Iva Retta was born in Ralls, Crosby County, Texas, to Roy F. Braswell and Mattie Mitchell Braswell. They moved to Bronte when she was a very young. She started school in Bronte and graduated from Bronte High School in 1942. She attended San Angelo College in 1942 and 1943. She was a longtime resident of Coke County and San Angelo. During the war, she worked from Western Union in the traffic department in Oklahoma City, Okla. She returned to Robert Lee, and worked for the Coke County Agricultural Office. She married Irven Lee Escue on May 15, 1947, in Robert Lee. They have spent 52 years together. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; and her one and only sister, Melba Braswell Denman. TOM L. WILLIAMS SAN ANTONIO - Tom L. Williams, born in Seguin in 1907, died Dec. 1, 1999, in San Antonio. Mr. Williams moved to San Antonio with his family in the 1920s and maintained ties to San Antonio while living most of his adult life in San Angelo. He and his wife of 65 years, Virginia Potter Williams, moved to San Antonio in 1997. After graduating from Baylor University where he lettered in basketball and tennis, Mr. Williams enjoyed a long career first in accounting and the oil production industry and finally in banking. He worked for Cardinal Oil Co. and Cooper Gas Co. and was involved in West Texas oil exploration in the 1940s and 1950s. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, he was an officer at Monarch Tile, a ceramic tile manufacturing company. In the mid-1960s, Mr. Williams was the president of West Side National Bank of San Angelo. After one year, he assumed the presidency of First National Bank of San Angelo, where he remained until his retirement in 1972. Mr. Williams was active in civic affairs in San Angelo throughout his life, serving on the San Angelo school board and as president of the Board of City Development. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of San Angelo. Hernandez, 76, of San Angelo passed away on his favorite day of the week, Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, in a local hospital. Mr. Hernandez was born Nov. 22, 1923, in Ciudad Acuna, Mexico. At the age of 20 he answered the Lord's call to the ministry. He attended Instituto Biblico Elim in Mexico City where he met his future wife, Maria Rodriguez. They were married on Jan. 19, 1950, and were privileged to serve God as pastors in Mexico, California and Texas. He founded churches in Monclova, Coahuila, Mexico, Manteca, Calif., and Orange Grove, Texas. He was a faithful member of the Solid Rock Church with his son, Jehu Hernandez, serving as his pastor. He is survived by his wife, Maria Hernandez of San Angelo; five children, Velma Hernandez, Ray Hernandez, Jehu Hernandez and wife, Lillian, Ida Soto and husband, Lionel, and Benjy Hernandez and wife, Anabel, and daughter-in-law, Sandy Hernandez, all of San Angelo; 10 dearly loved grandchildren, Clarissa and Tim Hernandez, Araceli and Osiel Hernandez II, Bethany, Kelli, Joey and Ryan Hernandez, and Micah and Hannah Hernandez. He also is survived by four sisters, Maria Valdez, Francisca Lopez, Margarita Castillo and Emilia Guerra; one brother, Marin Hernandez; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sons, Misael Hernandez and Osiel Hernandez; and one grandson, Caleb Benjamin Hernandez. Ruth continued her career at the Institute of Texan Cultures and the University of Texas at San Antonio where she was assistant to the director of exhibits and purchasing agent. Ruth was an avid cat fancier, showing and breeding some of the best Burmese cats in the nation under the name Concho Cattery. She had many Supreme Grand Champions and Best of Shows as well as regional and national winners. Her show kittens were in demand and sold internationally as far away as Canada and Japan. Hernandez, 76, of San Angelo passed away on his favorite day of the week, Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, in a local hospital. Family visitation was from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, at Johnson's Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Manuel Vallejo Jr., superintendent of the Gulf Latin District of the Assemblies of God, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Mr. Hernandez was born Nov. 22, 1923, in Ciudad Acuna, Mexico. At the age of 20, he answered the Lord's call to the ministry. He attended Instituto Biblico Elim in Mexico City where he met his future wife, Maria Rodriguez. They were married on Jan. 19, 1950, and were privileged to serve God as pastors in Mexico, California and Texas. He founded churches in Monclova, Coahuila, Mexico, Manteca, Calif., and Orange Grove, Texas. He was a faithful member of the Solid Rock Church with his son, Jehu Hernandez, serving as his pastor. He is survived by his wife, Maria