GONZALES Norberto Juarez Gonzales, 90, of San Angelo died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, in an area hospital. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Joe Vasquez of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are by Robert Massie Funeral Home. He was born Aug. 18, 1909, in Estacion De Catorce, a railroad depot in the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi, as Norberto Juarez. His heritage was of the ``Lagunero Tribe.'' He was born into the revolutionary days, life threatening days. His daddy died mysteriously in Norberto's infancy. His child-mother attempted to survive during the ``Revolution.'' Norberto was mercifully ``kid-nabbed'' by his uncle, Don Benito Gonzales, who carried him on his back through the Chihuahuan Desert for over a thousand miles, hiding from opposing warring factions who executed peasants for target practice. They arrived in the ``valley'' of Texas when it was a verdant forest. He soon carried a .38 special to defend himself from the natives who had displaced the ``natives.'' He married late because at the age of 12 he had to provide for his uncle who took ill and never recovered. The unwavering focus in his life was simply to give his future family a better life with God's help. He professed, as we later understood, that God sent our now departed mother to him. He believed in God and education as his family's salvation from his plight. He had the unmitigated gall to educate even his daughters and insisted they obtain college degrees. All this when in his world even first-born sons were not tendered the luxury of an education. To Don Norberto it was a necessity. He worked his children hard, up to 14 hours a day in the fields, and yet in his personal schedule this was just a warm-up. With his smarts and determination he could have had a good career, yet he insisted on working side by side with the children he said God gave him and teaching them how to struggle and succeed. During the Great Texas Drought, he and his family became migrant workers. His children attended school full-time from January through March, part-time April through May and were absent September through December. He assured his children they could excel in school and they believed his sincerity. He said somebody else always had it worse, and anyway, tomorrow was going to be better. He arrived on the banks of the Atascosa River on foot, and later traveled the ``World.'' He never owned land, yet he was of the land. He never pursued possessions, yet he professed God gave him everything. He believed life should be shared and did so by example. He was faithful and he lived his ``faith.'' ``Nuestro Padre'' is survived by five sons, Tiburcio C. Gonzales of Hereford, Juan C. Gonzales and Mario C. Gonzales, both of Del Valle, and Norberto C. Gonzales and Javier C. Gonzales, both of San Angelo; seven daughters, Dionisia G. Barina of Temple, Guadalupe G. Hartshorn of Elko, Nev., Emilia G. King, Juanita C. Gonzales and Francisca G. Tamayo, all of Austin, and Maria C. Gonzales and Rosalia C. Gonzales, both of San Angelo; 28 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. EDITH LEAR PETTIT Edith L.
