Willie was born in Childress, Texas, on April 16, 1920, to Edgar Stafford and Laura Hendon. His dad was a sharecropper who moved out west from South Carolina. He was the eldest of three boys and a sister. He had a half brother from Mom and half sisters from Dad. His mother moved the family to San Angelo when he was 8 years old. On July 28, 1940, he eloped with Lauretta Skiles, a blushing bride of 16. They had two daughters, Peggy and six years later, Diana. Willie served as an enlisted serviceman in the infantry during the occupation of Germany during World War II. Then he was recalled to serve as an airplane mechanic in Michigan during the Korean War. In 1950 he began to train under Vernon Baker in sign painting. He then worked with John Miller/Miller Advertising, J.P. Williamson/San-Tex Advertising, Larry Link/Newman Advertising and then finally on his partnership business, AD-ART with Ms. Flippin. Willie was known wherever he went since he mostly worked outdoors painting signs. People would stop to admire his work and always be greeted by a big friendly smile. He couldn't go anywhere in San Angelo that someone didn't know him. His love of his work was such a positive influence it flowed to those around him. His beloved wife, Lauretta died in 1982, shortly before their 42nd wedding anniversary and still is missed sorely. Then came the best friend of his life, a black lab puppy named ``Sam.'' The last nine years were filled with a mutual love and understanding to these constant companions. Surviving immediate members of the family are daughter, Peggy Lambert and husband, Ronald, of San Angelo and their daughters, Donna Danel of Fenton, Mo., Judy Jamison R.N. of Radcliff, Ky., and sons, Daniel Lambert of San Angelo and Christopher Lambert of Kansas City, Mo.; the younger daughter, Diana Wood and husband, Ricky, of San Angelo and her two daughters, Capt. Vickie Brown (USAF) of Virginia and Amanda Milhauser of San Angelo. There are a total of 10 great- grandchildren. Also surviving are in-laws in the Stafford, Skiles, Paige, Weston and Moore families. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 18, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Military graveside rites will follow in Miles Cemetery in Miles. Pallbearers will be Rick Wood, Ron Lambert, Dan Lambert, Ronnie Copeland, Gary Flippin and Rodney Moore. The family requests memorials be made to VistaCare Family Hospice. Willie Stafford had an extraordinary talent. An artist who could arrange blobs of paint on a high-rising billboard that would make your mouth water for a bite of Kentucky Fried Chicken. It looked that real, or an ad for a beer that looked so cold and wet, you felt the need to quench a thirst. His sign painting is still evident in parts of the Concho Valley. In the early '60s, he was recognized with several awards covering the greater Southwest area in a publication, ``Signs of the Times.'' There were also several awards presented from the Local Outdoors Advertising Association. He passed on this brilliant work to a very talented ASU student, Sharon Flippin. They worked as a team for years, creating art for all to enjoy through their work of outdoor advertising. He felt blessed to have a job that he really enjoyed ... just going to work.
