He passed away Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, in a local hospital. Visitation was from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Johnson's Funeral Home. Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, at Johnson Street Church of Christ with burial in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. ``Non-Stop Pop,'' as he was dubbed by his granddaughter, Alison, never met a stranger. Pop enjoyed talking and joking with everyone and was always the life of any gathering. He lit up the room with a nickname or funny line for all who were around him. He never thought twice about speaking his mind. Pop was active to the end, even considering a jaunt to Mexico as recently as 1998. Emmett was born Sept. 25, 1905, in Altus, Okla., to Lula Knutson Eddy and James Solomon Eddy. He was reared in McCulloch and San Saba counties by his mother and grandfather, W.C. Knutson. He attended school in Richland Springs and Lakeview. As a young man, Emmett was quite a baseball player and also enjoyed taking a leading role in the community singings. He worked for his uncle, Lewis Knutson, for several years. He married Nova Smith Sept. 14, 1933, in San Saba. Three children, Wanda, Daryl and Lynn resulted from this union. Emmett worked as a carpenter and machinist. He owned and operated Arrow Plastics from 1955 to 1965 and Eddy's Mobil Service from 1971 to 1974. He and Nova also owned Powell Street Grocery, which she operated from 1949 to 1968. After retiring Emmett traded tractors, cars and motors. At the age of 60 plus he and Daryl tore down several houses to salvage lumber. With this lumber he built his home and another house and helped Daryl build his home. When he was near 80 he constructed a barn by himself. Around the house and barn that Emmett built are remnants of his many projects that were initiated during his retirement years. For many years Emmett relished fishing trips on the Pecos River. He fished with a rod and reel using stink bait that he had made. He and his fishing cronies often returned with a pickup bed loaded with catfish. Pop's grandchildren were the primary beneficiaries of his fun-loving nature. He had a special relationship with and a unique way of teasing each one of them. He was the finest role model for them and set a standard that very few men can live up to. Karen remembers having to guess in which pocket he had hidden bubble gum in order to get a piece and learning years later that he had insured that she would guess correctly by hiding gum in every pocket. Most of us remember Pop had a special cheer that he liked to tease his grandkids with ``I'm number one, you're number two!'' Another memory is of trips to Richland Springs with Pop for family reunions. They were always fun as he knew a story about every landmark that we passed. Emmett described himself as a real ``go-getter'' and would add with a grin that he took Nova to work and then would ``go get her.'' When Nova's eyesight and health failed, he became her driver, cook, nurse and full-time companion. After Nova's death in 1995, Emmett became a familiar face at the Senior Citizen Center where he enjoyed playing Skip-Bo and dominoes, teasing friends and talking with anyone who would listen. Emmett is a member of the Johnson Street Church of Christ. He became a Christian at 84, fulfilling Nova's lifelong dream. He had occupied a special pew, surrounded by his church friends, each Sunday morning. Emmett especially loved singing the hymns and visiting with old acquaintances. Emmett was also a Mason. Emmett was predeceased by his wife, Nova; daughter, Wanda Eddy Murphy; and by three half brothers, John, L. and S. He is survived by son, Daryl Eddy and wife, Jill, of San Angelo; daughter, Lynn Granzin and husband, Stacy, of Miles; eight grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren, Karen Murphy of Lewisville, Regue Chick and husband, Tom, of Plano, Jill Willis of Azle, Kyle Eddy and wife, Daye, and Melissa Goode and husband, Craig, all of Southlake, Layne Eddy of Arlington, Heather Thompson and husband, Chris, of Missouri City, Alison Granzin of Denton, Kelly Granzin and wife, Kim, of San Angelo and Larry Granzin and wife, Michelle, of Miles; 11 great-grandchildren, Jennifer Murphy, Jeramy Willis, Ryan and Courtney Eddy, Grayson and Connor Goode, Peyton Eddy, Tristan and Jordyn Granzin and Braiden and Haiden Granzin. Emmett is also survived by a half brother, J.S. Eddy and wife, Jackie, of Stephenville; and numerous Knutson and Bush cousins. Grandsons will be pallbearers. Pop believed in working hard and having fun and has left that legacy to his family. He showed his love by doing things for his family and by always being there for them. We will miss you Pop - you were truly one of a kind! Memorials may be made to the Senior Citizens Center, Johnson Street Church of Christ or the American Heart Association.