Hernandez of San Angelo; five children, Velma Hernandez, Ray Hernandez, Jehu Hernandez and wife, Lillian, Ida Soto and husband, Lionel, and Benjy Hernandez and wife, Anabel, and daughter-in-law, Sandy Hernandez, all of San Angelo; 10 dearly loved grandchildren, Clarissa and Tim Hernandez, Araceli and Osiel Hernandez II, Bethany, Kelli, Joey and Ryan Hernandez, and Micah and Hannah Hernandez. He also is survived by four sisters, Maria Valdez, Francisca Lopez, Margarita Castillo and Emilia Guerra; one brother, Martin Hernandez; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sons, Misael Hernandez and Osiel Hernandez; and one grandson, Caleb Benjamin Hernandez. The family wishes to thank Dr. Carl Anderton, Dr. John Coughlin, Dr. Jesse Jurado and the 5 North nursing staff at Shannon Medical Center for their compassionate care. His children remember him as a loyal father and devoted husband to their mother, but most notably as a man after God's own heart. JOHN F. RIVES ODESSA - John Fred Rives was born Feb. 15, 1913, in Rotan to Thomas and Carrie Walker Rives. He passed away Dec. 5, 1999, in the New Horizon Nursing Center. Services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, in the Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Rex Clayton of Belmont Baptist officiating and Jimmie Braswell assisting. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. John moved to Robert Lee at an early age. He was a farmer and rancher for many years before moving to Odessa in 1952. He went to work for the ECISD in the maintenance department and retired after 27 years. His first wife, Callie Prine Rives, preceded him in death. He married Zela Ruth Buford in 1974. They enjoyed traveling, fishing and hunting together. John also enjoyed gardening. He was a member of Belmont Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Buford Rives of Odessa; his daughters, Floy Heath of Odessa and Johnnie Lou Caston of Fort Stockton; his brother, Tom Rives of Robert Lee; sister, Daisy Trimble of Corsicana; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. He also is survived by his wife's children, Katie Sue Vickrey and her husband, Roland, Patsy Beck and her husband, Charlie, Rick Buford and his wife, Loretta, and David Buford; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. LUCIA `CHALIA' GARZA Lucia ``Chalia'' Garza, 56, of San Angelo died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, in a local hospital. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Terry Brenon officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Sammy Garza, Pete Lara, Tony Caballero, Chris Lara, Gilbert Duran and David Samaniego. Mrs. Garza was born March 4, 1943, in San Angelo. She was a homemaker and was employed by Angelo State University. Survivors include her husband, Ignacio Garza Sr., two daughters, Dora Cabral and her husband, Will, and Terry Garza, all of San Angelo; a son, Ignacio Garza Jr. of Colorado City; four sisters, Dolores Caballero of Garland and Maria Lara, Eva Chavez and Margie Lara, all of San Angelo; a brother, Pete Lara and her mother, Lupe Lara, both of San Angelo; and two grandchildren, Stacy Cabral and Jonathan Barajas, both of San Angelo. Rest in Peace, Dear Mother. MARION PARKER Marion Parker, 82, of Lake Charles, La., died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, in a Lake Charles hospital. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, in Fairmount Cemetery with Dr. Jerold McBride officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Mr. Parker was a native of Henderson, Texas, and a resident of Lake Charles, La. He was a member of the Baptist faith. He attended Stephen F. Austin and was a graduate of the University of Oklahoma. He went to work for Humble Oil Co. in 1940 and retired from Exxon in 1986. A U.S. Air Force veteran pilot of World War II, he lived in various parts of Texas and moved from Houston to Lake Charles in 1992. Mr. Parker was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Elizabeth Myers. Survivors include his wife, Molly Parker of Lake Charles; three stepsons, Michael G. Miller of Lake Charles, William A. Miller of Orange and Jack M. Miller of Kingwood; a sister, Bernice Kennedy of Houston; two nieces, Mrs. Ralph (Peggy) Ramer and Jessie Rowe, both of Houston; a nephew, Neil Myers of Houston; and numerous other nieces and nephews. SAM V. TRANTHAM Sam V. Trantham, 85, of San Angelo died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at his residence. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, in Robert Massie Riverside Chapel with Mr. Leroy Sedgwick, pastor of Ninth & Main Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will follow in Mertzon Cemetery in Mertzon. Arrangements are by Robert Massie Funeral Home. Sam was born Jan. 18, 1914, in McKinney to Lee and Addie Mae Trantham. Sam married Margie Hegwood on Feb. 2, 1943, in San Angelo. