the Abbey Chapel of Resthaven with the Rev. Lyndall Fletcher of the Sudan and Spade Methodist Churches, officiating. He was assisted by Jeff McCreight, pastor of New Life Family Center. Burial was in Center Plains Cemetery. Arrangements were by Resthaven Funeral Home. Beaulah Mae was born April 13, 1912, in the Kelly community, Collingsworth County, Texas, to Mr. and Mrs. Winfield Scott White. She married Olaf Welch Harkleroad on June 13, 1936. He preceded her in death on Feb. 6, 1991. Beaulah Mae, also referred to as ``Me-Ma,'' ``Moma Hark'' and ``Grandma,'' by those who loved her, graduated from Wellington High School in 1930. It was in Wellington that she met and married her beloved husband, Olaf. Shortly thereafter they moved to Fieldton and then to Cotton Center where they farmed, raised their family and were very active in church and civic organizations. Beaulah Mae loved and lived life to its fullest. She filled every possible moment by giving and doing for others. One of her favorite ways to share her love was through her music. Some of her fondest memories were the days of her youth when she traveled throughout the states performing as a musician with an evangelist group. Later she inspired so many young people through her ever so patient music lessons. For so many years it seemed the Methodist Church of Cotton Center wasn't complete without Beaulah Mae sitting at either the organ or piano. She attempted to retire from this job after about 30 years of service, only to be reinstated for another 15 years. It was during this time she brought so much happiness to different ones in the Hale Center Nursing Home where she delighted in entertaining the residents with her piano playing on Sunday afternoons. Beaulah was well known throughout the country for her wonderful cooking. No one ever went away from her home or table hungry. She never knew ... nor did it matter ... how many she would be cooking for ... she always had enough. This mother was a strong supporter, not only for her own children, but for so many others. The 4-H and MYF organizations always felt her presence and saw results of her many hours of toil and devotion. Her love for her church knew no limits. She generously gave so many hours to one of her favorite organizations - the WSCS. It was for this group she often helped raise funds by, once again, giving many hours of her skill with cooking for the Lions Club. After the death of her husband, Beaulah Mae moved to Lubbock where she resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Steve Kidd. This fine lady leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. Proverbs 16:3. Survivors include two sons, E.W. Harkleroad and wife, Joy, of Pittsburgh and Oran W. Byrns (retired), or ``Bob'' as he preferred to be called, died at 10 a.m. at home Friday, Nov. 5, 1999. Memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 8, at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) located at 29 N. Oakes, San Angelo with the Rev. Ben Hubert officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. It was Bob's wish that his remains be cremated and his ashes spread across the Davis Mountains. Bob was born Jan. 14, 1910, (the date, Jan. 14, as he often observed, he happily shared with Albert Schweitzer and unhappily he also often admitted with Benedict Arnold.) Nevertheless, Jan, 14, 1910, marked the beginning of a long and interesting life. His lifelong interest in railroads was no doubt sparked by his birthplace in the Station Agent's Quarters of the Great Northern Railroad in Belfield, N.D. His father, Walter H. Byrns, was the agent there. His mother, Dorothy Meir Byrns, promptly named young Bob, ``Robert'' after Dr. Robert Caldwell the attending physician who gave the initial ``spank'' to introduce him to this world of hard knocks and more spanks to ``further adventures of flood and field and hairbreadth escapes'' (to quote Shakespeare as Bob liked to do.) His first memorable adventure occurred a few months later when he was abruptly left in his bath while his parents administered first-aid to a critically injured railroader whose locomotive had rear-ended a standing freight train during a driving North Dakota blizzard. The wreck knocked off the end of the depot - the end fortunately, opposite where young Bob sat waiting to be bathed. Cowboys ``shooting up the town'' on paydays also provided other interesting diversions of the time. Two younger brothers, Kenneth Antrim and Richard Howard ultimately joined the family. The brothers and their parents at one time or another lived in most of the states west of the 100th meridian due to the restless nature of their ``boomer'' railroading father. The frequent moves provided a good and varied education in one sense although the Byrns boys seldom finished a term in the same school in which they had enrolled the previous fall. Ultimately, after three years in Albuquerque, N.M., high schools, Bob graduated from the Longmont, Colorado High School in 1928 and enrolled in Colorado Teachers College (now the University of Northern Colorado). During this time he worked at a variety of jobs - dishwasher, paperboy, truck driver and in the summer on construction gangs. He earned his bachelor's degree with an English major in 1933 (English majors weren't required to take mathematics courses at that time - ``math'' as Bob often observed, was for him ``incomprehensible beyond the first ten digits''). He graduated in the midst of ``The Great Depression.'' Times were tough. A life certificate as a teacher in the public schools of Colorado looked nice framed, but that was it. Riding freight trains in search of construction jobs proved fruitless. But, in 1934, ``Mr. Byrns'' now, acquired a job in southeastern Colorado teaching the seventh and eighth grades. The job included coaching basketball and track and teaching Sunday school - at $75 a month only, the county was broke and teachers' warrants had to be sold to anyone who would buy them - at a market discount. The following year, a different job opened up in another county that was solvent at $80 a month. This financial improvement enabled ``Prof. Byrns'' to court and ultimately marry Lily Frederiksen, the red-haired ``school marm'' in the adjacent school district. Bob and Lily were married in 1937 beginning a very happy union that lasted over 50 years until her death in San Angelo in 1988. While still in college, Bob enlisted in the Colorado National Guard, partly as a protest against a latent pacifistic movement on college campuses at that time. Another reason for his enlistment was the pay of 73 cents a drill. This sum provided half of his college tuition each quarter (college was on a quarterly system then). Subsequent promotions brought an increase in pay and finally ``Sergeant Byrns'' was discharged upon graduation from college. He promptly enlisted in the Army Reserves and shortly thereafter was commissioned a Second Lieutenant Infantry-Reserve. Bob requested active duty as a company officer with the Civilian Conservation Corps (the ``CCC''). The U.S. Army was charged with running the 200-man camps and since there weren't enough regular Army officers to man the camps, reserve officers were called on. Bob said the entire 1930s regular Army could have been easily concentrated in the Astrodome. With the rise of Nazi Germany and the outbreak of hostilities in Europe, Lt. Byrns was ordered from CCC duty in 1940 to Fort Benning, Ga., to help cadre the newly activated Second Armored Division. At the outbreak of World War II the now ``Captain Byrns,'' was considered a veteran soldier compared to his contemporaries in the rapidly expanding Army. He spent the first several years at the Armor Center of Fort Knox, Ky., training recruits both commissioned and enlisted, in the rudiments of soldiering. In 1944 he served in the South Pacific Theatre of Operations with Army Amphibious Forces. He ultimately returned stateside as a battalion commander after the Japanese surrender. Duty in the peacetime Army was varied and interesting. Fortunately, Lily was able to accompany her soldier on his subsequent assignments - Fort Knox, as an instructor in the Armored School; the Army Arctic Test Center in Alaska, as chief of the Armor Section to the Continental Army Command; and Fort Monroe, Va., as a general staff officer and ``Arctic expert.'' At Fort Monroe, young Bob Junior and Stephen or ``Steve'' Byrns were born. Following Fort Monore, the Byrns family was sent to Copenhagen, Denmark, were ``Col. Byrns'' was a member of the American Advisory Group to the Danish Army. Lily was a Danish-American so the Byrns kids were sent to Danish schools. The entire family spoke Danish - save Daddy who assiduously studied the tongue and struggled along as best he could. The Byrns family returned to the United States where Col. Byrns served his last duty station with the Army as a professor of military science at Texas A&M University. After retiring from the Army with 28 years of creditable service, Col. Byrns enrolled in the graduate school at A&M and received a master's degree in history, the first one ever given by Texas A&M University. Bob began his life's second career with a move to San Angelo in 1964. ``Professor Byrns'' started teaching geography and history at what is now Angelo State University when it was still San Angelo College or ``SAC.'' His first office was an old converted Army barracks, but he loved it. He often remarked that his years at ASU were among the most constructive and enjoyable of his entire working life. He once said, ``I looked forward to each Monday morning with as much enthusiasm as I ever looked forward to Friday.'' He reluctantly retired in 1977 saying, ``I want to leave people saying, `I sure miss old Byrns,' instead of staying until they say `I sure wish old Byrns had retired when he threatened to a couple of years ago.''' Throughout his life, Bob was very interested in professional development and community leadership. He was a graduate of the Air Force Command and Staff College and other military service schools. He was also the recipient of numerous academic and military honors. He headed local and regional geography and history-related organizations, was an Elder in San Angelo's St. Mark Presbyterian Church and taught the adult Sunday school class there for many years. Bob's first wife Lily, was a constant inspiration to him throughout his career. She was a devoted and loving wife and mother. She died of Lou Gehrig's disease in 1988 - brave and smiling to the end. A year later, on May 28, 1989, in Austin, Bob married his second wife, the former Jemes Bird, a longtime family friend. Their shared time spent in retirement in San Angelo was active with travel, family, friends and civic, church and ASU related activities. They were an inspiration to all those whose lives they touched. Bob will be remembered by his family as an extremely loving and caring husband and father. He never acted in anger nor complained. He prided himself with self-inflicted problems. He always thought of others before himself and truly loved his fellow man. He was honest and had a great and very dry sense of humor that surfaced often. He was an officer and a gentleman and above all a practicing Christian. Bob is survived by his widow, Jemes; and his two sons and their families, Bob Jr. and Glenda and their daughters, Megan and Erin of Houston, and Steve and Ginger and their sons, Daniel and Luke of San Angelo. He is also survived by two stepchildren, Brad Bird of Phoenix and Brian Taylor and her husband, Mark, of Austin. Other survivors include his brother, Ken and wife, Ginny, of Kansas City, Mo., and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Hospice of San Angelo, San Angelo's First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Meals for the Elderly or a favorite charity. ``The Last Parade'' Let the bugle blow Let the march be played With a forming of the troops For my last parade The years of wars and the years of waiting Obedient to orders, unhesitating Years in the States and years to overseas All woven together in my memories A lifetime of service passes in review As many good friends and exotic places, too In the waning sunlight it begins to fade With the music of my last parade.
