He was born July 14, 1921, in Alamogordo, N.M., and had been a resident of Big Spring since 1951. Masonic graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Roger Roenfeldt officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Billy Dean Seward was born April 17, 1933, in San Angelo. He married Beverly Joyce Lieber Jan. 14, 1950. He was a painting and decorating contractor from 1964 until his health failed in 1993. He was ordained deacon of the First Presbyterian Church Jan. 5, 1967. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 1260, Past Patron of Concho Chapter 826 Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Scottish Rites Bodies of Austin and a member of Suez Shrine Temple. He served as Suez Shrine circus chairman in 1969 as well as performed in the Suez motor patrol at various events throughout Texas. His love for children prompted him to coach Gray-Y football and Little League baseball for several years even though he had no sons of his own. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife, Beverly, of almost 50 years; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Jim Schneider of Iraan and Marilyn and Rene Villarreal of San Antonio; three very special grandchildren, Randy Schneider, Suzanne Schneider and Crystal Villarreal; one brother, F.E. Seward; one uncle, Edward Seward; and several nieces and nephews. The family requests that memorials be sent to charity of choice. SAM V. TRANTHAM Sam V. Trantham, 85, of San Angelo died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at his residence. Funeral service was at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, in Robert Massie Riverside Chapel with Mr. Leroy Sedgwick, pastor of Ninth & Main Church of Christ, officiating. Burial followed in Mertzon Cemetery in Mertzon. Arrangements were by Robert Massie Funeral Home. Sam was born Jan. 18, 1914, in McKinney to Lee and Addie Mae Trantham. Sam married Margie Hegwood on Feb. 2, 1943, in San Angelo. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-1946. Sam began his ranching career in Mertzon in 1948 and retired from Pool Well Service in 1978 in San Angelo. He was preceded in death by parents, Lee and Addie Epley Trantham; brother, Levi Trantham; and a sister, Mary Trantham Hensley. He is survived by his wife, Margie Trantham of San Angelo; two sons, Sammy R. Trantham and wife, Jan, of Austin and Larry Trantham and wife, Janie, of Dallas; a daughter, Pam McKinney and husband, Joe, of Wimberley; three brothers, Maurice Trantham of San Angelo, Charlie Trantham of Water Valley and Carl Trantham of Carlsbad; two sisters, Gladys Simmons of Redding, Calif., and Tommie Burgess of Washington; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Teagarden, Shea, Justin, Austin and Lauren Trantham, and Erin and Chase McKinney; and three great-grandchildren, Ashley, Emily and Tanner Teagarden. Pallbearers will be Tim Teagarden, Blaine Smith, John Mayfield, Justin, Austin and Shea Trantham. Memorials may be made to Hospice of San Angelo. CAPT. PATRIC VANCE Capt. Patric Vance, a much decorated World War II pilot, died Dec. 7, 1999, on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, having been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal. He had been a bomber squadron commander, having won the coveted senior pilots wings. He flew 135 combat missions in the Pacific, being stationed at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, and flew without any leave until the war was over with Japan. Capt. Vance was born Jan. 29, 1916, in St. Paul, Minn. He went to college to study geology before going into the Army Air Force. He was orphaned at the age of 4 when his family died in a car accident. He married the former Thelma Clary Evans of San Angelo more than 40 years ago while he was working as an air traffic controller at the San Francisco Airport. He had lived in San Angelo the last 20 years of his life. He was preceded in death by his wife; and daughter, Marjorie Kiray. Survivors include a daughter, Angeline Horner; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, in Midway Cemetery in Coleman County. PAIGE BROOK KERRVILLE - Mr. Paige Brook, 79, of Ingram died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, in a San Antonio hospital. A resident of Ingram and Kerr County since 1988, he was born March 24, 1920, in Orange, N.J. He entered the Army during World War II, serving as warrant officer and leader of the 12th Armored Divison Band, which moved with the Allied divisions into Germany from the landings in Normandy. Mr. Brook had attended the Eastman School of Music, where he studied flute and piccolo with Joseph Mariano. In 1940 he became the first flute of the Buffalo Philharmonic. After his tour of duty in the Army he came to New York City where he free- lanced, performing with the Little Orchestra, among others. In 1952 he joined the flute section of the NY Philharmonic where he was to remain until his retirement to the Hill Country of Texas in 1988. He was a soloist with the Philharmonic many times, as well as a recitalist, chamber music player, thrice president of the New York Flute Club, teacher and flutist of the New York Philharmonic Woodwind Quintet. His recordings encompassed both classical and jazz repertory. He was very active in Kerrville and the surrounding area, playing in recitals and various churches and organizations. Paige loved life and participated fully in it. He loved to build things, including model airplanes and was an enthusiastic member of the Kerrville R/C Flyers. He loved to sail, spending many summers in Maine in past years. He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Kerrville and Colonial Kane Lodge 055, F&AM of New Jersey, District 11. