Helen was a homemaker, a Shannon Auxiliary volunteer and a member of St. Mark Presbyterian Church. He served his country during World War II while in the United States Air Force. He was married to Lamoyne Williams April 26, 1947, in Abilene and he was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pecos. JEWEL `JUDY' FAYE GREGORY By the Grace of God, through Christ, has passed in the next great realm of life. She was born in 1922 in Roger Mills County, Okla., to John Wesley and Clara Thomas. She was one of eight children. Her parents moved to Plainview where she met and married A.W. ``Skeeter'' Gregory. They moved to San Angelo in 1949. Judy was involved where ever her children and grandchildren were. She was active in PTA and the Lake View Band Boosters and sponsors during the school years. She stayed active in the Business Women's Association during her bookkeeping years. Judy was employed at Sears & Roebuck, 18 years at Producer's Livestock Auction and was the accounting firm of Armstrong, Baccus & Baker's first retiree at age 65. She had been a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 29 N. Oakes, for more than 40 years and a member of the Henson Class. Her reputation for steadfastness, loyalty, trustworthiness and quiet love for family, children and faith in God was known by all who have known her. Judy was someone you could count on at home, at work and at church. She cherished her family and was caring and giving to all in their personals lives. She often took on others' accountability as ``the protector'' of the family virtues and development. Her past times were manicuring her ``green pastures'' yard and listening to music to relax to or be energized by. As other sweet women of her era, she crocheted and sewed many beautiful treasures to pass along to her loved ones. Judy was a loving mother to daughters, Donna Fowler and husband, David, and to Sue Boswell, all of San Angelo. TWEEDY John Bayard Tweedy, a lawyer, executive and co-founder of the Vail ski resort, died of stroke complications on Friday, Nov. 25, 1999, in Denver. He was 78 years old. Mr. Tweedy first came to Colorado during World War II to train with the Tenth Mountain Division at Camp Hale, and he returned to live in Denver after the war. The friendships he formed with other Tenth Mountain veterans would later become the nucleus of Vail Associates, the partnership that created Vail. Born in 1921 at a remote mining camp in Ecuador, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Mellick Tweedy. He was raised in the mining camp and in Plainfield, N.J. He spent childhood summers working on the family ranch in Knickerbocker, Texas. He was educated at St. Paul's School and Princeton University. In World War II he fought with the Office of Strategic Services, operating behind Japanese lines in command of hill tribe troops in Burma, and gathering intelligence in Ceylon, Singapore and Thailand. Graduating from Columbia Law School, he practiced business law in Denver from 1950 until 1971 at the firms of Grant, Shafroth & Toll, Tweedy & Fowler, and Tweedy, Mosley, Aley & Young. He worked for Vail Associates Inc. as chairman, general counsel, treasurer and vice president between 1960 and 1976. After his father's death in 1949, he worked with his brother, Andy Tweedy, in developing the ranch at Knickerbocker founded by their grandfather, Joseph Tweedy in 1877. In 1971, he left Denver to become an executive with the Oil Shale Corp., later known as Tosco. He was chief legal officer, acquired two of its major refineries, and ran its coal division. He also served as a director of McDermott International Inc., vice president of the Southern Natural Gas Co., director of the Offshore Co., and Director of Gary Energy Co. An avid outdoorsman, he was trustee of the Colorado Nature Conservancy, spearheading fund-raising efforts. He was also one of the organizers of the Colorado Outward Bound School and a trustee of the Rocky Mountain Center for the Environment. He was a member of the University Club, the Petroleum Club and the Denver Country Club. Mr. Tweedy married Helen B. Chenery in 1949 and had four children. He was a director of Meadow Stud Inc., the Chenery family Thoroughbred racing stable that produced 1972 Kentucky Derby winner Riva Ridge and 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat. The marriage ended in divorce in 1973. In 1980, Mr. Tweedy married Marjorie S. Sargent and returned to Denver. Together they built a log house at the Madison Fork Ranch in West Yellowstone, Mont., where they spent summers. They also traveled and pursued charitable, civic and social activities in Denver. Mr. Tweedy is survived by his wife, Marjorie S. Tweedy of Denver; two daughters, Sarah T. Manning of Englewood, Colo., and Katherine T. McGrath of Littleton, Colo.; two sons, Christopher C. Tweedy of Denver and John B. Tweedy Jr. of Boulder, Colo.; his sister and her husband, Dr. and Mrs. Edwin M. Sykes Jr. of Knickerbocker, and their children, Mr. and Mrs. Morris Reese, Nickie and Rachel; Edwin M. Sykes III, Sally, Edwin IV, Elizabeth Anne and Mary Janice; Dr. and Mrs. Mellick T. She and her husband retired from teaching in 1972 and continued to enjoy church fellowship, traveling, visiting with friends and family, attending sports events and collecting. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years in 1991. She is survived by her five children, L. She was born in 1922 in Roger Mills County, Okla., to John Wesley and Clara Thomas. She was one of eight children. Her parents moved to Plainview where she met and married A.W. ``Skeeter'' Gregory. They moved to San Angelo in 1949. Judy was involved wherever her children and grandchildren were. She was active in PTA and the Lake View Band Boosters and sponsors during the school years. She stayed active in the Business Women's Association during her bookkeeping years. Judy was employed at Sears & Roebuck, 18 years at Producer's Livestock Auction and was the accounting firm of Armstrong, Baccus & Baker's first retiree at age 65. She had been a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 29 N. Oakes, for more than 40 years and a member of the Henson Class. Her reputation for steadfastness, loyalty, trustworthiness and quiet love for family, children and faith in God was known by all who have known her. Judy was someone you could count on at home, at work and at church. She cherished her family and was caring and giving to all in their personals lives. She often took on others' accountability as ``the protector'' of the family virtues and development. Her past times were manicuring her ``green pastures'' yard and listening to music to relax to or be energized by. As other sweet women of her era, she crocheted and sewed many beautiful treasures to pass along to her loved ones. Judy was a loving mother to daughters, Donna Fowler and husband, David, and to Sue Boswell, all of San Angelo. She was a loving grandmother ``Nanaw'' to, Greg Hasty and wife, Lynette, of Christoval and to Carrie Hasty Hartmann of Catalina Island, Calif., David James Fowler of Paris, Texas, and Judy Fowler of Dallas. EDUVIGEN VICA `BUELA' GARCES Eduvigen Vica ``Buela'' Garces, 88, of San Angelo and formerly of San Jose, Calif., died at 7:36 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, in local hospital. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Buela was born Nov. 17, 1911, in Rosenberg to Elpirio and Virginia Martinez. She married Felix Garces March 21, 1931, in Karnes City. Buela was a loving homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother. She was always very active in all the things that her grandchildren and great-grandchildren did including sports and school and many other events. She was a longtime resident of San Jose until she and her family returned to San Angelo in 1994. In San Angelo, she was active in the Adult Day Care, church and senior activities. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Felix; and several brothers and sisters. Survivors include her daughter, Hortencia Garces of San Angelo; three grandsons, Frank Ray Fuentes and wife, Norma, of San Angelo, Samuel Fuentes of San Angelo and Tech Sgt. Armando Jeffrey Fuentes and wife, Elizabeth, stationed with the U.S. Air Force. Ted was born Dec. 13, 1924, in Ballinger to Ted P. and Avis Whitley Caudle. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 33 years of service. He was married to Modene Jones for 38 years. Of this union, he is survived by one son, Randy and wife, Christene, of Levelland and one daughter, Sandra Gale Sponougle of Delaware. He is also survived by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He married Esther Moser in 1983, who is a survivor of the home. Two stepsons also survive. Ted is survived locally by four sisters, Jessie and Ben Jobe and Ota Bell Clifton, all of Ballinger, Dorothy and Dick Black of San Angelo, and Jean and Truman Haupt of Rockdale; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family requests memorials be made to Hospice. MANUEL S. FLOREZ Manuel S. Florez, 78, of Bovina passed away Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999, in a Friona hospital. Manuel was born to Delores and Jesus Flores in Tom Green County and had lived in Bovina for 27 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II in the medical field hospital area. He worked as a sheep shearer for several years and as a truck driver for Berma. He married his wife, Chela, in 1971 in Mexico. Survivors include his wife, Eva ``Chela'' G. Florez; two brothers, Ramon S. Florez and Pablo S. Flores and wife, Tomasa; two sisters, Carmen Valencia and husband, Beder, and Frances Rodriguez and husband, Santos; and 25 nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Beder Valencia Jr., Chris Flores, Roy Contreras Jr., Carlos Gamez, Fred Rodriguez and Gregg Flores. Honorary pallbearer will be Michael F. Gamez. He was a driller in the oilfield for 29 years and a mechanic for the City of Ballinger for seven years and was a member of the Seventh Street Baptist Church. Bill was loved and will be missed by his family. He was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy. Hallie Ruth was born March 25, 1914, to R.D. and Ida Mae Barron in Wall. They were early 1900 residents of Tom Green County and the Wall community. Hallie Ruth graduated from Wall High School in 1932. She was married to J. Preston Hair on Dec. 24, 1933, in San Angelo. He preceded her in death on June 6, 1988. Hallie and J. Preston were farmers in the Wall and Vancourt communities for 30 years. They moved to Kingsland for while, later Brady and then back to San Angelo.
