Blumentritt, former longtime Iraan resident, found final peace and contentment on Jan. 3, 2000, at the age of 102. His life spanned three centuries. He was born Nov. 25, 1897, near Pflugerville to Fritz Blumentritt and Augusta Pfluger Blumentritt. He married Bonnie B. Ross in Stephenville on June 1, 1932. Bonnie preceded him in death in 1972. He is survived by two sons, James L. Blumentritt of Tiki Island and Joe E. Blumentritt of Midland; two granddaughters, Kelley Anne Harrell of Kerrville and Tracie Lynn Blumentritt of Laredo; one sister, Augusta Kriegel of San Angelo; two brothers, George L. Blumentritt of Odessa and Marvin V. Blumentritt of San Angelo; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He grew up on his parents' farm in Runnels County, near Rowena. During his preteen years he was driving mule teams, picking cotton and doing other duties on the family farm. In 1928 he moved to Iraan, where he resided for 66 years. He first worked for his brother, Fred, who owned a milk depot in Iraan. His long trucking career began when he purchased his brother's milk delivery truck. He then began hauling ice from the railroad depot in Rankin in Iraan. He later opened a freight business, which evolved into a general trucking operation. In 1934, he applied for and received a Texas Railroad Commission Grand Fathered Trucking Permit to ``Haul to and from all points in Texas.'' He was licensed and equipped to haul feed, wool, cattle, horses, sheep, goats, houses, household goods, oil, drilling water, brine water and drinking water, as well as oil field equipment. The U.S. government ordered the delivery of a new 1944 Chevrolet truck to his business because his oil field trucking operation was deemed war critical at that time. He operated the trucking business until his retirement in 1972. In 1983, he was honored as a Permian Basin Petroleum Pioneer. At the outbreak of World War II in 1941, city officials in Iraan asked him and his wife, Bonnie, if they would add milk cows to their small herd of cattle, so that the supply of milk for children in the area could be reliable. So, from 1941 until 1948 the family milked as many as nine cows, by hand, twice a day, and delivered the fresh milk in glass quart bottles to the school cafeteria and local stores. He continued to ranch in the Iraan area until 1994 and leased or grazed out his farm near Rowena until his death. His lifetime hobby was managing his herd of Hereford cattle. He experimentally crossbred Hereford cows with Black Angus bulls, purchased from Willie B. Wilson's ranch near Iraan, in an effort to produce a better cow. While living in Iraan, he served on the city council and was a member of the Iraan Volunteer Fire Department, the Iraan Chamber of Commerce and the Iraan First United Methodist Church. He also was a charter member of the Iraan Lions Club and in 1994 he was honored by the Iraan Lions Club for 60 years of continuous service to the club. In his later years he filled the Iraan Lions Club gum machines and collected the pennies from these machines for the Texas Lions Camp for Crippled Children. At the age of 94 he was cited for distinguished service by the Iraan Lions Club. During his long life he not only reared his two sons but also helped his brother and sister in the caring of their five younger siblings when their mother died from influenza and pneumonia in 1918. Two of his brothers graduated from Iraan High School while residing with him and his wife, Bonnie. Lewis Blumentritt will long be remembered by siblings, children and his friends for his kindness, honesty and quiet resolve. A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, in Rowena Protestant Cemetery in Rowena. Arrangements are by Ellis Funeral Home. The family requests memorials be directed to the Texas Lions Camp for Crippled Children, Box 247, Kerrville, TX 78029-0247, or a charity of one's choice. CONER S. DRUMMOND ABILENE - Coner S. He lived all over the USA during his childhood and returned to San Angelo at age 16. He graduated from Lake View High School in 1965. He was first diagnosed with kidney cancer in May of 1996 and was courageous and optimistic throughout his illness. When diagnosed his words were ``I may have cancer, but I will not let it ruin the rest of my life,'' and he did not. Darrell was born June 5, 1947, in San Angelo. He lived all over the USA during his childhood and returned to San Angelo at age 16. He graduated from Lake View High School in 1965. In July of 1966 he married his high school sweetheart, Ann Best, and they had two sons who were Darrell's pride and joy. Darrell was drafted into the U.S. Army in March of 1969 and spent a tour of duty in Vietnam advancing to the rank of sergeant. Upon his discharge he returned to San Angelo and entered Angelo State University and graduated in December of 1973. During his career Darrell had a variety of jobs, but in 1985 he found his calling. He became a science teacher at Lake View High School. To Darrell, teaching was not a job but a joy. He said often teaching is fun. He loved it when his present and former students would stop him in public places and tell him how they were doing; that would make his day. Darrell taught school until October of 1999 when he had to stop due to weakness caused by the cancer. Darrell's hobby in life was fishing. He was at peace when on the water. He said you had to believe in God after you saw a sunrise or a sunset on the water. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Wanda Durgin; his grandparents, Beatrice and Garland Watkins; and his mother-in-law, Helen Best. Survivors include his loving wife of 33 years, Ann Best Durgin of the home; two sons, Patrick Durgin of Grape Creek and Jeff Durgin and his wife, Lisa, of San Antonio; brother, David Durgin and his wife, Karla, of San Angelo; sister, Beth Durgin of Holiday Island, Ark.; a favorite aunt and uncle, Wilma and John Bramlett of Dublin, Texas; father-in-law, Carl Best and his wife, Ilene; brother-in-law, Wayne Best and his wife, Iris, of Marshall; and many other loving relatives and friends. A celebration of Darrell's life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with Sister Brigid Mollaghan officiating. His body will be cremated. The family requests that memorial gifts be made to Hospice of San Angelo, American Cancer Society and the Leukemia Society of America.