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Alice deBerry Brook, whom he married Aug. 23, 1969, in New York City; two daughters, Nancy Shields of Columbia, Md., and Gail Bedell of Boone, N.C.; a son, Mitchell Brook of North Hampton, N.H.; two sisters, Muriel Bland of Greensboro, N.C., Janice Gulick of Tyson, Md.; and a sister-in-law, Anne deBerry of Sonora. Mary and Hugh were together for 73 years until Hugh died last year. The couple moved to Christoval in 1992 to live near their son's family. FATHER JAMES RICHARD AARON Retired Roman Catholic priest of the Diocese of San Angelo, James Richard Aaron, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, at the Catholic Care Center in Wichita, Kan. Father Aaron had been a priest for 47 years. Father Aaron was born June 23, 1914, to Robert and Mary Aaron in Wichita. He was one of 10 children. Father Aaron graduated from parochial elementary and high schools in Wichita and then attended Rockhurst College in Kansas. He graduated from Assumption Seminary in 1952. Father Aaron had several assignments in the Diocese of San Angelo. He was a parish priest at Sacred Heart Church in Abilene in 1960 and 1961; St. Ambrose at Wall from February 1962 until February 1965; then served as pastor of St. Mary Queen of Peace in Brownwood until May of 1979 when he became pastor of St. Thomas Church in Miles. He also served as a chaplain at St. John's Hospital in San Angelo from 1962 to 1965. Father Aaron retired from active parish work July 1, 1984. Father Aaron is survived by two brothers, Bill and Philip; and three sisters, Mary Adele Carlman, Rita Carney and Therese Schlotthauer. In addition, Father Aaron is survived by 28 nieces and nephews, 40 great-nieces and great-nephews; and four great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. He preceded her in death on May 28, 1993. Florence was a retired day care operator to many area children for more than 30 years. All the children she tended to called her ``Granny Vickers.'' Survivors include one son, L.D. He was a Southern Baptist foreign missionary from 1955 to 1987 in Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia. BLUFORD B. HESTIR JR. BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. - Bluford B. Hestir Jr. of Montreat died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999. Born July 19, 1919, in Carlisle, Ky. to the late Rev. Dr. Bluford B. and Nina Martin Hestir, he moved to Sterling City, Texas, where he attended elementary school. Moving to San Angelo he attended high school and San Angelo Junior College. Always an excellent student, Dr. Hestir also excelled in music, studying voice and piano. Receiving a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1940 in the field of journalism, he also played piccolo in the university band. He was editor of a trade journal and daily newspaper until World War II. He was active in student affairs at University Presbyterian Church. Dr. Hestir served five years in the Air Force and Army, attaining the rank of captain. He was stationed in San Diego, Salt Lake City and the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. He also was stationed in Alaska where he worked on winter testing on the Alaskan Highway. His final assignment was to the Pentagon. Dr. Hestir married Lucile Ratchford on Jan. 15, 1943. Upon discharge after the end of World War II, the Hestirs returned to the University of Texas at Austin where he earned his master of arts degree in American civilization in 1947. There he also taught undergraduate courses at the university and worked for the Interscholastic League Press Association. He also served as an editor of the San Angelo Standard-Times and night editor for the Austin American-Statesman newspapers. In 1953, Dr. Hestir became director of information for the Presbyterian Church, US, and moved to the church national offices in Atlanta, Ga. In 1962, he was appointed the first director of television, radio and audio visuals for the Presbyterian Church, US. He served 20 years in that position. In 1970, he was given an honorary doctor of letters degree by Presbyterian College of Clinton, S.C. Returning to Austin in 1973, Dr. Hestir was director of media services for the state of Texas. He retired in 1986 and moved to Montreat. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Carol Lynn Hestir Wegener (Mrs. Joseph P.) of Due West, S.C.; a son, Dr. Bluford B. Hestir III of Oakland, Calif.; and a daughter, Nina Lee Hestir Silver (Mrs. Michael K.), of Old Fort, N.C. A son, Robert Brenton Hestir, preceded him in death. There are six grandchildren, Laura Lee Wegener Paxton (Mrs. Jason T.) of Gilbert, S.C., David Andrew, James Joseph and Naomi Leah Wegener, all of Due West, S.C., and Travis Michael and Kaysie Michelle Silver, both of Old Fort, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren, Frances Lillian, Jonathan Charles and Heather Lorraine Paxton, all of Gilbert, S.C. A man of faith, Dr. Hestir was committed to a life of service to his Lord. He used his vocation and life to proclaim the gospel and spent many years writing for, producing for, and participating in church mission work, both globally and at home. He served as an elder in Morningside Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, University Presbyterian Church of Austin and Black Mountain Presbyterian Church. Dr. Hestir was a Bible student and served as Sunday school teacher for many years. He was involved in Presbyterian Men's work, Rotary and Kiwanis clubs. He also was active in library promotion, recently as Montreat College Friends of the Library president. He also was an officer in the Black Mountain Friends of the Library. Editor of a book on the Heritage Homes of Montreat, he was active in community life and recently taught courses on the Western Frontier and Indian Wars for the Montreat Academy for Lifetime Learning. A memorial service will be at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Dec.17. Officiating will be the Rev. Robert W. Ratchford, the Rev. Richard Shelor and the Rev. David Bierschwale. BONNIE HARKNESS WATSON Our beloved mother and ``Mam-Maw,'' Bonnie Ball Harkness Watson, died peacefully in her sleep Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, in Meadow Creek Nursing Home in San Angelo. She was born June 6, 1903, to Wade and Kate Anderson Ball. She married William Newell Harkness. Together they built a successful agricultural enterprise on the Waley Farm near Hooks, Texas, until Bill Harkness established a law practice in Texarkana in 1929. Bonnie earned her B.A. degree from East Texas State University in 1951, after which she taught elementary school at Beverly School. She and Bill traveled extensively with Airstream caravans after their retirement. After the death of her spouse, she married B.A. Watson in 1984 and they spent ten adventurous years continuing their travels and enjoying many pleasant game sessions with friends at Whispering Pines Retirement Center in Texarkana. ``Miss Bonnie'' will be fondly remembered for her sustaining sense of humor, her skill at weaving stories and tales, her hobbies of bridge and fishing and her deep and sincere friendships. Miss Bonnie relocated to San Angelo in 1996 to be near family when her health began to fail. She had frequent visitors from New Jersey, Nashville, Atlanta and her family in Texarkana. She is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Marsh of Red Bank, N.J., and her family Linda Kudile, Jim Marsh Jr., Carol Marsh Jones and Amy Marsh Rothberg; from her deceased son, Dr. William N. Harkness Jr. of Garland, are daughters Ann Harkness of Dallas and Jane LeBaron of California; her son, the Rev. David Harkness and wife, Betty, of Brentwood, Tenn., and their daughters, Amy Harkness-Hahn and Molly Harkness Cameron; daughter, Jane Smith and husband, Dr. O. Paul Smith Jr., of San Angelo and their children, Rebecca Ratliff, Margaret Wimpee and Dr. Stephen Smith, all of San Angelo and Bonnie Smith of Abilene. RICHARD HOEFS PECOS - Richard Ronald Hoefs passed away Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, in an Odessa hospital. ``Dick'' was born Oct. 7, 1928, to Rudolph and Bertha Hoefs. He was the youngest of five sons. Dick attended Peacock Military Academy and Trinity University in San Antonio. It was there that he met and married Helene Scrivener in 1949, with whom he had five children. Dick was engaged in ranching and farming for many years and also owned and operated a feed yard in Toyahvale. During this time he also was involved in local and civic activities. He was a Balmorhea city councilman, president of the Lions Club, president of the school board, Republican Party district chairman, served on the Pecos Hospital Board and was on the Boy Scout Council. He was very instrumental in helping establish the medical clinic in Balmorhea and served on the board as president. He was a member of the Cattlemen's Association and the Toyahvale Roping Association. He is survived by one brother, Alan Hoefs and his wife, Mildred, of Pecos; three sons, Mark Hoefs of Austin, Graham Hoefs and wife, Michelle, of Spring and Ferd Hoefs and wife, Cindy, of San Angelo; two daughters, Kathy Armstrong and husband, Andy, of Midland and Julianne Martin and husband, Bill, of Houston. He had six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16 at the Methodist Church in Balmorhea with the Rev. Bruce Abbott officiating. Burial will follow in Balmorhea Cemetery. Arrangements are by Pecos Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be John Moore, James Dyer, Jim Ed Miller, Don Wienacht, Bob Hyter and Freddy Moore. Honorary pallbearers will be Helen Humphries, Jean Duncan, Tom Clark and Fred Strode. Dick was an avid reader. He had read hundreds of books during his lifetime.
