She was born on Aug. 28, 1936, in Dallas. She graduated from Highland Park High School in 1953 and received her bachelor of arts degree in English from Baylor University in 1957. She married Elmer Lewis Stephens on Jan. 25, 1958. She was preceded in death by her parents, Judson C. Francis Sr. and Lillian Francis; and her brother, Judson C. Francis Jr. She is survived by her husband, Maj. Gen. Elmer Lewis Stephens (retired) and son, John M. Stephens II, both of Dallas; daughter, Elizabeth Stephens Wickham and son-in-law, Bradley C. Wickham, and granddaughter, Kate Wickham, all of Wichita, Kan.; brother, Louis D. Francis and his wife, June, of University Park; sister-in-law, Bettie Francis of Highland Park; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was born July 20, 1931, in Wirt, Okla. Marilyn married Pete Schultz Aug. 20, 1955, in Durant, Okla. His military career took them to Denison, Phoenix, Tokyo, Japan, San Antonio, Panama City, Fla., and Oklahoma City. She was a longtime resident of San Angelo and a member of First Baptist Church. Marilyn was a loving and devoted wife, following her husband's Air Force career, 17 years with Mitsubishi Aircraft, five years with the FAA, in addition a special mother, homemaker and from their union were three daughters. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, G.R. and Ellen Sizemore of Ringling, Okla. HERBERT H. `BOONIE' DEAN BALLINGER - Herbert H. ``Boonie'' Dean, 75, of Ballinger passed away at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, 2000, in the Ballinger Memorial Hospital. Family visitation was from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, at Rains-Seale Funeral Home. Service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, at the First Christian Church with Lynn Smith officiating. Military graveside service will follow in the Old Runnels Cemetery. Herbert was born on Oct. 14, 1924, in Ballinger to Ernest Herbert and Ida Jewell Gardner Dean. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II with the 15th Bomb Wing in the European Theatre as a gunner on a B24. He retired from Santa Fe Drilling in 1985, having spent 20 years in the Middle East. He was a superintendent during the drilling of several wells in Kuwait. He was called out of retirement in 1991 while fires were being put out after the Gulf War, to write up plans to get the wells back on line. He also supervised the setting of wellheads in Kuwait until fields were all back in production. Herbert married Judy Criswell in Wichita Falls on June 24, 1995. He was an avid animal lover and enjoyed gardening. He is survived by his wife, Judy; a son, Danny Dean and his wife, Sandee, of Austin; a daughter, Becky Holtman and her husband, Derek, of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Jera Smith and her husband, Rick, of Verden, Okla.; a stepson, John Cable of Duncan, Okla.; a brother, Bill Dean and his wife, Lola, of Ballinger; and a sister, Martha Palmer and her husband, James, of Ballinger. CARLYLE BENNETT Dr. Carlyle Dean Bennett, 92, of San Angelo died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, in a local hospital. Dr. Bennett was born June 16, 1907, in Vevay, Ind. He and Elma Bennett were married in 1931 and moved to Texas to complete their education in music. They graduated from Texas Wesleyan and from Southwestern Theological Seminary. They then moved to California and retired from the music department at Golden Gate Seminary. They spent many hours traveling all over the United States with their choirs. They were not blessed with children of their own, but spent their lives with other people's children. They moved to San Angelo in 1982 to live at Baptist Memorial Village. Elma preceded Carlyle in death on Oct. 30, 1999. They were members of Immanuel Baptist Church. He graduated from Fort Stockton High School in 1955 and Texas A&M University in 1965. He married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Caroline Graham, on March 20, 1956, in Fort Stockton. He served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959, serving in Europe and North Africa before entering Texas A&M University. He was a partner in the architectural firm Darrow-McSpedden-Sellars for many years after moving to San Angelo as an architect in training in 1965. He was also a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Texas Society of Architects. He was at one time active in the West Angelo Kiwanis Club, having served as president, and also bowled in the San Angelo Civic League for many years. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. Larry is survived by his wife, Nancy, and his three children, Kelly Karoline Mullins and her husband, Randy, and Oscar Neal McSpedden and his wife, Karel, all of San Angelo, and Russell Graham McSpedden and his wife, Linda, of El Paso. He is also survived by his precious grandchildren, Mallary Anne Mullins, Jonathan Ross Mullins and Hunter Nicole McSpedden. LILLY MAYBIN MESSICK GLODT Lilly ``Lil'' Maybin Messick Glodt of San Angelo died suddenly on Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, after recovering from surgery in San Angelo Community Medical Center. Lil was born in Marksville, La. She attended Louisiana State University and was working at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, La., when she met her lifelong love, Robert ``Bob'' Edward Glodt Sr. They were married Feb. 25, 1948, in Shreveport and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary nearly two years ago. Lil and Bob lived in Shreveport and then San Angelo before relocating to San Angelo in 1958 when they purchased the Walker Morgan Flower Shop. At that time, the business's name was changed to Glodt Flower Shop which they have owned and operated together for the past 42 years. They raised two children in San Angelo and were blessed by being able to watch their grandchildren grow and mature. Lil extremely loved her husband, family and friends. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed her calling in life, which was raising her family. She was always there offering her help and support when others were in need. Lil often was first to give assistance and was a sincere, reliable and dependable friend at all times. She was equally devoted to her faith which she exemplified in her daily life. Her thoughtfulness and unselfish giving of herself will be severely missed by all who knew her. Lil and Bob have been active in the community and were members of Holy Angels Catholic Church, the West Texas-New Mexico Florist Association and the Texas State Florist Association. Services are pending at McCoy Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Obituaries LILLY MAYBIN MESSICK GLODT Lilly ``Lil'' Maybin Messick Glodt of San Angelo died suddenly on Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, after recovering from surgery in San Angelo Community Medical Center. Lil was born in Marksville, La. She attended Louisiana State University and was working at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, La., when she met her lifelong love, Robert ``Bob'' Edward Glodt Sr. They were married Feb. 25, 1948, in Shreveport and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary nearly two years ago. Lil and Bob lived in Shreveport and then San Antonio before relocating to San Angelo in 1958 when they purchased the Walker Morgan Flower Shop. At that time, the business's name was changed to Glodt Flower Shop which they have owned and operated together for the past 42 years. They raised two children in San Angelo and were blessed by being able to watch their grandchildren grow and mature. Lil extremely loved her husband, family and friends. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed her calling in life, which was raising her family. She was always there offering her help and support when others were in need. Lil often was first to give assistance and was a sincere, reliable and dependable friend at all times. She was equally devoted to her faith which she exemplified in her daily life. Her thoughtfulness and unselfish giving of herself will be severely missed by all who knew her. Lil and Bob have been active in the community and were members of Holy Angels Catholic Church, the West Texas-New Mexico Florist Association and the Texas State Florist Association. Survivors include her husband, Robert ``Bob'' Edward Glodt Sr.; a son, Robert ``Robbie'' E. Glodt Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Plainview; a daughter, Stacy G. Pool and her husband, John, of Midland; and four grandchildren, Tyler and Travis Glodt, Taylor West and Morgan Pool. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. JAMES LOYCE ADAMS James Loyce Adams of San Angelo died on Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in Shannon Medical Center. He was the son of Will and Della Adams. His family moved to Snyder in 1929 and he worked in various capacities on ranches. In 1931 he bought his first truck and began his trucking career by hauling apples from New Mexico to Snyder. He hauled cattle from Scurry County to Fort Worth, where the only hard surface road was a brick road from Weatherford to Mineral Wells. In 1968 he began stock farming on the Polar Road and enjoyed that until he moved to Baptist Memorials Retirement Center in San Angelo in 1983. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Loyce enjoyed rodeos and was the last survivor of the original rodeo directors of Scurry County. In 1942 Loyce volunteered for military service and served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Kate Adams of San Angelo; their daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Kent Gardner; a granddaughter and her husband, Kathy and Laddie Lewis; a grandson and his wife, Jim and Joy Keath; and two great-granddaughters, Regent Ham and Jade Keath. He also is survived by three nephews and two nieces who were dear to him. Loyce was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. JOHN LARRY McSPEDDEN John Larry McSpedden of San Angelo died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at his residence after a valiant fight with cancer. He graduated from Fort Stockton High School in 1955 and Texas A&M University in 1965. He married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Caroline Graham, on March 20, 1956, in Fort Stockton. He served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959, serving in Europe and North Africa before entering Texas A&M University. He was a partner in the architectural firm Darrow-McSpedden-Sellars for many years after moving to San Angelo as an architect in training in 1965. He was also a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Texas Society of Architects. He was at one time active in the West Angelo Kiwanis Club, having served as president, and also bowled in the San Angelo Civic League for many years. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. Larry is survived by his wife, Nancy, and his three children, Kelly Karoline Mullins and her husband, Randy, and Oscar Neal McSpedden and his wife, Karel, all of San Angelo, and Russell Graham McSpedden and his wife, Linda, of El Paso. He also is survived by his precious grandchildren, Mallary Anne Mullins, Jonathan Ross Mullins and Hunter Nicole McSpedden. DORRANCE Ray E. Dorrance, former mayor of San Angelo, died Jan. 10, 2000. Born in Wichita Falls, Texas, on Nov. 24, 1923, he attended San Angelo Junior College, where he served as president of the Student Council. Following service in the U.S. Navy, he attended the University of Texas at Austin, majoring in real estate and business. A graduate of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers at the University of St. Louis in 1949, he worked with his family business, G.I. Dorrance & Son and Dorrance & Associates from 1947 to 1962. For 34 years of his career, he was a real estate broker and developer involved with residential and commercial real estate. He was an agent and investment counselor for 34 years for Farm & Home Savings Association. Ray was an appraiser of ranch, farmland and commercial properties. He actively celebrated life in his community by serving as a director of more than 14 civic boards and bureaus. He served as president of Lake Nasworthy board, 12 years; Airport Advisory Board, three years; Twin Mountain District of the Boy Scouts of America, three years; San Angelo Board of Realtors, six years; and Multiple Listing Service of San Angelo, five years. Ray served as city councilman for two terms from 1964 and as mayor of San Angelo until 1970. He semi-retired and operated the -D Stud Farm in 1971. Moving to Tyler in 1982, he was self-employed as a real estate counselor. Ray's last enterprise was with his confidant and compadre, Troy Allen. Hunting, fishing, oil painting and cooking were at the top of a long list of activities he enjoyed. He moved onto new endeavors at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2000. He was preceded in death by his parents, Crista and G.I. Dorrance; and his son, Derrell Dorrance. He is survived by brother, Carl Dorrance; former wife, Doris Dorrance McDurmitt; daughter, Eddie Jean McKinsey; son, Larry Dorrance; daughter-in-law, Betsy Dorrance Clardy; and grandchildren, Amy McKinsey and Thomas Wade Dorrance Clardy. Linda was active in volunteer work with the Dallas Symphony, The Dallas Museum of Art and The Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra. LILA BETH BROWN KERRVILLE - Lila Beth Brown, 69, of Junction died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at her residence after a courageous battle with cancer. Besides being a homemaker, Mary worked in the office of the Mertzon school, did light housecleaning, babysat, helped cook for the Lions Club and anything else anyone asked her to do. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church and loved her ``Friendship'' class. Mary's grandchildren all called her ``Grandmary'' and so did almost everyone else, children and adults alike. She loved her family and friends and was loved by them. She was preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Jenny Webb of Berryville, Ark., and also her husband, Curtis, in 1970. She is survived by her only sister, Glen Chapman of Robert Lee; her daughter, Virginia Scott of Marble Falls; son, Eddie Curtis and wife, Johnita, of Mertzon; two granddaughters, Karen Bradbury and Lynell Harned, both of Marble Falls; four grandsons, Jodie Martin of Fort Stockton, Scott Martin of Flagstaff, Ariz., Clint Martin of Fort Worth and Kelly Dorsey of Austin; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a loving wife and mother who instilled good principles and values in her children. She was a member of Primera Iglesia Bautista until she was no longer able to attend because of her health. Her husband, Atilano, preceded her in death in 1985. Two of their sons also preceded her, Albert Terrazas and Rosendo Terrazas, and a daughter, Edna. H.O. was born on Nov. 4, 1916, in Live Oak community in Concho County to William Milton and Katy Lillian Lloyd Aylor, the eighth of 12 children. He attended school in Miles. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1935 which later became the U.S. Air Force. He served two years in the Philippines during World War II. He was medically discharged from the Air Force in 1958 and became the engineer officer at Goodfellow Air Force Base until his retirement in 1972. He married Cleo Marie Turner on July 20, 1942. H.O. had a special love for the outdoors and enjoyed gardening, pecan trees and fishing until his health failed. He was an avid sports fan and supporter of the Dallas Cowboys. He was the charter member and deacon at Belmore Baptist Church and at the time of his death he was a member and deacon at Southland Baptist Church. H.O. was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Lloyd, Jim, Bill, John M., Fred and Winston; one sister, Ora Lee Tate; a son, Owen Kyle Aylor; and a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Marie Aylor. He is survived by his wife, Marie, three sons and their wives, Neal and Vivian Aylor, Kemper and Patricia Aylor and Don and Donna Aylor, and one daughter and her husband, Karen and Michael Wells, all of San Angelo; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dominick was born Aug. 18, 1929, in New York, N.Y., to Dominick Tabano Sr. and Lucy Tabano. He married Frances Nichols on Sept. 27, 1958, in New York. He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, retiring after 22 years of service. After his military service, he was a warehouse manager at the base exchange and was currently the manager at Stadium Lanes Bowling Center. He had been a resident of San Angelo for 30 years and was a member of the Catholic church. Dominick was an avid bowler. He bowled in five different leagues. He is survived by his wife, Frances Tabano of San Angelo; one daughter, Patricia Tabano and Larry Curb of San Angelo; one son, Anthony Vincent Tabano and his wife, Laurie, of California; two brothers, Vincent Anthony Tabano of River Edge, N.J., and George Berghorn of Manhattan, N.Y.; and five grandchildren, Patrick Tabano, Brittany Tabano, Machelle Banks, Michael Tabano and Billy Curb. The family will be receiving visitation at 1011 N. Jefferson St. MARY WEBB MARTIN Mary Webb Martin, 87, of Mertzon died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Northwood Health Care in Marble Falls. Mary was born March 3, 1912, in Tom Green County, growing up in the Red Creek and Knickerbocker area. After graduating from San Angelo High School in 1931, she married Curtis Morgan Martin the same year. They lived in Fort Stockton until both of their children were born, then moved their family to Mertzon in 1939. Besides being a homemaker, Mary worked in the office of the Mertzon School, did light housecleaning, babysat, helped cook for the Lions Club and anything else anyone asked her to do. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church and loved her ``Friendship'' Class. Mary's grandchildren all called her ``Grandmary'' and so did almost everyone else, children and adults alike. She loved her family and friends and was loved by them. She was preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Jenny Webb of Berryville, Ark., and also her husband, Curtis in 1970. She is survived by a her only sister, Glen Chapman of Robert Lee; her daughter, Virginia Scott of Marble Falls; son, Eddie Curtis and wife, Johnita, of Mertzon; two granddaughters, Karen Bradbury and Lynell Harned, both of Marble Falls; four grandsons, Jodie Martin of Fort Stockton, Scott Martin of Flagstaff, Ariz., Clint Martin of Fort Worth and Kelly Dorsey of Austin; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Howard O'Neal Aylor Sr., went to be with the Lord on Jan. 11, 2000, at Baptist Memorials Center. Service will be at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at Southland Baptist Church with Dr. J. H.O. was born on Nov. 4, 1916, in Live Oak community in Concho County to William Milton and Katy Lillian Lloyd Aylor, the eighth of 12 children. He attended school in Miles. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1935 which later became the U.S. Air Force. He served two years in the Philippines during World War II. He was medically discharged from the Air Force in 1958 and became the engineer officer at Goodfellow Air Force Base until his retirement in 1972. He married Cleo Marie Turner on July 20, 1942. H.O. had a special love for the outdoors and enjoyed gardening, pecan trees and fishing until his health failed. He was an avid sports fan and supporter of the Dallas Cowboys. He was a charter member and deacon at Belmore Baptist Church and at the time of his death he was a member and deacon at Southland Baptist Church. H.O. was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Lloyd, Jim, Bill, John M., Fred and Winston; one sister, Ora Lee Tate; a son, Owen Kyle Aylor; and a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Marie Aylor. He is survived by his wife, Marie, three sons and their wives, Neal and Vivian Aylor, Kemper and Patricia Aylor and Don and Donna Aylor, and one daughter and her husband, Karen and Michael Wells, all of San Angelo; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He also is survived by four sisters, Viola Crook of Wall, Helen Neal of Temple, Leta Mae Williams of Bryan and Betha Hicks of San Angelo. WANETTA `NITA' PEARL BOX EDEN - Wanetta ``Nita'' Box, 69, passed away early Wednesday morning, Jan. 12, 2000, in Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo. Mrs. Box was born in Burnet County on Sept. 28, 1930, to Faye and Ruby Hopkins. Mrs. Box was married in 1947 to Alvin Box. Moving from Eden in 1988, Wanetta had spent the last 12 years living in Mereta. She was a member of the Baptist Church and a respected member of her community. Mrs. Nita Box was a homemaker. Survivors include her son, Michael Box and his wife, Polly, of Mereta; one daughter, Debbie Plevan and her husband, Van; one brother, Junior Hopkins of Arizona; and three sisters, Dorothy Hyman and Mryl Cox, both of Andice, and Linda Cowan of Briggs. Other survivors include four grandsons, Eron Plevan, son of Van and Debbie Plevan, and Shawn, Chad and Craig Box, the children of Michael and Polly Box. She was born to Marion and Susan Pritchard in Robert Lee on Nov. 8, 1905. She was a lifelong resident of Robert Lee. She was a homemaker and a member of Southside Church of Christ. Naomi was a nurse at Shannon Hospital for many years working with children and was an avid bridge player. Mrs. Dorris is survived by her husband, Edwin C. Dorris of San Angelo; was the devoted mother of four children; three sons, Richard E. Dorris and wife, Suzanne, of San Angelo, and Robert C. Dorris DDS and wife, Mary, and Dave D. Dorris and wife, Beckie, all of Houston; one daughter, Patricia D. Richey of Dallas; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Ramirez Sr., 82, of San Angelo died at 1:10 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at his residence. David was born Dec. 11, 1917, in Lockhart. ENOCH SEVIER DUNCAN Enoch Sevier Duncan, 79, born Nov. 17, 1920, in Johnson City, Tenn., died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in Tucson, Ariz., where he had resided for the past four months. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys and Enoch Elmer Duncan. He is survived by his bride of 55 years, the former Dorothy Lee Brasher of San Angelo; special cousins, Wendell and Jo Clark of Kingsport, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews including Richard and Judy Brasher of Tucson, Jesale Moore and James and Velma Brasher, all of San Angelo, Sherry Gora of San Diego, Jody and Kathy Brasher of Robert Lee, Jack and Jean Lee of Odessa and John Brasher of Dallas. Enoch was a veteran of World War II having served with honor as a fighter pilot in the European, African and Middle Eastern Campaigns. He was awarded an air medal with three oak clusters and a combat campaign medal with two bronze stars. He continued his service to his country by completing a distinguished career of 28 years as a foreign service officer in American embassies throughout the Middle East and Africa. Service for Enoch S.
