She lived an exemplary life of faith and Christian love and will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her. Mary was born Sept. 23, 1919, in Beaumont, Texas, to Norwegian immigrant Sigurd Rudolph Wamstad and his wife, Martha Fredricka Swenson, a Swedish immigrant. Following Mary's graduation from Beaumont High School, she worked for the Enterprise and Journal newspaper and later for Sun Oil Co. She married Dorman L. Chapman, originally of Coleman County on Dec. 24, 1942. In 1948, they moved from Beaumont to San Angelo where they reared four daughters, one of whom, Martha, died at age 3 as a result of a congenital heart defect. In 1950, the Chapmans established Ace Builders Co. Inc., which proudly served San Angelo and the surrounding communities for more than 40 years. After Dorman passed away in 1993, Mary successfully managed the family enterprises until her death. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church, as well as the San Angelo Country Club, where she played golf and bridge for many years. Mary was an accomplished knitter, seamstress and homemaker. A devoted wife and mother, she channeled her artistic talents into creating a beautiful, loving home which was generously opened to a wide circle of family and friends. In her later years, she learned to use a computer and enjoyed e-mailing her daughters and friends. Coming from a small family, she enthusiastically adopted her husband's extended West Texas family as her own. She also faithfully corresponded with her beloved Norwegian cousin, Inger Ostgaard, and Swedish cousin, Margit Fridell. In 1973, on a trip to Europe with her youngest daughter, Mary finally met them in person. In 1980, Inger brought her Norwegian family to Texas for a visit. These exchange visits were some of Mary's fondest memories. Mary was predeceased by her beloved brother, Robert Wamstad, a distinguished World War II veteran, and his son, Frank, both of Beaumont. She is survived by her daughters, Lee Bergen and husband, Pat Foy, of Gilbert, Ariz., Jan Chapman and beloved grandson, Spencer Chapman Nottingham of Denver, and Fran Chapman and husband, Brian Price of Austin; very dear in-laws, Hazel Gaines Chapman of Abilene, T.J. and Betty Chapman of Austin, Corky and Jo Dean Chapman of Coleman and Juanita Wamstad of Beaumont; cousins, Anita Melin of Tahoe City, Calif., and Billy Jean Hohmann of Georgetown; many nieces and nephews; and many cherished friends, including Alma Combs, Esther Albert, Larry Abbott, Nell Kelley, Sue Belle Balch, Mary Belle Hay, Ida Fay Coward, Louise Lewis, Carol Shaefer, Anna Satterwhite, Sarah Chavarria and Edith Myers, all of San Angelo, and Loreta Tardy, Val Wingate and Margaret Bean, all of Beaumont, Louann and Alton Pyburn of Sweetwater, and others too numerous to name. I took His hand when I heard Him call. I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, to laugh, to love, to work, to play. Tasks left undone must stay that way. If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered joys Of friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss - Oh yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life's been full, I've favored much, good friends, good times, a loved one's touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your hearts and peace to thee God wanted me now, He set me free. RITA E. GALAN Rita E.