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-1946. Sam began his ranching career in Mertzon in 1948 and retired from Pool Well Service in 1978 in San Angelo. He was preceded in death by parents, Lee and Addie Epley Trantham; brother, Levi Trantham; and a sister, Mary Trantham Hensley. He is survived by his wife, Margie Trantham of San Angelo; two sons, Sammy R. Trantham and wife, Jan, of Austin and Larry Trantham and wife, Janie, of Dallas; a daughter, Pam McKinney and husband, Joe, of Wimberley; two brothers, Charlie Trantham of Water Valley and Carl Trantham of Carlsbad; two sisters, Gladys Simmons of Reddings, Calif., and Tommie Burgess of Washington; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Teagarden, Shea, Justin, Austin and Lauren Trantham, and Erin and Chase McKinney; and three great-grandchildren, Ashley, Emily and Tanner Teagarden. Hoelscher, 90, of Veribest died at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6, 1999. Ernest was born June 28, 1909, in Yoakum. He was a resident of Veribest for 11 years and he was formerly of Alice. He was a veteran of World War II and was a farmer and rancher. He married Miriam Miller July 29, 1978, in Corpus Christi and he was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Alice. Survivors include his wife, Miriam Hoelscher of Veribest; one son, Ernest Lee ``Sonny'' Hoelscher of Alice; one daughter, Lanell Wratten and her husband, Jim, of Corpus Christi; five grandchildren, Sean Hoelscher, Jason Hoelscher and wife, Tara, Joan Velez and husband, Eric, Dan Schultze and wife, Leah, and Dennis Schultze Jr.; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Franki and husband, Guido, of Alice; Miriam's son, Charles Miller, of Robert Lee; Miriam's sister, Joan Rowland of San Angelo; three sisters-in-law, Judy Hoelscher, Regina Hoelscher and Rose Amy Hoelscher, all of Alice. JERRY WAYNE CHAPMAN Jerry Wayne Chapman, 48, of Christoval died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, in a local hospital. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, in the Christoval Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Mr. Chapman was born July 27, 1951, in Big Spring. He was a carpenter. JOHNNY LIVERMAN JUNCTION - Johnny Liverman, 45, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, in a Kerrville hospital. He was born March 29, 1954, in Fredericksburg, the son of John and Marjorie Liverman. A 1952 graduate of Junction High School, he attended Tarleton State University in Stephenville. He owned and managed Liverman's Grocery in Junction for many years and opened a new business, Johnny's Exxon and Subway in Junction shortly before his death. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Johnny was very active sponsoring many different organizations and willingly contributing to many needs in the community. Service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Morris Cook and the Rev. Fred Babb officiating. Burial will be in Junction Cemetery with arrangements by Aubrey Fife Funerals. Survivors include twin son and daughter, Cade and Casey Liverman of Libby, Mont.; his parents, John and Marjorie Liverman of Junction; a sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Keith Simpson of Rochelle; a brother and sister-in- law, Rodger Dell and Billie Carlile of Canyon Lake; a niece; and three nephews. BILL SEWARD Bill Seward, 66, passed from this life on Dec. 7, 1999, in Shannon Medical Center. Masonic graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Roger Roenfeldt officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Billy Dean Seward was born April 17, 1933, in San Angelo. He married Beverly Joyce Lieber Jan. 14, 1950. He was a painting and decorating contractor from 1964 until his health failed in 1993. He was ordained deacon of the First Presbyterian Church Jan. 5, 1967. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 1260, Past Patron of Concho Chapter 826 Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Scottish Rites Bodies of Austin and a member of Suez Shrine Temple. He served as Suez Shrine circus chairman in 1969 as well as performed in the Suez motor patrol at various events throughout Texas. His love for children prompted him to coach Gra-Y football and Little League baseball for several years even though he had no sons of his own. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife, Beverly, of almost 50 years; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Jim Schneider of Iraan and Marilyn and Rene Villarreal of San Antonio; three very special grandchildren, Randy Schneider, Suzanne Schneider and Crystal Villarreal; one brother, F.E. Seward; one uncle Edward Seward; and several nieces and nephews.
