On quiet hinges it gives at dusk, When the thrushes call. Along the lintel are green leaves, Beyond, the light lies still; Very weary and willing feet Go over that sill. There is nothing to trouble any heart, Nothing to hurt at all. Death is only an old door In a garden wall. - Nancy Byrd Turner BILLY LAURENCE GREEN Billy Laurence Green, a retired major (USAF), went to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, in Texas from complications of an inherited blood disease. His son, Timothy Laurence Green, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Gwen, daughters, Rebecca J. Castiglione and Belinda L. Ekstrum, grandchildren, Austin M. and Sarah J. Castiglione, Amanda L. and Ryan D. Garcia and Jessica E. Eskstrum, all of Sacramento. In addition, he is survived by brothers, David Laurence Green and George Beauchamp, and loving mother, Delphine Coley of Texas. The couple, married for 45 years, traveled extensively during his tours of duty with the military. He served as pilot on various aircraft, the first being the B28, the last, the A26. Major Green was a consummate patriot. Even as a child, he plotted World War II on a large wall map and always wanted to attend a military academy. During his 18 months of duty in Southeast Asia, he flew ``sorties'' equal to a full two years of duty. He also was chosen for Special Forces. While teaching South Vietnamese pilots to fly, he often fought hand-to-hand with the Viet Cong, once having to kill without using any weapons other than his personal fighting skills. Billy stood firm in his belief that all Americans should take whatever measure was required to keep our country strong and free. Major Green was highly intellectual, earning both an MPA and an MBA. His photographic memory was an asset; he could talk to anyone about any topic. Also, he excelled in political science and never lost his quest for knowledge. ``Wisdom is a tree of life to those who eat her fruit; happy is the man who keeps on eating it.'' Proverbs 3:18. Bill, you were the love of my life and always will be, a soft wind beneath my wings. I will miss you until we meet again. - My love, Gwen. ADELA C. ORNELAS Adela C.
