She was a homemaker. Johnie Lanier COLEMAN - Johnie Lee Lindeman Lanier, 83, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in a local hospital. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Coleman Cemetery Pavilion. She was a homemaker and a member of Sunset Ridge Church of Christ. Lillian Renshaw PECOS - Lillian Ester Renshaw, 81, of Pecos died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in a Monahans nursing center. An Army veteran of World War II, she was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church, Eastern Star, Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include a son, Butch Renshaw of Pecos; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Beulah Hall STANTON - Beulah Mae Hall, 97, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in a local nursing home. Houston of Odessa; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Carmen Mendias MARFA - Carmen Ortega Mendias, 88, of Marfa died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in an Alpine hospital. Services are pending at Grimes Funeral Chapels. _________________________________________________________________ Obituaries ETHEL WATTERS MITCHELL Ethel Watters Mitchell passed away Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in San Angelo. Funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Andrews officiating. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Sanderson. Ethel was born Sept. 8, 1903, near Sonora, Sutton County. She was the eldest child of W.L. Watters and Jenny Pricilla Sellman Watters. She attended public schools in Ozona and attended Howard Payne College in Brownwood. On Dec. 7, 1922, Ethel married William C. Mitchell in Ozona, Crockett County. They ranched in Crockett County until 1928 when they moved to a Pecos County ranch. Later they moved to the Trent ranch, Pecos County, and ranched there until their retirement in January 1961. Ethel and Bill lived in Sanderson for two years before moving to San Angelo, where they lived the rest of their lives. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill Mitchell in 1984; a grandson, William Mitchell Kerr in 1957; a brother, Sellman Watters; and a sister, Bernice Watters Friend of Fort Davis. Ethel was a devoted Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker and loyal friend. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of San Angelo, the Elizabeth Sunday School Class, the John Brick Chapter of Colonial Dames, Pocahontas Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Republic of Texas and a member of a Literary Review Club. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Flo Mitchell of Fort Stockton and one daughter and son-in-law, Rosella and Edward Kerr of San Angelo. Grandchildren are Jamie and Judy Mitchell of Midland, SuSu and Wayne Dyess of Fort Stockton, Rosalie Kerr Johnson of Houston, Hudson and Maggie Kerr of Sanderson, Jeanette and Wayne Zachary of El Paso, Tim and Beth Kerr of San Angelo and Tom and Amy Kerr of San Angelo. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Cliff (Rachel) Dickerson of Renton, Wash.; one brother, Robert Watters of Kent, Wash.; and four nieces, Mrs. Ray (Mary) Fitzgerald of San Angelo, Mrs. Joe McWhorter of Auburn, Wash., Mrs. Delton (Ann) Holcomb of Molalla, Ore., and Mrs. Rebecca Weldon of Seattle, Wash. VELISA LANEE CORTESE Velisa Lanee Cortese, 27, of San Angelo died at 8:05 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in a local hospital. She was born Jan. 3, 1973, in McCulloch County. She was employed by Blue Cross-Blue Shield and was a member of the Baptist church. Survivors include her husband, Phil Cortese of San Angelo; her parents, Jo Anna McCutchen of Mertzon and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Cook of Richland Springs; and three brothers, Joe Cook and wife, Laura, of Comanche, Jimmy Anderson and wife, Nela, of Gilmer, and Mike McCutchen and wife, Jerri, of Sterling City. Graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. in Wallace Creek Cemetery near San Saba, Texas. BEDFORD B. HOLCOMB Bedford B. Holcomb, 89, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Baker-Brame Nursing Center. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with the Rev. John Loving officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Bedford was born Nov. 14, 1910, in Deming, New Mexico Territory, to Haynie and Ann Keith Barksdale. In 1919 they moved to Breckenridge, Texas, where Bedford grew up and attended school. In 1937 she married Terry Holcomb, who preceded her in death in 1978. Bedford moved to San Angelo from Odessa in 1979. She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Altar Guild and St. Mary's Guild. She joined the Newtimers Club when she moved here and was an active member until her death. For 13 years she was a member of Angelo Community Auxiliary. She loved to play bridge and was a member of several bridge groups. She is survived by two sons, Phillip, and daughter-in-law, Kathleen, of San Angelo, Michael, and daughter-in-law, Deborah, of New Hope, Pa.; one granddaughter, Genevieve, and husband, Dan Cummings, of San Francisco; her aunt, Mrs. Nadine Smith of Las Vegas; and special friends, Bob and Jeanne Ellen Keith of Odessa. Special thanks to nurses and staff of Shannon Medical Center, 6 South, Baker Brame, Shelly Hunt and Dr. Vayden Stanley of Vista Care Family Hospice.
