Mary was born Sept. 23, 1919, in Beaumont, Texas, to Norwegian immigrant Sigurd Rudolph Wamstad and his wife, Martha Fredricka Swenson, a Swedish immigrant. Following Mary's graduation from Beaumont High School, she worked for the Enterprise and Journal newspaper and later for Sun Oil Co. She married Dorman L. Chapman, originally of Coleman County on Dec. 24, 1942. In 1948, they moved from Beaumont to San Angelo where they reared four daughters, one of whom, Martha, died at age 3 as a result of a congenital heart defect. In 1950, the Chapmans established Ace Builders Co. Inc., which proudly served San Angelo and the surrounding communities for more than 40 years. A devoted wife and mother, she channeled her artistic talents into creating a beautiful, loving home which was generously opened to a wide circle of family and friends.
